Certificates for equal amounts of the par value of The Prospeets----Are Prices Ad- vancing Too Rapidly? MONEY IN GOOD DEMAND —_->—— Gold Strong, with Symptoms of a Rise. Mowpay dan, 0PM. ‘The manner in which the stock market has been manipulated to-day is significantly suggestive of achange 1m the situation, which may occur at a moment least expected. Up to this time “the street” has been largely infuenced by the opera- tions of individuals, Capitalists bave borne the brunt of the fight made in favor of advancing prices, and the good feeling encouraged by their success has permeated outside classes to such an extent that many thousands of dollars were sent into business circles to be invested on what was supposed tobe a rising market. The prevailing question to-night, however, is whether prices have reached the top—for the altitude must be reached some time—or whether there are still two, three or four per cent in the active shares of the mar- ket. Immediately present indications favor lower figures and the remark is general that the advance has been too sharp to be healthy. Whatever may be the course ,of government, the action of the Treasury, the outlay of greenbacks, the strength of the banks, there is still a local and Jogical argument which the Wall street speculator ‘will always apply to the situation, and its measure ‘will be the ability which he retains to move what he conceives to be values in the face of existing conditions. Cautionis one of the chief elements of Wall street success, and there have been few ays during the last month when its propriety has been more carefully considered than during the last six or eight hours. If the market is about to turn in the face of the promises oi Congress, the change means more or less of disaster to a con- siderable class. If, on the other hand, we can arift along for another pair of days in the present style, ‘there isa prospect of fair profit on short turns, Allthe probabilities, however, favor a reaction, and for no other reason than that above stated—to wit, that the advance has already been unhealthily rapid, fever- iehiy stimulated and generally overworked. A very peculiar feature of the pending specuiation 1s the effort made by various corporations to mag- Buly their railroad earnings. These may be true or false. The public, who are most interested, nave ‘watched these things for themselves, and we have Mttle comment to make. THE MONEY MARKET ‘was active at 7 per cent on call, with exceptional rates at 5 and 6 percent. The ruling quotation ‘Was at the higher rate. The outstanding lega) tender quotation 1s $379,000,000, being an increase of $218,000. Tis leaves $21,988,000 of the $44,000,000 stil unissued. The loan certificates in the banks early to-day were $970,000, but alterwards were Feported at $550,000, a decrease Oi $420,000. For- eign exchange was quiet and firm on the basis of 482% a 4.88 for long sterling, and 4.863, a 4.87 for demand. ‘LI. STREET, } SOUTHERN SECURITIES. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold opened buoyantly at 111%, and subse- quently advanced to 111%. Owing to the fact that newspaper reporters -are now exciuded from the Jefferson Market Police Court and denied access to the papers and public records of the institution, but little can now be learned of the disposition of any case that may be taken tnere. Reporters are told to present them- selves at the iron railing, where the prisoner of every grade is arraigned, and ask for information, when, 11 the Clerk sees fit, it willbe imparted. O1 course under this arrangement the public can very easily be Bye in ignorance of any little matters which certain persons do not care to have made ublic. A Sunday morning last the Court was opened by Justice Kilbreth, and merely for the purpose of discharging the watch, ana when this had been accomplished the doors were, at hali-past ten o'clock, closed. Five minutes later an officer pre- sented himself at the door, having in charge on & prisoner a well-dressed, intelligent boy, of ei years of age. Justice ‘Khbreth was just ccanitig down stairs, and, the officer accosting him, re- sate) to know if the child’s case could not be sed of before he (the Justice) left Jor the day. "Renae has the boy been doing?’ asked the magistrate, 7 “de was playing on the corner with a number ot boys, and would not go away when I told lum to,” replied the officer, “Take him wo the station and keep him till to- morrow morning,” Was the verdict of this learned and humane magistrate. The boy, crying as though his little heart would break, was dragged off to the station honse, where he was locked up in & cold, damp cell unl yester- day morning, Whea he was taken to tne Court and this time discharged.
