IMMIGRANTS BY THE THOUSA Studies from Life at Castle Garden. Examples of Foreign Ouriosity—Specimens from the Oommon Mould of Human- ity—Men, Women and Ohildren Goming to the Land of Uncle Sam. How the Immigrants Are Received and Treated. ‘The scene in Castle Garden on Wednesday was one Of peculiar interest, The advent of 4,000 immi- grants in a sinsie day is an unusual, but not un- Precedented, occurrenc>, It is a day fraucht with much importance to the immigrants themselves. ‘The air oi: the Garden is close; the ventilation insuMcient. The «dors of the steerage render ‘the atmosphere almost intolerable. Clouds fill the air and every moment threaten rain. The whole arena, together with the balcony which surrounds the entire interior, seems filled with a struggling mass of humanity, As a HFRALD reporter walks slowly around this large tuilding he sees many ‘pictures which are worth reproducing, and whi*h make Castle Gaiden an enilecs source of amuse- Ment to a student of animated nature. Viewing the whole scene from the small balcony ‘which is reached trom the Commissioners’ office, it Seems @ strunzely moving panorama, and the vari- eties of sombre color and shade seem formed with almost kuleidoscopic diversity. There seems to be Dothing in detail to describe, and the casual ob- Server returns to the gftice with the conclusion that the immigrants are in the Garden, and will doubtiess make the best of their way to their des- tinations. Nevertheless, there are enacting many homely incidents, waich can only be singled out from among a crowd such as this by a careful tour of observation throngn the Garden, The reporter prefers to make l.8 journey alone, He who can be ‘an acute observer without making known his iden- tity can alone ho, e to see things as they really are. SOME PICTURES OF HUMANITY. Near the centre of th: arena stand five young men, with tneir bundies in their hands, They are on the point o: separating. Two go to the Saginaw region, ene to Northern Minnesota and the others to lowa. One of them tells the reporter that they were raised together in the same town in Northumberlang. Their paths, which through youth and manhood have been together, are now about to diverge in all probability forever, It ccruiny is an ip rtant day ior them, Near by 4s a German giri ceaied on a black box. This doubtless contains her entire worldly possessions and she probably awaits triends, Two small boys are sitting beside a roll of bedding and a heap of cooking utensils. The smaller, a lad of eight, looks as if he wanted to cry very badly, but was afraid of his big brother. These children are doubtless awaiting the return of relatives who have gone to some other part of the building in quest of in- formation. Not far away sits a middle-aged, Smaciated woman, whose face plainly telis that she is a victim of the dire disease, consumptien. Child- Jess and alone, we hud her on the steps which lead ‘tothe parquet, ‘he tirst and almost involuntary question 1s adiressed to her. She 1s asked if she -Swaits the coming friends, Either suspicion or ‘uniamiliarity witv the language closes her lips. Ahe is perhaps airaid of the American people, and is revoiving in her mind ali sorts of terribie stories which have reached her at home about America, COME TO AMERICA TO DIR. Leaving her, an «ld lady is seen to the right, who ia evidently unused to lorming a part of such a Tustic picture. ‘The regular features ot her face and the serenity wit which she regards the scenes passing around stamp her as an Englishwoman, The Meat immaculately white cap and the large putfo. ray hair, which, as it were, iormaframe for her lace, denoie some degree of refinement. What could have brought her to leave her native land at this time oi life? Certainly not want; assuredly neither affluence nor pleasure. Inquiry establisties the fact that it was love tor a son, Who many years ago came here and who is her sole comiort.” She ‘has sent for him and sae expects him momentarily. “She has come to America to end her days with her only child. Is not this an important day for her? She crossed in company with a family who sit near at hand; but, as il to seciude herself somewhat, in -order that she may give full vent to her joy at “the meeting which she so longingly anticipates, she has moved apart from them, TRISH PEASANT LIFE. Here are two young eouples