FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL iTHE STORY BRIEFLY TOLD. Unusual. Ease in the Money Market. THE FOREIGN MARKET STEADY. Firmness in Railroad Bonds and Government Securities. GOLD STRONGER. 1. STREET, } WEDNESDAY, Tae ‘21-6 P.M. An abundance of money in the banks, their eagerness to loan their surplus on the street at rates lower than have been known for years, a senaitiveness that is prophetic, an inferential con- feggion that our fiduciary institutions are over- loaded with remittances from the country seeking employment in vain; that neither Wall street, with all of its so-called speculation, nor legitimate com- merce, with all of it wants, can absorb the mill- ions which are lying idle; that this idle money represents @ lack of use, and bespeaks some- thing of the. lethargy of trade—these are the thoughts that are gradually permeating and educating the public mind. We are living on the edge of a volcano, and Congress {a building the fire for a fresh eruption. Every dollar added to our present currency ts fucy“T¥pension means disaster. We may escape fora little while, buia few months will witness on a larger scale a repeti- tion of the misfortunes trom which we are now emerging. The subject is too broad to be treated ina half dozen lines, but it will bear the sober, ‘Serious consideration o1 the people. THK MONEY MARKET, Money closed easy on call at 6 per cent as the general rate and 3 and 4 per cent as the excep- tional rates. Loans were made to-day on five and six months’ first class paper as low as 534 per cent—a fact which indicates unusual ease in the market. Foreign exchange closed quiet at $4 8234 @ $4 83 for prime bankers’ sixty-day steriing, $4 86 a $4 8634 for demand and $4 79a $4 80 for com- merotal bills, The amount of expenditure from tne reserve yet to be made is about $17,000,000, put there ia & proposition before Congress to limit the legal tender circulation to $400,000,000. This will make, if true, a lively time in fnancial circles, THE GOLD MARKET. Gold to-day exhibited more than usual strength, opening at 111% and advancing to 111%. The lato eales, however, were made at 111%. The rates paid for carrying were 5, 6, 54 and 4 per cent. THE GOLD EXCHANGE BANK, ‘The day’s business at the Gold Exchange Bank THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. The following were the balances in the Treasury at the close of business to-day:—Ourrency, $3,280,232; special deposit of legal tenders for the Fedemption of certificates of deposit, $43,610,000 ; coin (including qoin certificates, ‘ $45,763,000) > $87,839,132; outstanding legal tenders, $382,306,237. The custom receipts to-day were $323,000. The in- ternal revenue receipts were $305,538, The Assist- sunt Treasurer paid ont to-day $285,000 on account of interest and $5,000 in redemption of five-twenty ‘Ponds, The opinion has gone abroad that the Committee of Ways afl Means will report a bill fixing the issue of legal tenders at $400,000,000—a eum which fully includes the $44,000,000 reserve. Whatever nffy be argued to the contrary this step is a consession of weakness by the government, GOVERNMENT BONDS. Cotton Dall—Fatures a Shade Lower— Flour Dull— Wheat Heavy —Corn Steady—Oats FKirmer—Pork Weak— Lard Moderately Active—Uoffee Strong— Sugar Heavy—Naval Siores Tending Upward—Petroieum Higher. Wrpnespay, Jan, 21—6 P. M, There was but a moderate movoment in merchan- dise to-day, the unfavorable state of the weather counteracting the influence exerted by the higher goid premium. On’Uhange flour and wheat were dull, and ruled in-buyer’s favor, the latter selling lower, Corn was steady, while oats were rather steadier, . though atill selling at irregular prices, Whiskey was a shade easier. Pork and lard were without decided change. Cotton was offered more ireely in consequence of ac- cumulating stocks, and “futures” suffered a slight decline. Coffee was generally held tor higher prices, Sugar wasin buyer's tayor, Naval stores and petroicum moved freely at higner prices.
