i a ee WESTERN. POLITICS. Smportant Interview with Senator Thurman, of Ohio. His Views on the Allen County Resolations— The Farmers’ Movement—The Back-Pay Bounty Jump—His Candidacy ¢ for Governor. : ‘ — 4 ” POxMicothe (Ohio) Correspondence (July 6) of the . Cincinnati Commercial.) . ‘ne very favorable opinion entertained and the “Righ regard expressed for Mr. Thurman in this eommunity sre general, for the gentleman en- foye the confidence of all citizens, irrespective of political binses, as was evinced by the large gumber of our jeading men, tne majority of whom were working republicans, who joined in the wel- vomiting reception given him at the residence of Dolonel William Allen on Friday night, an account ‘of which was sent you yesterday. With the aesedged of Mr, Thurman soon again appearing fore the pudite, elther in the capacity of the Gemocratio candidate for Governot—who, post “Tory 28 Wil! be seen below, he declines to accept— or as an aspirant for re-election v0 the United Btates Senate, and, possibly in both, a statement ‘df his views, in the unsettled condi:ton of the pub- ‘Mo mind upon the probable course of the de- mocracy on the maby new questions that are springing up for discusston, will be hailed with general favor, no less by demporats than republicans. With the view, of pb- Staining such expression, therefore, I calied ‘upon the Judge at Fruit Hill last night, and ex- plaining to him the object of my Visit found him very willing to state his views upon the subject mentioued. In giving them below I have en- deavored to preserve as near as possible the Sen- Qvor’s exact language. Of course there was much esultory conversation that Ido not reproduce, Such as questions and answers on minor topics; ‘and In transcribing the result of the conversation from my notes taken at the time I endeavor to give it in a connected manner and just as he expressed lt, [believe that Judge Thurman’s opinion upon the Allen county matter has never before been au- Shentically made beret tang it Was upon this topic ‘that I first approached In reply to my question as to what he thought of ‘the movement he said :— THE INTERVIEW. He did not question the motives of those engaged fm what is called tne Allen county movement. put tnought it a mistake. If the democratic party oe id even conclude to disband its organization, urpose to do so will not be left in doubt. No sae issolution could take place unless the great yer of the party was thoroughly convinced that jt ougnt to take place. Were they so convinced, the organization would be abandoned at once, not 4n this or that spot, but all over tae country. But ‘we see nothing of the kind. In every State the maintains its organization, and the talk about abandoning is not the talk of the masses but of politicians, and the masses will never be it to abandon by being told that their party fs odious, that there is an odor of treason about it, g@nd the like offensive expressions that are ire- cory, beard or seen in the papers. They regard Such talk as an insult, and the only effect is to e them adhere to piopacty with more tenacity. Mmucb stress was laid upon the fact that the ten had as constantly defeated ior the last Its opponent under one name or ani her—federaiets, ional republicans or whigs—had been defeated for mote than three times twelve year yet they uilti- muately triumphed in 1840, and again in 1548, and ain in 1860, Lf Ma could persevere, altho : ‘Sefeated so often and for such long tale SCE se gonad party could also persevere. me ‘people su; cd that ali thac was necessary to be done Rion ler to Secure success was to arop the mame of democrat; but no*hing could be more erroneous. What good had resulted to the federal party by dropping its name and taking that of ne- al republicans, afterwards abandoning that for whig? mere change of name effects nothing, and an attampt by politicians to form a new par’ ry ‘with no higher object than success, never did and mever will succeed. The democrats and liberal 2 publicans might well enough act together, and ‘would not be the fault of the democracy if they did not. 1t was mere slang to talk about Bourbon dem . To apply such an epithet to a party that could sacrifice its pride and prejudice, as the democratic party did last year, was simply injus- ‘tice and abuse. He (Mr. Thurman) had been represented as op- toe dareeiery dissolution of the democratic party trom ess and ambition. He denied that he was actuated by any such motives. There is no man in public life who will leave it with less regret thay he ‘will when the people see iit to retire him. FARMERS’ GRANGES, In answer to a question what he thought of the farmers’ movement he said that his information ‘was very limited, but he supposed that the orig: nated in the same way that the r unions arose—from a desire of the farmers to tect and advance their own particular Tiaustry. He fol that the farmers as a odeenl bboy oppreased, and as much as two in r speech in the Senate he iad. 80 aid, and given at considerable length his reasons for so believing. as to the details of the organization of the granges he had no iniorma- tion. He observed that attempts were being made to turn them to political account and promote the aspirations of politicians or would-be politicians; ‘ut if wisdom prevaiied in their councils they ‘would not be made mere stepping-stones for am- bitious politicians. THE SALARY GRAB. Bogen) rey eply toa ies yet about the salary increase, uy at, as well known, he had oppused it i ee firat to a and had caused his back pay to De covered into the Treasury without having drawn a cent of it, and being thus covered into the ‘Treasury he never could draw a cent of it. HE DECLINES BEING A CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR. Jaliuded to the fact that he was named in some of the papers as a candidate for Governor. He sakd he had noticed that suggestion, and with regret; that he could not consent to run for that ot - although he considered none more hunorable, and = hoped that ok: mere Would be said about ‘his being a candidate for it , POLITICAL NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS. “ame Boston ‘Traveller pith pithily says:—"The news- papers hostile to General Butler find nothing to ‘condemn in his Framingham speech, and are now criticising him for what he did not say. These Atitics are not easily satisfied.” ‘, Bx-Governor J. W. Throckmorton, of Texas, has ‘withdrawn his name from public consideration as @ candidate for Governor, ‘The Albany Argus (democratic), referring to thé pati ‘Butler republicans (especially its neighbor, “the Journal), declares that “it is am affectation of ignorance and an open affront to treat General Butler as one whose society and whose leadership ere a disgrace.” The Argus thinks the General is 00 valuable for that. “Butler's speech at Framingham is unusually ‘tame and vapid,” says the Albany Journal (repub- Tican), and then goes on to give a column editorial 4m reply to some of the General's arguments, ‘The farmers out West celebrated the Fourth by Yeading a new declaration of independence—inde- pendence from railroad and ali other kinds of mo- opoly tyranny. About eight weeks ago General George B. McClel- lan, Engineer in Chief of the Department of Docks, resigned bis position under the belie! that a gen- eral chanze might be inaugurated by the new Com- missioners who were shortly to be appointed by the provisions of the new charter lately passed at Albany. His resignation was accepted with regret by the old Board. A noteworthy fact of General MoViellan’»adminis- tration, which lasted @ little over two years, was his voluntarily reducing his salary from twenty thousand to ten thousand per apnum. It ts be- lieved that if larger funds had been at General McClellan’s disposttion, or rather at the Dock Com- missioners’, more practical results would have been witnessed in the present deplorable condition Il of wharves and pier than are now to be secn.
