Consols and United States Securities Lower in London, and Fresh Apprehension of an Advance in the Bank Rate. Foreign Exchange Firmer and Money More Active. On Change to-day cotton was quiet and easier for “spot” lots, while “futures” were }¢¢, per Ib. better. Flour was in demand and firm. Wheat ‘was also firm, while corn was decidedly lower and ‘attracted considerable business at the decline, COMPARISON OF THE EXPORTS, The total exports of domestic merchandise from New York to foreign ports for the week ending May 13, and since the beginning of the year, com- BE ee no. The news from Austria and Germany was without further elaboration as to the results of the recent panic on the Bourse at Vienna, although the proposed suspension of the Austro-Hungarian Bank act is regarded as an in- dication of @ more critical situation than has been reported through the telegrams to the American presse. Very naturally, the course of ERIE IN LONDON ‘was closely watched, as affording a key not only to the monetary situation there, but as a reflex of the public opinion with reference to the American management of the stock. The price broke down to 4634, and some private despatches say as low as 86%, the price after some considerable fuctuation closing at 463;. United States bonds have been heavy and wind up with a slight decline, the new Mves having been exceptionally firm. THE BANK OF ENGLAND gained on balances to-day £89,000, or within a trifle of the amount withdrawn yesterday. ‘This fact failed, however, to counteract in its influence on prices the active demand at bank for discounts. The new French loan was without change in quo- tation, but rentes in Paris late in the afternoon fell Off to 54.57. MONEY IN BETTER DEMAND. The money market was more active, but to some extent unsettled. The early dealings were at 7 per cent and ata decline to 6 per cent. In the afternoon, concurrent with the shifting of loans incident to the “break” in the Pacific Mail, a more active inquiry set in at 7, which remained the rate ‘Up to the ciose of business, with a few transactions tas high as 7 gold (equivalent to about 8% per cent). Mercantile paper was unchanged, prime names being quoted 7 a 10 per cent discount. The outstanding legal tenders to-day are $356,841,000, @ decrease since yesterday of $183,000. The green- back circulation, according to these figures, is lower than it has been at any time since last October. It will be seen by our Albany despatches that the Dsury bill has been defeated. ADVANCE IN FOREIGN PXCHANGE. The foreign exchange market was firmer as a consequence of the unsettled condition of the Eu- ropean money markets, and the rates for sterling were advanced 44, to 1087 for prime sixty day bills and 110 for sight. The following shows the new standard of rates :—Sterling, sixty days, com- mercial, 108 a 1083¢; do., good to prime bankers’, 108% & 108%; do., short sight, 1097; a 110; Paris, sixty days, 5.28% a 5.23%; do., short sight, 5.20 a 6.18%; Prussian thalers, 71}; a 72:4; Antwerp, 6.28% @ 5.2234; Switzerland, 5.2744 a 5.22%; Ham- burg, 95% 296%; Amsterdam, 99% a 40%; Frank- Sort, 40% a 4134; Bremen, 9514 a 9614. GOLD FIRMER—1175; A 118, The gold market was unsettled, with a narrow range of fluctuations, the extremes having been 117% a 118, The early temper was “bullish,” as the result of the continued unfavorable advices from the other side; but the gain in the specie of the Bank of England and the deferment of any imerease in the bank rate led to a decline te 117%. ‘This was the exceptional extreme, or the lower side, and was just touched for a moment, the market rallying to,118 on the subsequent harden- ing of foreign exchange. The advance brought out ® great deal of “long” gold, and the condition of the loan market showed that a great deal of “iong” gold had been sold the previous day. The European steamers took out $206,630 in silver bars. The Sub-Treasury paid out $272,000 on account of inter- est. The course of the market is shown in the fol- 111% 1% 1173 lis 1P.M. 2 MM. nm% WX a NIK In the gold loan market the rates ranged from “ to 7 per cent for carrying. