PIOUS vets gong |e ats Clerical Follies in the Chureh | of England. Three Clergymen Who Have Erred and Strayed from the Fold Like Lost Sheep. Penal Servitude as a Reward for Re- ligious Shortcomings. A Clergym Sent To Penal Servit: {From the Manchester Examiner ana Times, July 9.) At the Central Criminal Court yesterday, be- fore Mr. Gommissioner Kerr, R, A. Berson, thirty years of age, who had adopted the title of “Reverend,” was indicted for marry- ing Emily Sarah Boulton, his wife, Emily Gambier Kiad, being alive. Mr. Poland, Mr, Mon- tagu Williams and Mr, Mead were counsel for the the prosecution, and Mr. Palmer defended. The tircumstances attending the case were of a most extraordinary character. It appeared that in 1870 the prisoner went to Armagh, in Ireland, as assist- Ant master Of a school there, and that he made the acquaintance of a Miss Kidd, the daughter of a Jus- tice of the Peace, whom he induced to marry him. He treated her very badly, and left her after few months had elapsed. He came to London, ae through the medium of an advertisement in ie Matrimonial News he got into correspondence tied @ Miss Emily Boulton, the daughter ofa re- tired naval officer living at Clapham. He wrote a fetter, in a very pious strain, to Mr. Boulton, ask- ing the hand Of his daughter, and re, epee that he had received the appointment of the he: Mastership of a new college in the Brazils, worth poe and a residence, besides some prop- and that he expected in afew years to to retire ou # handsome fortune. Event. tay ‘Miss Boulton was married to the prisoner in February last. Both marriages were proved, and the prisoner ‘was found guiity. Mr. Williams then gave some details of the oner’s life, which, he said, unfolded a career of the most unmitigated profligacy. In 1869 he was as- epee master at a ovilege at Finchley, and he pro- to miss Cox, the daughter of the principal of the college, but Mr. Gk finding out his antece- dents, sent him proceeded to Oxford, where he stayed a short ee and among his pa- pore was a bastaray order, and his letters showed ‘was engaged to a girl named “Lizzie.” April he proposed to a young lady named Alien. He was next ivuund at Armagh, where he married Miss Kidd. After leaving her he advertised in the irish Times and other papers, with a view to mat- rimony, and he induced @ young lady to accom. 2 ny him irom Dublin to Holyhead, and at the lat- r place she ieund the prisoner in her bedroom. ‘On coming to London he advertised in the Matrt- monial } aud got into correspondence with about thirty young ludies, and he umduced General te lend him £200, The learned Commissioner sentenced him to five years’ penal servitude. ‘The Charges of Drunkenness and Im- morality Against a Clergyman. {From the Liverpool Daily Post, July 10.) The inquiry into the allegations of drunkenness and immorality, brought by the wardens and sides- men of All Saints, Hindley, against the Vicar, the Rev. 0. H. Newbold, was resumed yesterday morn- ing before the Lord Bishop: of Chester, the Ven. Archdeacon Johnson, Messrs. W. W. Fioulkes, bar- rister, and R. A. Harrington, assessors, at the Wigan Borough Court. Ann Anderten, daughter of last witness, said her sister Mary was a stout, plump girl; he came tothe house of witness’ yrandmother in ‘June, 1871, and said to witness, ‘How stout your sister is getting! Jet me feel how youare;” he did not get hold of ‘witness then, for her ‘grandmother stopped him as ~ was falery' her round the house; once in the e seized witness’ arm, when she onnd. and said, “What are you doing?” oe replied, “I beg your pardon;” en anuther oc- casion, on’ the doorstep, he pinched her arm and it ‘was sore for some time. Mr. Orton—You uid pot think he was meaning ny harm? Witness—I believe he was trying the same as he ‘had dene before, and I would not let him. Mr. Orton—You told him, when he be ey you, you would give him black eyes “Do you mean it ?’” “yes, I tibet it yet.” (Wit- peace Spiceminet manner created much laughter court. Asked it that was his only reason, he said no doubt they would positively @eny it now; he had been to one woman and asked whether defendant had taken ‘any liberties with her; she denied it. (From the Liverpool Daily Mercury, July 9.) At the Menai Bridge Petty Sessions on Monday, She Rev. John Williams, M. A., rector of Beaumaris, ‘was summoned to show cause why he should not ‘be adjudged the putative father of a child of whom Elizabeth Jones was the mother. The case orig- {nally came on for hearing at the September ses- sions, but owing to the de‘ect in the Bastardy act ‘the summons had to be withdrawn and the case ‘commenced de novo. Mr. Marcus Louis, of Ruthin, and Mr. William tags of Conway, were dor the applicant, and Mr. Jordan, barrister, instructed by Messrs, Barker and Hughes, pre dg for the delendant, who was present during * the. hearing of the case, Mr. James, the Tegistrar, watched the case on behalf of the Bishop of Bangor. The hearing occupied more than nine hours, and, owing to the respectable station in Ite of both ‘complamant and defendant the proceedings attracted considerable interest and caused a crowded court.
