, THE RAID ON THE RING. Whe Asrest of a Number of Indicted Per- sonsAmong Them Messrs. Coman, Moaaghan, Rowe and Kingsland—They are Arraigned and Enter Into Bonds to Auswer—Excitement About the City; Hall and Court House. Yesterday week the HERALD made the exclu- jive announcement that im the Court of Oyer and Yerminer on the previous day indictments had een presented by the Grand Jury against a num- ber of persons more or less intimately connected with the practices of Taminany in “ways that ure Hark” and tricks that were certainly “not vain,” the fabulous sums said to have been pocketed yy Tweed and company really reached their pock- Bta. From day to day ever since we have had re- ports of names mixed up with these indictments, Dut the officials of the District Attorney’s office kept thetr information pretty well to themselves. Over a week after the indictments had been found, jnd.some of the accused (including ex-Alderman Coman) had surrendered themselves, and, tendering pail, had been turned away, the bench warrants were signed by District Attorney Phelps, and on Monday night, at a late hour, were placed in the hands of Superintendent Matsell for execution. This Wact was carefully guarded from the press, and not til yesterday morning, when Captain Irving, of e Detectives’ office, and his assistants, Officers Et pat Dusenberry and Heidelberg, and Inspec- stor mybary amare at raiding upon the accused, fwas anybody aware that the parties were likely to doe arres' Before two o'clock Captain Irving apa. his officers had arrested ex-Alderman thomas Coman, ex-Alderman Peter Monaghan, yot the Fourteenth ward, and his partner, yone Rowe, and Phineas ©. Kingsland, a searcher in the Comptroller's office, on various jouarees of felony, fraud and forgery. Against some Nhere are @ number of indictments. Mr. Coman \gave $12,000 bail, Mr. Monaghan $5,000, Mr. Rowe 5,000, Kingsland, on three indictments, 6,000, The particulars of the charges will appear ‘hereafter in the Court proceedings. It is understood that the detectives want etght (Other persons, including ex-Senator Norton, who (may possibiy be arrested ere the HERALD reaches its readers. The rumored arrest of these parties created reat excitement about the City Hall, and the NRovementa of the detectives were closely watched, "They cireulated between the court room and the ‘District Attorney’s office, and were followed by politicians, wno were excited to fever heat over the mysterious movements of tho oificiais. One of the incidents of the day worthy of mention was the appearance of Captain Irving ‘at the door of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, in cwhich the Walworth trial was progressing. “When he applied for admission he was met by a ‘sheriff's deputy named John Montyiel, to whom he \showed his shield aud asked for the District At- ‘orney. ‘Tho oficer, whom they call ‘Jack,” told Arving he could not get in and shut the door in his face. Irving subsequently secured sufficient in- fluence to work upon Jack Montvtel to gain ad- jgsion, and after conferring with Mr. Phelps eft im search of other ofienders against the jmajesty of the law. It is said that Mr. Kingsland, ‘of the Comptroller’s office, is not on the pay roll, ‘but, with his father, who went nis bail, is merely “searcher” in the office. The elder Kingsland stated to a HERALD reporter that the indictment did not amount to much. Rumor says that he has deen inthe habit of cashing vouchers for con- tractors who have claims against the city, and it is supposed that the complaint against him has some: connection with these vouchers. ‘ WATERING PLACE NOTES. eee In the neighborhood of what is known as White Sulphur Springs, in West Virginia, there are four- teen springs containing different kinds and quali- ties of water. Lucca will spend the Summer at Kingston, R. I. Bergen Point, N. J., in consequence of its prox- imity to New York, is always well patronized. . Seneca Lake and Hector Falls are the principal features of attraction. At the beginning of the present month there was » drift of snow near the Profile House, on the White Mountains, which was ten feet deep, twenty Teet wide and thirty feet in length; the landlord of the Prospect House reports fifteen feet of snow tor halfa mile on the summit of Moosilauke a few flays ago. If cold weather continues much longer among the mountains travellers will find consid- erable snow in the ravines during the entire Sum- mer. There are over ten thousand water place hoteis and Summer boarding houses a the «Northern and Eastern States. : Kingston, N, Y., o‘fers inducements to visitors for the Summer which very few places claim to surpass. ROBBED AT THE RACES, Senator 8. 8. Cox was robbed of a pocketbook containing $600 on Saturday last on the race course of Jerome Park while in company with Police Com- missioner Russell. Mr. Cox also lost a lot of valu- able papers. The matter has been given in charge to the detectives to look after, but there seems little likelihood of doing anything in it, as the om- cers say there was not g professional thiei on the ground, . ——_+ + “ MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.