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as tollows:— THE RAILROAD BONDS. ‘The railroad bonds were dull and steady. While the amount of business in the general stock market was of the usual and moderate ex- tent, Pacific Mail became actively weak and ex- perienced a break of 534 per cent, taking the ex- tremes of the day, which were respectively 52 and 463. In explanation of this sudden and serious decline it was at first stated that the long mooted rival British steamship line across the Pacific, between Hong Kong and San Francisco, had become a reality, and that one of the steamers, the Altoona, as announced in the HERALD of this morning, had arrived at San Francisco. Subse- quently it was asserted that the steamer in ques- tion had been simply chartered at Hong Kong to take a cargo from San Francisco, and on her way across had brought a load of Chinese laborers des- tined for America. Otherwise the fall in the stock was ascribed to the sales by @ “pool”? who had sought to oust the present régeme, but finding that it would be impossibic to secure @ majority of the stock before next Monday, abandoned the effort and sold out their stock. Official notice 1s given by the Pacific Mall Company that the annual election jor nine directors will take place on Wednesday, May 28, between the hours of twelve M. and two P.M., and that the transfer books will close May 19 and remain closed until May 29. The weakness in Pacific Mail dragged down the general market, especially as the disap- pointment of the street at the absence of the “bull” market, which was expected to follow the relaxation in money has encouraged a bearish sentiment in the street at large, some little help being furnished the efforts of the “bears” this afternoon in the better demand for money above noted. The lack of confidence is also attributable to the apprehensions begotten by the recent de- velopment of monetary troubles in Eurepe. Alter Pacific Mail the more important decline was in C. ©. and I. C., St. Paul, Union Pacific and Ohios, which went off 1a 13g per cent, the decline else- where barely exceeding one-half per cent. A closing rally of 1 @ 13; per cent from the lowest price of Pacitic Mail induced @ general reaction of irreg- ular extent in the general list. Western Union Tel- egraph was exceptionally firm. Erie, all things considered and particularly the tenor of its London quotations, was comparatively steady. In the my- cellancous list Panama sold down to 110, in sympa- thy with the decline in Pacific Mail, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. WEDNESDAY, May 4—6 P. M. There was only @ moderate trade movement to- day, either on or off Change, and values as aruie were much the same, though there were a few notable exceptions. Cotton was still dull and heavy, quotations being to a great extent nominai. At the Produce Exchange there was not much change in the markets as compared with yesterday. Flour was steady under a moderate demand, Wheat was steady, with a fair demand for prime Spring on the spot and to arrive. Oats were dull, but not essentially changed. Whiskey was easy, Pork was very quiet, but held firm. Lard was easier aud not very active. In the grocery market coffee attracted considerable attention, but other articles generally were quict. Petroleum remained quiet and unchanged. Sale of the Famous Tweed Property, Broadway and Twenty-first Street— Original Cost, $600,000; Amount Reai- ized Yesterday, $483,500—The Prices Ob- tained No Criterion of Present Values. That the Ring is dead beyond resurrection was ampiy vestified yesterday at the public sale, by which property purchased for the ex-Boss, William Marcy Tweed, in the heyday of the “close circle reign,” was Knocked down to the highest bidder, Belore stating the result of the sale, it will not be amiss to give a little history of the original pur- chase and description of this now famous property, On the 18th day of January, 1871, Adrian H. Mul- ler offerea at public vendue, by order of the Su- preme Court, valuable improved property, located on Broadway, northeast corner of Twenty-iirst street, on Fourth avenue, Canal, Laurens and Wooster streets, iu partition between Henry A, Cram and others against James Watson Webb and others, under releree’s direction, The very first plot offered, consisting of five lots fronting on Broadway, was purchased by Benjamin F. Fairchild for and on. account of Boss Tweed for $000,000, The ten per cent pur- chase money was paid, as well as the re- quired additional thirty per