The whole had its sad as well at its comic side. It was no doubt side-splitting ‘“drollery to see the poor marketmen rushing about to save what wer ot bat ofthe débrisof a iivellnood, It was infinite! funny to see booths and lumber to the value of $100,000 destroyed with such vim and it. It so happen that not one in five ores the wwners ofthe booths knew what was taking gnd had left their accounts in their o! meee, But the order was to tear everything to pieces, sana it wasreligiousiy adhered to. Indeed the work- men on the roofs seemed to have concetvea ®@ perfect mania of destruction, for along ‘West street they not only tore down the booths themaeien: “outside the curb line,” ‘Dut bravely went to work tearing down the root ‘of ‘Washington Market itself. Not a few owners of Jegitimatestalle will be surprised this morning by seeing their Pavel aia with the cnippings ot ‘their own, Lae ae Avont halfan hour after the ‘work had king along West street from “Wesey to Fuit bg one would have supposed that some terrible hurricane had passed over, destroy- ing everything mm its fatal course. ‘And still the hundred men on the roof worked away witha won- deriul ardor, and the noise was Babylonian with- out @ moment’s cessation. In the meantime the august BOARD OF HEALTH, -meaded by its President, Dr. Chandler, sat in state inside. the market, surrounded by a variety of Bwelis and @ posse of policemen. Now and then ‘some ublortunate owner would appeal for aid, or for a moment's grace to aliow him to remove ‘is property or his books. Mrs. O'Donnell, an old Jady, weighing some three hundred pounds, and ‘the very bicture of health, broke in upon the dig- nity of the Board. ant you men to understand,” she excl: 4na voice made peculiarly shrill by anger, you're a Jot of pu doctors, and you don’t know ‘what you’re a doing. Here have, I been in this mnarket thirty years, and I’m healthy, I guess. I’ve Sree up @ family that never had the cholera, a I dely you to find any cholera as ever hap- pened in this market. You want to take the bread ‘out of the widow’s mouth, don’t you. Don’t come and tell me that you want to keep the city’s health. it’s alot you care ior that. You aren’t satistied with killing your patients—you want to kill decent, wespectable folks that never bothered you. Don’t mel ot one gutters are dirty. Go and lock at The Board stood all this very patiently, bel got Wather angry when a delegation waited upon it to make the statement that this was an arbitrary act, ‘without the suspicion of justice, as they kad never ‘been officially notified of the clearing away of their stands. Dr. Oleander insisted that every one of ‘them had been personally notified, which the dele- gation as stoutly denied. All at once inspector Walling came up to ask if the men were obeying. orders in tearing away the root ofthe Market. The Board said certainty not, and gave the order that work should cease for a time. After consultation it was then decided that ‘the rafters on the curb stone supporting the roof should be leit standing, but everything outside cleared, his was not before a great deal of the market property had been destroyed, for which the owners intend to sue te city. The work was then resumed with the old en- ‘thusiasm, and tle Vesey street stalis began to puffer. The owners of these stalls were all congre- gcc on the sidewalk watching their property era One owner said to the HERALD re- rter, “Those West street men all voted for Fevorm, I guess they’ve got a bellyfull of 11 now. Tweedie wouldn't have done this.” Another one—Tilton, of Tilton & Hoff, on the worner of Vesey and West sireets, said:. “I paid $10,000 last year for the good will of these ‘two stalls, and the Board of Aldermen gurranteed that both my piaces were legally erected.” As he was speaking dewn came his roof to the sidewalk, nd both he and the reporter narrowly escaped. ‘The work up Vesey street progressed rapidiy, and the Stalls, which are more closely built than those on ‘West street, succumbed rapidiy to the blows of the workmen. in many of them provisions were stil stored, and in some instances were destroyed. The Board of Health came up to see this part of ‘the work, and in answer to prayers of owners gave some humane orders to respect property. What- ever could be consistently saved was saved here, andthe board repudiated the idea of wishing to destroy anything which did not come under the ntriet letter of the law. On West street the owners of stalls which were demolished were ‘William Donnelly; Honey, Luther & Co.; J. Brown, Haipin & ‘ease, L. Biohm & Co., James Hernon, B. Meanwhile & HERALD reporter strolied up and down the almost deserted passage way bounded by the condemned building in Fulton street. and Which was to be made level with mother earth. Young Mr. Law, the proprie- tor of the place, lugged his melons, weighing im the average twenty pounds apiece, across the lane of legal and illegal position, and swore be- tween his teeth meanwhile. ‘Call this a city gov- aa (A terribie expletive here followed.) , all the power is in the hands of the Ma) or MA what's arco man to do for his rights 1’ dently he hi: been reading ‘Volney’s Decay “Or Empires,” and the reporter thought it unreason- os i rs nim solace in his distressed condition of min Passing on, a young German is met, almost in a lachrymous condition. He said, with a species of heavenly resignation, “We must submit, sir; we must submit!” ‘To this truism there was nothin to be added. He then went on to say—“A gr many people here huve leit their Poke in their stalls, and I believe that they will be lost. I am getting uw @ wrecking party to break in to save the books.” Accordingly our Teuton iriend soon got some friends together and commenced saving books, old hats and that variety of goods which will accumulate even in the best arranged shan- ties in