10 setts Politicians Opening Gribernatorial Campaign. "The ‘Hoar Cathering-at Ham= ilton Hall. [BACK-PAY HEROES TO THE REAR. “Tittle Ben’s” Title to the Gov-* ernorship Not Accepted. COMMITTEES AND CAUCUSES. Speeches Favoring Another Term for the Present Executive. Bostow, Jaly 25, 1! In response to a circular addressed to ‘prominent republicans of the State a meeting was held in Hamilton Hall at noon to-day. About one hundred were present, including in their numbers Mr. £&. Rockwood Hoar, Mr. George F. Hoar, Mr. Henry L. Dawes, Mr. H. H. Coolidge, Mr. Adin Thayer, Mr. John M. Forbes, Mr. Henry D, Hyde, Mr. M. P. Dickinson, Colonel Henry Smith, Mr. J. M. Cummings, of Woburn; Mr. George P. Thompson, of Worcester; Mr. A. W. Beard, of Brookline; Dr. Samuel A. Greene, Mr. Hurd, of Worcester; Senator Bancroft, of Worcester; Mr. Mr. Barnard, of Worcester; Mr. Harvey Jewell, Mr. William S. Robinson, Avery Plumer, General George H. Gordon, My. Robert 0. Fuller, of Cambridge; Mr. John E. Baniord, of Taunton; Mr. Barker, of Pittsfield; Ex- Lieutenant Governor Tucker, Mr. Chester J. Reed, of Dedham; Mr. John B. Baldwin, Worcester, ‘and others. REMARKS OF JUDGE HOAR. The meeting was called to order at noon by Mudge Hoar, who briefly addressed the meeting. Judge Hoar said that the meeting had been walled as the result of an informal gathering of weveral well known republicans in his office in Pemberton equare a fortnight since, to take some action in view of the Gubernatorial campaign, ‘which was soon to open in this State. The meet- ing was @ private one for consultation, anda sin- gular fact was connected with it. The same after- moon there appeared in the Traveller what pur- ported to be a report of proceedings of a meeting ‘by a reporter who was present, and in which it ‘was stated that it was to organize a bolt in case a certain person should obtain the @omination for Governor at the Republican Convention. No reporter was present at the meeting, and all who were present were gentle- . Men of honor, whose word could be taken, and no eport was authorized. Near by, however, was the office of a person who has attempted to be Gover- nor of this State, and three persons were seen to come from it and hover about the room in which the meeting was held. They remained near the door, and one of them, on the pretence of looking dor aman for business purposes, opened the door sna looked sround and saw who were present. ‘The men were seen to return to the office whence ‘they came. WASHBURN WANTS ANOTHER TERM. Some of the statements purporting to bea re- (port were true, but the greater number were false. “The statement that it was to organize a bolt was ‘the first intimation, Judge Hoar said, he had of any such thing, and It was false from beginning to end. The simpie object of the meeting was to Anitiate, if possible, some movement which should fecure to the people of the State a expression of their will in the selection ‘of @ candidate for Governor. They met as friends of Governor Washburn, desirous that she should be re-elected, and seeing no eee why he should not. They remember his ng and exemplary public service and the high zoaruon which he everfhad tor honor, integrity nd ability; they remembered that while chairman of the Committee on Claims in Congress it was enough for tuat body to know Sage he endorsed a ‘measure, aud one which he opposed had a very hara time getting through that body. Not only were they frieuds of Governor Washburn, but they did not wish to see the State of Massa- wehusetts run either by fireworks or a@ torch- light procession. (Laughter and applause.) They ‘believed that the popular sentiment of the State ¢was against the man who was making a demand for the office of the Governor of the State, and they ‘were not disposed that any “Tichborne claimant” Phould have it, either with or without band of music, (Laughter and applause.) In conclusion podee Hoar called for a nomination for chairman, Hon. H. H. Coolidge, formerly President of the | Ses, was ubanimously chosen and made a brief ech. MR. COOLIDGE SAID i ‘that he had information about two minutes pre- | vious that he would be proposed ior presiding officer, and it gave him very little time to prepare anything to say. He was deeply gratifiea, how- ver, to be called to preside over a body of gentie- men, among whoin he saw so many who had been ‘Scentified with the cause of liberty in Massachnu- #etts, and who could be called the fathers of the republican party. He hoped the action of the meeting would be such that the will of the people amight be secured, and such a man be placed at ‘the head of the State that it sbould receive no detriment. Every State in the Union ‘was looking to the issue of the contest ‘with an anxiety which cannot be appreciated here, to see whether Massactiusetts wil take such a bay as to endorse the greatest disgrace which o fallen upon the nation in the salary grab, the chief organizer oi which is a claimant oj the bighest office in the Commonweaith. If this is true, is there any live republican who can for a amoment think that the republican party of this ‘Union can stand if Massachusetts, which has always ‘been leader, take such a course. (Applause.) in conclusion Mr. Coolidge called for the completion of the organization of the meeting; and Mr. Bar- er, of Pitisteld, and Mr. 0, B, Doolittle, were ry Secretaries. 