FINANCLAL, AND COMMERCIAL The,Mishaps and Misfortunes Wich “Have Pursued Stock Speculation ——~1——— Tight Money, Defaulting Cashers and Broken Banks. PACIFIC MAIL A FINANCIAL JONAH. The Money Market for the Memorable Month of April, 1878, —+—— ATURDAY'S BANK STATEMENT. WALL STREET, Sunpay, May 4, isi.} ‘The career of the stock market the past week, and in fact for a series of weeks, has been anything Dut remunerative to the OPERATORS FOR A RISB, From day to day the most rational caleulations of a better wtate ef affairs have been defeated by some mishap Or accident as mischievous as unex- pected, The market hag beem like those unlucky people whom everybody's experience ts more or Jeas familiar with in everyday life. No matter what opportunities are afforded, no matter what help is given them, they are always breaking down and getting in trouble. The stock market ought ong ago to have been in the smooth water of easy money and sailing on the buoyant tide of THE SPRING RISE. But something kept turning up. In the first place, the money was bloeked in the remote inte- tior of the Western States, and withheld for nearly two months beyond the usual time, Then, when it began to reach us the cliques locked it up or sorted out the greenbacks and sent them out of town, and 80 kept the banks a good deal poorer than poverty. Then the cashier of the Atlantic Bank defaulted and the bank broke, and every depositor in the city began to tear every other cashier would de- fault and every other bank would break. A small run on the Continental and Manufacturers and Merchants’ Banks was the consequence of this APPREHENSION, the public mind being assured only when the Clearing House nad passed wpon the solvency of the banks last mentioned, and declared them in good standing. With this matter settled it was thonght the situation wasall right. As the poet has told us, man isn’t, but always isto be blest. By Friday the money market had settled to com- Parative ease, and the Spring rise seemed at hand this time, a sure thing and no mistake. But alas for the trusting faith of the bovine herd, the wag- ging tongue of scandal began to make free with the fair name of several of the biggest nouses on the street, “for whom could you believe sound after the fatlure of Barton & Allen?” Rumor even Went 80 far as to say that COMMODORE VANDERBILT had fathered the dificulties of one of the half dozen or more “Vanderbilt houses,” and, acting less im- Partially than in the Barton & Allen case, had opened his purse strings and loaned his posterity a million or two of dollars to help them out of their troubles. To cap the climax, on the last day of the week the street, with a Paul Pry mischievous shrewdness, scented out the alleged embarrass- ment or Mr. Stockwell, a heavy operator in Pacific Mail, and, watching his movements as closely as though they were his credivors, jumped to the con- clusion that be had failed. Something of this re- sult had been anticipated early in the week, ac- counting for the weakness in PACIFIC MAIL, the price of which declined about 214 per cent up to Friday night, and fell 6 per cent more during tre excitement on Saturday, occasioned by the reported failure of the party referred to. In the semi-panic following this tumble and the ramors of impending bankruptcy in the case of severai | Prominent brokerage firms, the market declined | quite seriously, touching, by the one o'clock Board | | 01 Saturday, the lowest prices of the week. The greatest fall, as stated, was in Pacific Mail, which went down 8}, per cent to 49%. The next greatest ‘was in C. C. and I. C., which fell 6 per cent to 32%. Union Pacific and Ohios went off about 4 per cent, and Ohios 3 per cent. The other fuctuations were confined within a range of 1 a 2 per cent. WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPE being exceptionaily strong and rising to 86%. The publication of the bank statement, with its excel- lent showing, checked the decline, and a later re- Jaxation in money caused a reversal of the course of the market, which assumed considerable strength in the last few minutes of business, the rally being helped by a rumor that Messrs. Horace F. Clark and Jay Gould had agreed to assist Mr, Stockwell out of his diMculties. ment was the real secret of the reaction, however, as it promises an immediate future of easy money. The rate on call during the week ranged as high as 34 per cent a day, but declined to as low as 5 per cent per annum, both being abnormal EXTREMES. It would be hard, however, to say what the average was. The month of April was the most stringent in the history of Wail street. The rate on cal) for the thirty days, according to calculations made by several brokerage firms, averaged about | 434 per cent, or about 54 per cent per annum. Comifercidi paper Was nominal at 9a 12 per cent discount. Gold weS Weaker under the disburse- ments on accountof May interest, and declined from 117% to 116%, 4 feaction to the opening point being occasioned ir the middle of the week by a decline in London pjices, the result, in turn, of ap- | prehensions of civi Ws in France. The weekly statement of the associated banks is the most favorable in several months, the gain in resources having beem large enough mot only to take the reserve across the line, but to create nearly three millions of a surplus, the latter luxury being quite a novelty. The increase in deposits begins at length to reflect the heavy receipts of currency from the interior, but without as yet doing full justice to their abundance, The gain in specie—showing the payment of the May inter- est on the public debt—and in legal tenders is about five millions. The banks have been so much encouraged by their acquisition of strength as to enlarge their loans about a million and a half, The statement compares with its predecessor of last April 26. May 3. + $269,301,900 $270,721, 100 15,989,700 8,677,800 27,737, 700 564,400 185,220,600 il, 900 37,690,600 40,051,700 bah changes’ being in detail as follows:- Increase in loans. 1,419, 200 Increase in specie. 2,658,100 Decrease in circula' 173,300 Increase in deposits. 8,251,300 Increase in legal tenders....... + 2,361,100 AN ANALYSIS of the above figures shows that the banks now hold $2,720,425 in excess of the legal reserve, against a deficiency last week of $309,275, making @ gain of $3,029,700. This result is seen in detail in the following comparison showing the relation be- tween the total reserve and the total liabilities this week and last:— STOCKS ON SATURDAY. SaTurpAy, May 3—6 P, M. The trade movement last week was somewhat retarded by the growing stringency in the money market, and the result was seen in & considerably duuinished volume of commercial transactions. ‘There were no longer any fears of a commercial crisis, but it was simply impossible to carry through mercantile enterprises calling fer a liberal expenditure ef money, while money was so scarce and rates of interest so high and so constantly fluctuating that the rates current one day afforded no criterion for the next. So commercial interests had to be subordinated to those of the speculators and manipulators of the money and stock markets, All things considered, however, & fine business was consummated in most of the leading commodities, The export movement in breadstuf™ was very moder- ate, yet there was more business on foreign ac- count from day to day, though generally at prices favoring the shipper rather than the seller. There Were scarcely any speculative ventures and very deal in contracts, though some purchases were made on a lower basis than sellers were previously prepared to entertain. The movement in provi- sions—lately 80 active—was comparatively siow | wanted to some extent, especially by steamers, | and, the offerings having been light, rates have | deciined.
