STOCKS FLUCTUATING. WALL STREET, } Monpay, Jan. 12—6 P. M. ‘The action of the House of Representatives to- @ay has been extremely important, It exhibits antagonism to the idea of inflation, which of late seems to nave become so popular. It obeys the @reater and grander idea of retrenchment. It wWecognizes the necessity of economy. It says, in #0 many words, “Let us have less expenditure, Jess outlay under the cover of buchu enactments, Jess iniquity in the shape of money paid for public swindies and less of those public deviltries that ave done so much to destroy public confidence.” ‘The government seems to be doing much in its @aily reports to convey an impression of strength, espectally with reference to its outstanding legal tenders, but there are certain indications that Sn extraordinary farce is being played, Reports are ‘Rot facts, THE MONEY MARKET. Monpay, Jan. 12-6 P. M. The markets were pretty generally steady, with @ iair business in the leading commodities, On *Change flour was firm, while wheat was dull and decidedly lower. Business was small and the mar- ket closed with a downward tendency. Corn was active for speculation, but with only a limited shipping demand. The market was strong. Oats were steady, with a moderate business, Wiiskey was again higher, with moderate receipts. Pork and lard were quiet, but without material alteration, The cotton market opened decidedly firmer, and “spot” and “futures” advanced, but heavy receipts caused a reaction and the improvement in “futures” was lost, Groceries were without material change. Correx.—The market for all descriptions was very firm. The sales of Rio embrace 1,523 bags per steamer Merrimack, a resale of 2,000 bags per Mozart, both on private terms, and, at Baltimore, 809 bags per Mendora on private terms and 1,600 bags per May Queen at 7c. gold. Cottox.—The demand for cotton on ihe spot was but moierately active, but holders were very tirm and of- fered sparingly, and an advance of 3c. per Ib. on all Was established, but barely maintained towards close of the market, when the offerings were more liberal, For future delivery the market opened. str atan advance of 3c. a owing partly to better Vices from Liverpool. ‘The advancing tendency of the market was arrested, however, by heavy receipts at the ports, and the market reacted under increased offerings to sell. At the close the market Was quiet, with the ad- vance lost. ‘The unusually large receipts at New York contributed largely to the depression of the market. We quo i— Ordinary ..