4 PLAN OF ACTION. + Mr. HEexry D. HYDE, of Boston, said that they had “ail met with one object, and there was no use in diaguising it, and that was to defeat the desires of @ man who was working hard to secure the repub- can nomination for Governor of Massachusetts, it was necessary therefore that some plan of ‘action shouid be proposed, and he moved the ap- eS: of a committee to nominate a perma- nt organization, to take care that the Repuvlic m@eceives bo detriment in the Fall campaign. Mr. CHESTER J. REED called attention to the fact that there was a State Central Committee of the wepublican party of Massachusetts, and inquired whether such 8D organization might not be in onflict with the scheme. He would know how hat committee stood, whether any of them had ioe over oF not, and it was a question whether oe be interfering with the business of that connie ar. HYDE said that the matter had been well con- idered, and it had been felt that some further g@ction was necessary. It was well known that the er ion'who desired to be Governor was orgauizing forces already, and it was their duty to meet @rganization with organization and effort with a n. Mr, REED was in favor of some course by ‘wirigh every person who is opposed to the nomina- ‘ion\.of anybedy else than Governor Washburn Pont be at She primary meetings. ona GEORGE F, Hoan, of Worcester, moved to ament\ \the resolve by substituting that a commit- Bee be appointed to report a permanent commit- fee, whas'e duty it shall be to perpetuate the in- tegrity o1 the republican party and promote the —— of the Si Mr. Hyde accepted the substitute, and it waa Unanimously’ adopted. The Minds of the thinking people of the State are en- rely fixed on this question. Of courae there isa “difference of opinion with regard present Governor. There are active members of the repub- lican party who wish that he was in cone matters different, but they all believe in him, in his honesty, his modesty ‘and his Latestity and the very fact of his differing with them in certain matters makes him a stronge! pperg Sones Bee the people. of the State thaieh ne ‘was two years ag In conclusion Mr, Jewell said that it was evident the gentlemen eigen ing the meeting were de- termined to stand by him, the Commonwealth, ¥ (AppIaNse.) A. W, BEARD’S OPINIONS. The Chairman then called upon Mr. Alanson W. Beard, of Brookline, who responded substantially bay ay ey Mr. Beard sata he did not desire to make any ech, and did not deem one necessary. He be- eved the pedple were all right in their convictions if they would but do their duty at the primary It was there that the battle was to be ; there was no use minc ing the matter; tne fact was that there was one man that they did not want to have as Governor of the State, however many there might hom they would like to have for the honor o; the Commonwealth and of the republican party. {Applause.) He supposed the one yanearion of the mee! ting. was how to prevent that man being Gov- ernor of Massachusetts, At any rate he personally came there and went to Worcester two years ago for that purpose. He did not know what that man had done to entitle him tothat office. He did not taeataf where to look for his claim. Gentlemen certainly cannot look for itin bis military career, they cannes find it in bis financial ability and they cannot find itin asteady-going support of the present Tecmtaatrccee for no man evinced such wae to what was the crowning act of the ministration—the bye! with England— than Benjamin F. Butler. (Applause.) He also felt that the people outside the State were looking with auxiewy to the action of Massachusetts in this crisis, and be had no doubt the republicans would do their duty. (Loud applause.) THAYER ON THE SIGNS OF THR TIMES. ‘The Chairman then cance een Adin Thayer, of Worcester, a8 8 man tho wil of te jar with the machinery by Poo the” wil the a fd a) in political affairs can be ressed, ayer Was rreeted with pein | le said tua he certainly ae ech to make. He had come down, as he sup) most of the others | had, as business men evise ways and means to prevent a result which they would all generally regret to see in Massachusetts. He knew that there was no division of sentiment whateve! men who were gathered there, jd the only thing to know was the means to adopt. 1t is the same old story, and they wanted the same means adopted which they had two years been greatly impressed by a remark w! W. Beard had made to him but a few days pre- vious. He inquired of him (Beard) if there was any need of this great scare in Boston about tho candidate for Governor. Mr. Beard replied that there was not; three republicans out of iour are opposed to a certain candidate ; but the trouble is that three men don’t go to the caucuses while the fourvh man always does. There ig no other earthly trouble, said Thayer, but that just contrive to get the re ublicans out on this matter and it is settled. Every republican should understand, even if a special ore Was necessary to do it, that it was lus duty to tend the caucuses, 1¥ UB DON’T HE IS A BNEAK. The caucus system is open to objections, Perhaps a better system might be devised ; but at any rate it is the system of Massachusetts that has to be used, and the question has got to be settlea by it. There Was no trouble in his own district; they were all right, but he apprehended there might trouble in Boston and some other places, It was the duty of republicans in these places to see that their brother republicans were at the primary meetings, and such influences should be brought to bear on them as would accomplish thatend, There could be no doubt of the sentiment of Massachusetts, and the only thing was to get the men to the cau- cuses. (Applause.) WIGGIN’S UNSHAKEN HOSTILITY. Mr. CHARLES E. WIGGIN, of Ward Three, in this city, was next called upon, made brief speech in which he avowed his unshaken hostility to General Butler as @ candidate for Governor. THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED. The committee at this point entered the hall, and, through their Chairman, Hon, George F.
