CowpEn, after alluding ‘to the pleasing reminiscences which gathered’ around these annual gatherings, pro- posed'the first toast, namely :— “The Day we Celebrate—The festival we keep is the ‘civil and religious liberty. | We come around ‘he table of memory to banquet on the good deeds of our Yoreiaihers, and grow good ourselves by that on which iro @ reference to the history of the Pugrims , Be cloned his speech as follows:— Asoen the brief, artiess journal of the Pilgrims, apdfeil to find a single deed seriously detracting from their integrity, their justice and wisdom. ‘With the Bible in their hand and their simple laws, ‘with their churches and schoolhouses, they were ‘4rue to the teachings of the learned and pious Robinson, from whom they parted at Leyden, and wf the noble and enlightened Brewster, their cham- pion and guide 1111 his death. Though they exiled *thomselves from their native soil they left behind potent incentives to duty; aye, those precious in_ @uences which formed the character, inspired the genius and aroused the patriotism of a Cromwell, a 2ym, a Hampden, a Milton, a William of Orange. Zhe spirit of Puritanism in the mother country ahas given her the gradual elevation of the labor- sing classes, the more thorough education of the emmon people, the abolition of the slave trade, ‘the recognition of the rights of religious dissent- ets, the emancipation of the Catholics, the relief 1 the Jews trom civil disabilities, the repeal of the corn laws, and finally, in our own day, a aide enlargement of the electoral suffrage. When we thus turn backward to ‘the epoch of ‘the Pilgrims, even in the full blaze of the lights of ‘the present century, how much we find to admire @nd how iittie to condemn in their entire course! Forever honored be their memory! We look around us—we survey the goodly heritage we en- Jey—we behold cities and States springing into ex- Astence almost as rapidly as were reared the frst ude habitations of our forefathers; we worship #t. altars supported by voluntary contributions; RQ proud preiate stands between ourselves and s@ur Maker; we obey rulers chosen by our @wn free ballot and submit to laws of our ‘Own making; no sovereign sends us his mandates from over the sea; no foreign foeman dares pol- Inte our soll. And when we seek the an » our franchises, the origin of our cacigceaeiens, we find it in the ever Seemorabio ines traced by a few heaven in- men in the cabin of a frail vessel an- on an inhospitable Coast; the brief campact ae Mayflower was our Magna Charta—a little ‘band of ‘ims the founders of our giorious Re- PRESIDENT GRANT. ‘The next regular toast was— ‘The President of the United States, He has carried Liberty, | not if a son of exorbitant theught that the Pilgrims paid the same. Mark, now, the contrast. ‘There was no artist for our forefathers, nor are bang’ conntenances now known to men. more than any powerful contem- per raries, at whose nod the earth embie is their memory revered. Pope, emperor, king, sultan, prince, grand duke, doge, margrave, count, what are they all at the side of the humble company that landed on Plymouth Rock? Theirs iadeed were the ensigns of worldly honor. But the Pilgrims had in themselves that in- born virtue which was more than all else beside, and their landing was an epoch. Who im the impos- ing troop is now remembered but with indifference or contempt. If] except Gustavus Adolphus it is because he revealed a superior character, Con- front the Mayflower ana the Pilgrims with tne rulers who occupied such space in the world, the one ascending into the firmament there to shine forever, while the others have been lol Bi gn | into the darkness of oblivion, to be light only to illustrate the fame \¢ of their unknown contemporaries. Do I err in supposing their destiny an illustration of the supremacy which belongs to the benefit of the moral nature? At first impeded or postponed, they at last prevail. Theirs is a brightness which, breaking through all clouds, will shine forth with ever increasing splendor. Ehave often thought that if 1 were a preacher one of my sermons should be from the text, “A little leaven shall leaven all the Jump.” Nor do know @ better illustration of these words than the influence exerted by our Pilgrims. That small band, with the lesson of self-sacrifice, of just and government of a majority, of equal laws, of the unshrinking loyalty to principle is now leavening this whole Continent, and in the fulness of time willleaven the whole world. By tneir example re- publican ingtitutions have been comprehended, and in proportion as we imitate them will their institutions be assured. Liberty, which we 80 much covet, is not a solitary plant. Always by its side is justice. But justice is Fnothing ery right ap- plied to human affairs. Do not forget, I entreat you, that with the highest morality is the highest liperty. A we a in one of his improvised son- nets, speaking inerty, has said jut who loves that must — be wise and Therefore do the Pilgrims in their bountiful example teach liberty, teach republican institutions, as at an earlier day Socrates and Plato in their lessons of Wisdom taught liberty and helped the idea ofa republic. If republican government has thus far failed In any experience—as perhaps in Spanish- America—it ts because their bpp have been wanting. There have been no pilgrims to teach the moral law. Mr. President, with these thougnts I impertectiy express my obligations to the forefathers of New England and offer to them the homage of a grateiul heart. I would, if I could, celebrate their memory. would make their example a universal lesson and stamp it mm the land. know not what would have been the record of this Con- tinent had they turned back or wavered; but I see clearly that a great example would have been lost. KNIGHTS TEMPLARS’ SEMI-OEN- TENNIAL , + -— Fiftieth Anniversary Ball of Morton Commandery, No, 4, K. T., at the Academy of Music—A Brilliant Affair. The Academy of Music was radiant with beauty and resonant of mirth and pleasure last night, on the occasion of the celebration by Morton Com- mandery, No. 4, Koights Templars, of the semi- centennial anniversary of the founding of their organization. The programme of the evening consisted of an opening overture by Graffula’s fall band and orchestra, & vocal sole, inspection, review and drill of Sir Knights, a grand proménade and ball. Noted as have been the annual terpsichorean celebrations of this distinguished commandery the event of last evening eclipsed them all in mag- nificence and lavish display. The invitation tick- ets, designed to be kept by guests as souvenirs, were delicate bronze plates, having embossed on their surfaces a central medalion representing @ troop. of knights riding over a plain, guided by the crimson cross in the heavens and ite motto, “In hoc signo vinces.” This wedalion was flanked by knights standing in ancient armor and modern Uniforet, & suitable inscription, denoting the event commemorated, being scrolted in embossed char- acters on the plate. The list of dances was printea 00 a joliated fan, each Jeat of which was decorated with an exablem of the order, the outer leaves, when folded, being beautifully Mluminated in crim- son, lavender an gold, with the cross, shield and other insignia, it was half-past s1x before the order of Inaugural ceremonies was begun, and the boxes, galleries and seats of the auditorinm of the Academy were fifled with a magnificent array of lovely women and courtly men.