cent, and ae the balance “remained on bond and mortage, which, however, Was never patd, Suit was ent therefor and a judgment o foreclosure rendered from the judi unal. The property was duly avertised to be sold two weeks ago, but by consent ¢ the referee, Mr. George DeForest Lord, the sale a8 postponed until yesterday, with the promise Thaete Should be peremptory. At the first an- nouncement but very few few poopie attended, evng b a rumor having bee! ted that “the sale of this property was put up job,’ and gotten up for the express purpose Agate a clear title, and that Tweed could east he $300,000 mort- gage resting thereon, if reais felt disposed 80 to do,’ On Tuesday, however, an Le a be made for a further = of proceed! give tha eX-Boss time to raise the require: cam of money, for which he was then in negotiation, being denied, It became evident that the order’ of the Court commanding the disposal of the estate was in earnest, and, in consequence, a very numerous and weal! thy assemblage thronged the Exchange Salesroom yesterday. Other sales besides rt were SaNexaaed among, vhem the Walter Roche prope y-to indemnify the Guardian Savings jank Lisi but the stand of Muller, Wilkins & Co. seemed to be the chief point of attraction. After reading the order of the Court and the terms of sale, Mr. Muller solicited a bid to start on. The first lot offered was No. 922 Broadway, north- east corner. of Twenty-first strect, 1X96,9%21.8X 102.3, having a five story and basement brick build- ing thereon, This property was started at $75,000. The bidding increased by easy stages until it reached $120,000, when itiagged. A spasmodic effort part of ‘the veteran auctioneer, however, ‘on the 500, at which figure the increased the price to $12 house and lot was knocked down as sold. On call- ing for the name of the purchaser, a gentle- man repiied “J, H, Mahoney.” It trans- pired that he bought for Amos R. Eno, Tie original price paid for this property. was $136,000. The next plot, 924 Broadway, 19.11x- 102.3X19.4X107.8, Was started at $55,000, and was knocked down ‘to John Lawrence for $90,500, and 926 adjoining, 19.11X113,1x19.4x107.8, for the same price to the same purchaser, The original cost of these two plots was $110,000 each, 928 Broadway, 20X118.6N19.4X113.1, was started at $75,000 and knocked down to William Eddleston for $87,000— first cost $119,500, and 930 adjoining, 20.1x123.11x- 19.4X118.6, was purchased by Mr, Eddieston for $93,000 (original cost $124,500). Mr, William Ed- dleston being the law partner of Willtam M. Tweed, Jr., it is generally premumed that his purchase was for the benetit of the family. It will turther be seen that the sum total realized for this valuable property was $483,500, and the amount paid therefor, January 18, 1871, $600,000, thus showing a loss of $116,500, The prices ob- tained for this property do by no means indteate that there 1s any decline in eligible real estate, especially In such a locality as Broudway and Twenty-lirst street. In the first place these hee houses were bought on a hurrab, aud upon the catculation that Madison avenue was to be ex- tended southward, in which event there would be another front added to the houses, and the por- tion cut from the lots to establish the new avenue would be paid for by the city so liberally as to re- dace the originé’ cost to a mere trifle, be- sides leaving full lots doubly enhanced in value. But as the “best laid plans of mice and men aft gang agiee.” so was this fine speculation knocked into “smithereens,” and the failing experiment has cost the operator the snug sum of $116,500. Under the Ring rule money was of no object to the coterie of which it was com- posed, aud whatever suited their fancy was pur- chased, no matter now much the cost. Therefore, the first price ald jor this property cannot be taken asa standard of its value, nor can it be aad- judged as being worth only the sum realized yes- terday, on account of the peculiar circumstances under which it has been sold, Another one of the “Ring relics” was disposed of yesterday, consisting of real estate belonging once to Waiter Roche, but which was placed under the tinea: of Messrs. Quinlan, Lynch and Deve- iin for the victims in the Guardian Savings Insti- tution, the particulars of which will be Jound in the real estate column.