belonging to the bet- ter class of irish peasantry. The girls are dressed in bright colored "plaids, with paniers and all the follies of fasnion. The hats are oi st . question- able, it is true, as to size or shape, trimmed with an extrav: ve Ol flowers, leaves, buds, iruit and : hg ere is a young mother only a few feet dis- She is scarcely eigsteen, aud is apparently anxious toencounier and vattle with the possi- bilities of free America. She is neither handsome nor elegantly dressed. Evidently belonging to the poorer class, she has been used to a lifelong strug- gle wre with poverty. She is very proud of the cluld, er only Offspring, The smiie on her face is to be -Roticed as she alternately looks upon the little mite of humanity at her breast and then upon the strange, intolerable babble whieh surrounds her. Just as proud -and happy is she as the most contented gir! on the avenue. joughtless little creature ! She smues to her father, a buriy Irissman, with all the joy ot ‘awakened iniant pride. Sandwiches, whieh would do honor toa bee: garden on the Bowery, are deait out to smali and large among a lamily ol seven children. “RUNNING THE GAUNTLET.” ‘The bell at tie top oi the balcony rings violently. Another steamer us come up. The immigrants, as they arrive, are to come in by the gate leading from the wuari. The registering clerk mounts his desk. The teller, Who checks off each name as he calis it from the steame:’s list, leaps upon the loitiest rostrum. We are to have "Vanity Fair,” and the curtain is rung up! The gate Swings open and the strangely assortea cargo of humanity comes struggling and straggling into the rotunda. The leader is a burly Swede, who passes ay forward to the registering desk, carrying & andie ef bedding on his shoulder and a struggling child Whose xex it is impessisle even to guess, ander his arm. He enters the narrow pas- sageway with fear manitested on every lineament of his tace. He 1s evidently afraid tuat he may get fast. Seeing the possibility of a jam, the Swede, by xterous Movemen’, places the child on the top ef the pack on his shotider. Next comes his wile. The more than feminine efforts which she makes to keep her piace next to her liege lord are laughable. She “heads of’ a couple of yeung Irishmen who Were avout to slip in between, and talites her Bame second on the list, Aiter a number ef SILENT, UNCHARACTERISTIC PEOPLE, ‘who pass slowly along without creating any sensa- tion, comes a fine, old-looking Scotchman, He ‘Walks the door as il it were the quarterdeck of a man-ol-war. As he comes out the reporter learns, on inquiry, that he was in the East India merchant service, and sailed between Dundee and Bombay, Next come more women with children—women with voices weak as air and others who give their Dames in a voice clearly audible above the korrible din. Young men struggle to the front with all their rtable effects enclosed {n a red silk handkerchiel, ore small boys, following overburdened men and ‘women, Women with care and anxiety written in their faces—men inured to toi) and exposure and ignorant as to the existence of the eight hour stat- ute. The eat- grant evidently thinks that tue clerk erk should know his name if he knowy what duty is, In this in- stance the reply ts, “My name 1s 10 your book.” For a lew moments the officials are besieged with such inquiries as, “Where can I raise my ticket to Scranton? “How long wi'l they keep us here 1" “When will we get our luggage!’ “Where dol take the boat for ‘Troy t” “What is the price of a ticket to Mudsock :” “I want to give you my name; wiil you take it?” “Can't we get offto night?” “Was my name called?’ and a thoasand similar questions, which no one but an immigrant could possibly remember, WHY NOT ABOLISH THIS? The plates of the “Liber Studorium” alone brought about $100,000, A set of them comprised 71 plates, and they brought from $1,600 to $4,000 each set. DOUGLAS JERROLD’s Son, in a brief preface to a new edition of “Mrs, Caudie’s Curtain Lectures,” telis us that hee jo.ed both literary and pecuniary success for the last twelve years of his life, though he had ‘forty years as hard fighting as ever man who took up literature as his profession could do,’" Logp HouGnron’s ‘*Monographs, Personal and Social,’ will contain side allusions and interesting facts about almost everybody of note in England.
