Asai ass ai pic the anon | Ta 10 THE EDITOR OF Li NEW YORK HERALD :— i Sin—You would frentt oblice many residents of New York if you could tell us how it is that in this city, which always has been badly lighted up, ete dark- ness increases every day; everywhere it may be ob- served that lamps are removed, without being replaced J others. In this season of rain and snow, when the reets, and especially the crossings, are covered with nick coat.of mud, no person, specially a lady lady, is able to pass along’ the streets ‘after dark without be! Dexpattored from head to foot, notwit) standing the arent est care. With the aid of the gaslamps they were able to avoid dangerous places; but there are not enough of them, and especially so in the uptown districts, where the light of the saclamps is not reinforced by that ot the stores. Lamps that are placed at distance of from 90 to 100 feet apart must necessarily leave dark a lai art Su intervening space, even if supplied with t] st of gas and large burners. That dark, space is absolute ‘uin for clothes, dangerous to life and limb, not to speak of the advantage {t oifers to thieves and robbers. In all large and well governed cities of Europe and America the lamps are placed at a distance of not more than 40 or 50 feet, and consequently they shed all the light neces- oy to enable pedestrians to walk along without danger fife and limb or spoiling their clothes. It would be simply ridiculous for authorities to excuse this lamentable state of affairs by the plea of economy, for in the entire city there could not be found a dozen sensible men who would prefer to get stuck in the mud, to break their bones or {0 be quietly robbed rather than pay for the only reme ay enough, 18 lam) pled Economy is a very fauanble virtue, but only if #9) ied in the Tight directions it practiced. in this respect it is simply an evidence of stupidity or criminal ett TPRADERS) DEPOSIT COMPANY, | & | LIBERTY street—Money fo loan on approved collaterais, Y Agi) fe LOTTER PRICE OF TICKETS 4+ greath: Circulars with full information sent Prizes cashed.
