~ PIMNGL AND COMMERCIAL, | esse A Lively Day in Wall Street. “STOCKS ACTIVE AND STRONG. The Beginning of a Summer Campaign. GOLD FIRM. Continued Ease in the Money Market. Election of Directors in the Erie Rail- toad Company---Report of the President. THE FOREIGN SITUATION, ALL STREBT, TURSDAY, r galy 8—6 P. M. On ’Change to-day cotton was quiet and steady for “spot,” but easier for “future.” Flour was in Detter demand and steadier. Wheat ana corn Were in good demand for export, and firmer. EXPORTS, ‘The aggregate amount of exports (exclusive of specie) from the port of New York forthe week ending to-day was $4.964,510, This shows a de- cline from the average heretofore reported. The total exports of produce since January 1 are $145,174,111 against $111,123,604 last year, and $17,191,096 in 1871, THE MONEY MAREET. Money was easy to-day at from 8 to 4 per cent on call loans, prices for commercial paper also being unchanged. Foreign exchange, however, ad- ‘vanced, and was decidedly stronger, the rates now being 10934 for sixty days’ sterling and 1103 for wight. These prices were frm at the close. We quote :— ‘Thres Daya. London advices state that consois and American Securities closed firmer, owing to rumors that the Bank of England will reduce the rate of discount on Thursday. The rate of discount on three months’ bills in the open market was 1 per cent below the Bank of England rate. The rate for money on government sesurities at the Stock Exchange was 4 per cent, or 2 per cent below the Bank of England rate. The Bank of England bullion increased £149,000 to-day on balance. Five-twenty bonds of 1867 were active, and advanced ¥ percent. They are now quoted at 933; a 93:4; new fives advanced to 905; ; ten-forty bonds declined to 90 a 903. Erie was dull at 48% a 49. Consols for account were 92% a 93. In Frankfort 5-20's of 1862 were 96%. The new French loan is quoted at 6X a 6% premium. GOLD STRONG—115}; a 115%. Gold strongly illustrated to-day the influence of Surrounding conditions. The general activity of the market in other departments, the advance in | exchange, the decline in exports, the engage- ments for the shipment of specie by Wednesday's steamer to the amount of $500,000, the unfavorabie feports concerning the cotton crop and Sonsequent loss to the country, and @bove all, the insignificant amount of gold held in the Treasury after the payment of accrued interest—all these circumstances com- bined to strengthen the position of the bulls and confirm the prediction that, whether the present Price be artificial or not, there are no natural Causes and no governmental means to prevent the | Price from ascending, between this time and the end of the year, to any reasonable figure that may be fixed in the process of speculators, The market Opened with the price at 1154, which steadily ad- vanced until 115% was reached, closing at11b% to 1155s. The rates paid for carrying to-day were 4, 8% and 5 per cent, and flat for borrowing. The fluctuations are shown by the following table :— 12:16 P. M... 115% 12:34 P.M «11554 1:46 P. Out- side orders, on the one hand, are giving substan- tial encouragement, while the tone of the market itself, as illustrated by the improvement in & score of securities, shows that master spirits have again entered the arena and are putting at work influences calculated to give new and brighter color to the situation. Nor are these influences entirely arti- ficial in character. Stocks are in sympathy with the natural growth of the country. A rail- road may be loaded with debt, yet each year Witnesses its wealth enhanced, its usefulness en- larged and its final purpose nearer successful cul- mination than before. 4 SPECULATIVE VALUE attaches to almost every security that is quoted— @ value that ebbs and fows according to the freak of the hour; but at the bottom there is usually something substantial, and in the end, when some fortuitous combination of events develops real strength, thousands are astonished that they did not discover and make use of the fact in time. The movement in New York Central, in Rock Island, in Lake Shore, in Wabash, and the past history of a number of stocks once poweriul, yet. now holding but a mini- mum of the confidence of the community, exem- plify the thought and show that it is prudent to be prepared at any moment for renewed activity generated from reserved forces, adaptive opportu- nities and enterprising generalship. THE VOLUME OF BUSINESS TO-DAY was large, with more than usual strength along the line, prices advancing during the morning from 4 to 3 per cent, although followed by some aecline. Erie was exceptionally weak, owing, perhaps, to the non-declaration of a dividend, uncertainty incident to the election of new directors and the London quotation, The stock opened at 62% and suffered a pounding down to 60%, with final recov- ery to 61%. NORTHWEST COMMON invited more than usual interest, and gave token of an activity that has not attached to the stock for several months. In fact, at a late hour— too late to produce any effect on the market— it was whispered that a very large biock of the stock had changed hands and gone under control o1 the {riends of the road, and thata very few days would probably witness Northwestern pack again in its old place among the lively speculative securi- ties of the market. The opening figure to-day was 71, from which there was @ gradual recession to 6934. In view of favorable information concern- ing the income and condition of the road its friends predict for it @ brighter future, Western Union sold at 84%, improved at the first board to 854, but later succumbed to the general depressing influence, and closed at 84%. Pacific Mail advanced irom 36% to 37%, ana was well sus- tained at the higher prices, though showing a de- cline at the end to 36%, 87, 3734. St. Paul rose from 61% to 52%, losing % per cent at the close, New York Central openéd at 103%, advanced to 10454, but receded and closed at 103%. Lake Shore began work at 9644, went down for a moment to 95%, but recovered and closed at 96 Union Pacific sold at 26% 0 26%, aata 27%; ‘Toledo and Wabash at 00% a 708 703; a 70% a 70% a 70%. Rock Island de. veloped considerable activity, the fluctuations being between 110% and 11134, with a final decline to 110%; Hannibal and St. Joseph sold between 30% and 403; Ohio and Mississippi was steady be- tween 39% a 39%: C., C, & 1.0. rose from 28% to 293g: Harlem showed a rise of 3 per cent from 1264, the opening price, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western soid at 98 a 93%.
