Within the hall an ampitheatre of seats had been arranged and the on ery was reserved for ladies, There was a fe number of well-known gentlemea pres- ent including Recorder Ler auegg, 8 Sheridan Shook, Mr. Appleton, Joun Morrissey, Manton Mar- bie, Neil Bryant and all the billiard experts of the country. Chicago was represented by a delega- tion consisting of Messrs. Bessinger, Slosson and THE COMPETITORS of last night were, irst, Cyrille Dion va. gohn ‘Deery, and Francois Ubassy vs. Maurice Li the present four-ball cham- pion, The table was a very elegant awe of workmanship, finished and decorated gilt, for the occasion. Play commenced at eight o'clock, and as the first pair stepped into the arena they were greeted with applause. Mr. Widor Gayraud acted as umpire, and Robert Wil- marth, a well known Boston “cue,” oficiated as qmarker, In BANKING FOR THE LEAD Dion won tue choice and scored 6 alate of the “spot.” Deery then went in for 3 and made a poor miss. It was evident he did not feel at home—it was not “his night.’ Cyrille in his second inning added seventeen to his score by careful plays, and one capital round the table shot with four cushions. Deery again played for 3 and Dion followed with 12, no briillant execution being thus far dispiayed. Then Deery scored 1 and slipped up trying for another, Dion missed a twisting cushion shot, and Deery came to work to score 0. Dion fot- Jowed the example, and then Deery pat up 2 Nothing interesting occurred untii the eighth inning, when Dion awoke some enthusiasm by a splendid long shot in the cuslion angles, and put 8 to bis string. Deery seemed to be working hard, and could not start a run, Cyrille added 7 to his count, and won more applause by a round the table fine shot. Upto the thirteenth inning play ‘Was dull, when Dion got to work and put up 71 on his counters by magnificent play and cool nerves, He nursed the balis beautifully along the cushion at the foot of the table, up the le/t side cushion and half way across the top, and nis touch was exyui- sitely fine. The score now stood—Dion, 142; Deery, 81, The euthusiasm over the favorite was immense. la his fifteenth inning Dion maae 24, #ud missed in each of the next three essayals. It was awtul upbiil work with Deery, for, with the exception of 10 in his twelfth inning, 6 was the most he made up to lus twenty-tirst, when he made 22, Dion also worked in the single figures five times, and missed three times out of the next eleven innings. In bis thirty-first be made 7, the largest run of the evening, and ‘was overwhelmed with applause. Here he played the balls beautifully along the cushion and made several admirable swilt cross-cushion shots also, in which the balls fairly flashed as they sprung from one angle to another irom the cushions, This set- edthe fate of the gume. In his thirty-second inning Dion missed an easy one, and went out with Sin the thirty-chird, The ‘follow lag suows THE SCORE: Dion—6, 1%, 12, 0, 0, 7, 2, 8 7, 0, 12, 0, 71, 10, % 24, ©, 0, 0, 2, 4, 11, 1, 16, 7, 0, 8 6, 0,1, 75, 0, 8300, "Av erage’ 9 1-11. There Was a marked contrast between him and his boyish op- ponent, young Daly. Daly won in’ scor jor the lead, and missed, Ubassy follow with 1. Then’ Daly came with aruo of 13, and Thassy made 3, Daly followed lis success with 45, and Ubassy made 1, and then followed some uuin- Yeresting play. Daiy was the favorite in affection, but Ubassy had got everybody afraid, and so they put their money on him some, In his nineteenth inning Ubassy made 47 and was immensely applauded, for his play was remarkably fine. Matters ran along tamely until the twenty- frst inning, when Daly, amid tremendous entiu- and ite care in ‘nursing,’? ng, Daly, 176; Ubaasy, 163. This seemed to break Ubassy down and he could not rally, and Daly forged ahead like a hero and | ‘was victor in hig thirty-niath tuning. Verdict of the Coroner’s Jury=A New Motive for the Murders Disclosed. BrEurast, Me., June 23, 1873, The Coroner’s jury in the Thorndike tragedy com- pleted the inquest this afternoon. They find that the father and mother came to their death in con- sequence of blows inflicted upon their heads and faces with an axe, fracturing their skulls; that the infant was either Killed in a like manner, or died from inhaling smoke, heat and fire after the blows were given; that the murders were committed between twelve -and three o’clock at night: that fire was kindled in many places, in and upon the bed and the cribin which the little boy was sleeping, and that the door leading to the room was closed. The jurors further say that the blows were inflicted by John Drue Gordon with malice aforethought, and that the fire was kindled and the door shat by him for the purpose of causing the Pearea of his ‘victims to be consumed and de- stroyed. A Tew motive for the murder—that of revenge— was disclosed by the evidence of a young lady who resides in the vicinity, and to whom Gordon had been paying attention. She had recently received anonymous letters traducing his character, the authorship of which he (Gordon) imputed to his sister-in-law. A few days before the murders were committed he threatened to be “even with her,” 80 expressed, or in words to that effect. It was also proved that on Saturday evening previous to the murders he remarked to his cousin, a young man, ‘I know one thing—Almond’s Ife or mine is d—d short in this world,’ The prisoner heard the result of the inquest with- ont emotion. His examination is expected to take place before a police justice on Wednesday. THE KELLOGG SHOOTING CASE, Melvin M. Cohen and Charles R. In a letter to Dr. Harris, of the Health Board, on the subject, Dr. Wilson says:—"The cause of fright producing convulsions in the child I at- tribute to an unknown man taking hold of her and taking improper liberties with his hands, as stated ss to me by the parents and friends, who said she told them of it shortly after | its occurrence. There were slight signs of bydrophobia, but excluded that disease for the lack of essential symp‘oms.”’ Dr, Llarris referred the case to Coroner Kessler for farther investigation, and Deputy Coroner Leo will mate @ post-mortem examination on the body. Later in the day Coroner Kessler called at the house, and, against the wishes of the parents, Ordered the remains of their child to be sent to the Morgue, but when the driver of the dead wagon called for tie body they declined honoring the Coroner’s order, barricaded the doors against the driver, and thus retained possession of their unfor- tunate child’s remains, upon which @ medical ex- ainination will be made at the house, THE PAOIFIO RAILROAD, SAN FRANCISCO, June 23, 1873.