Wushington Market, built over the gutter. Many telegrams were sent to absentees inform- ing them of the work of devastation which had commenced and req ting their carly attend- ance. Some arrived, but the majority did not ar- rive till too late, when they tound their sheds in ruins and no shelter for their stock, which was ur- Tiving by rail and water. Some desperate procrastinators had not re- moved their butter till nearly ten o'clock, and as they worked under the trembling gas light whica came irom the gasalier overhead, it might be seen that they were perspiring to a fearful extent aud pule with anger and excitement. ORDER BEFORE THE STORM, At last the last barrel of potatoes and of pork had been transferred, and minutiz, such as the dimtuutive mirrors appertaining to the fair sex, had been removed or the fugitive shoe lace thrown around it for saie keeping had been carted off, and all was ready for the BOARD OF HEALTH’S FELL SWooP. At last the corner ol West street was turned, and a benevolent old German carpenter, at the head of @ troop, tore off rooijs and ripped out sides of shanties with flendisn glee, apologizing mean- while with a broken, stereo! typed excuse, “You know if I did not do it somebody else would.” On came the ,tearers and smashers, very types of Asmodeus, taking off the fronts of houses, Smash went the glass out of skylights, then down tumbled an immense beam with count- jess meat hooks, and, in short, to save words in description, A BULL IN A CHINA SHOP okt dy to the mind but a faint idea of what these Board of Health men did, Round passed the doc- tors, smiling and ae and pleased at their great work. Around the street corners, however, tearful groups might be seen, cursing the majesty of the Board of Health. ‘A BRIGHT SCENE. At a quarter to eleven the whoie zinc roof of the corner shanty, at the corner of Fulton and Wash- ington, came ‘o the ground with a crasa, and stood piled up against the lawp-post, shining in the bright rays of the moon like an immense diamond In one of the neighboring sueds stood Mr. Vogts, who wore diamonds, and was joking over the loss of his stand. He had got out kis little hatchet, hke the immortal George, and was cut- ting his place to pieces, “Never mind,” said the young Sig roltt Market gentleman, “I shall go to the Branch to-morrow!” (Liere an extra vicious hack witn bis hatchet.) After cutting olf many inches of green paint and grease he smilingly looked at his diamond and withdrew to take a drink at a neighboring hostelry and to con- sole himself in the mutability of all human things. AS We go to press the market carts are arriving at Washington Market and chaos reigns supreme, ‘The hatchet und saw are busy at work, and as our readers are enjoying their matutinal HERALD the last biows will be avout failung, which will obliterate from the memory of New Yorkers the toul, noisome shanties situ- ated over the gutters at Washington Market. Homeless and desperate are now the thousands of rats who have hithe:to held undis- puted sway neath the gutters of the mar- ket. Last night they {elu that the Moment of the irrepressible couflict had come, and glared, thousand strong, at the carpenters and olucemen who came to make them homeless. Vkere the rodents have gone to in their exodus no mun knows, but if they Should be encamped in the main body of the market it is possibie that some night they will carry off the venerable watch- inan in spite vi his large cluy. THE CLAIMS OF THE MARKETMEN. They Think Their Rights Invaded and Want the City to Build a Market or Allow Them to Balld It. To THE Epitor OF THE HERALD :— For the past few weeks the entire newspaper press of the dity have been pouring their vials of wrath upon a portion of the denizens of Washing- ton Market, claiming it to be all at once an un- healthy and pestilent locality, especially the stands and stalls that happen to project into the street, and more particularly still those on West street, which, it is claimed, inter‘ere with the passage of the cars on that street, and I nave waited pa- tiently, but so far in vain, for somebody to come to the defence of those whom your correspondent believes to have been unjustly assailed. It has been my fortune or misforfune, as the case may be, to have occupied for the past three years an office in one of the stands in that pestilent locality known 98 West street sidewalk, where the business is almost exclusively wholesale beef and mutton, and during that time (thanks to our eMcient clork, Mr, J,Kettle- man and his assistant, Mr. Romaie), I have never known the market, and especially that portion of it, 80 cleanly as now. That the projection of the stands into the street is an inconvenience to the railroad company and to the public your corre- spondent will not deny, but that it would make Any great differenee in the healthfumess of the locality is not generaliy believed. With the ex- ception of Foe gt @ small portion of Vesey and Fuiton streets I do not believe the removal of these stands would benefit the market in a sani- tary point of view. ‘rhe truth is, the whole market ought to be wiped out and @ new one, worthy of tne name, ought to be built, and the market people did ail that they could ligt Winter, wuile the Legislature was tn session, for the Seay otl intent of this object, and after having got the bill through 1t was vetoed by the Governor ; 80 we stand now just as we did be- fore we began, and have, therefore, only to wait and try again. While conceding that the removal of these stands mult be an advantage to the travelling pubic, the railroad company in particular, from whence It is surmised all this pressure comes, it would turn out of emptoyment some two hundred or three hundred persons and break up and per- pape ruin entirely @ good many of them, who, a rely. on the protection and fair dealing of the o!
