One Hundred Unfortunate Be- ings Swallowed Up in the Waters. Forty-One Dead Bodios Recovored Up to 6 0'Clock Last Evening. Many Supposed to Have Been Carried Away by the Current. | A Large Kumber Badly Injured by the Falling Wreck, 3 Heartrending Soenes on the River-Bank «--List of the Viotims, Speetal Dispateh to The Chicago Tribune, Dixon, May 4.—A torriblo catastrophe hap- pened hore this aftornoon, noarly fifty porsons boing drowned and twonty or thirty injured, somo of thom soriously. A rovival was rocontly commenced in the Baptist Church, Rev. J. H, Pratt, pastor, and quite a number of persons havo beon converted. This afternoon was fixed upon for baptizing sbout & dozon men and ‘women, and, as usual in the country, s large con- course of people assembled to witness the im- mersion. They collectod on tho right bank of tho Rock River, at tho foot of Main streot, but many, dosiring » bottor place to seo, went npon the bridgo, about fifty foot to the left of where the converts woro to entor tho water. This bridge was of the Truesdell pattern, construct- ed of iron and supported by olght plors, It was nbout five hundrod and fifty feet long, and thought capablo of sustain- ipg any ordlnary weight. Over 200 people wore crowded upon it at 1 o'clock, and tho Rov. Ar. Pratt was sbout commencing the sorvices when ono entire span (that noarest tho shore) seventy feot in longth, foll into the river. The wator at this point is about five fect decp, and tho current vory ropid. When the mass of humanity was procipltated into tho water the greatost confu- sfon followed. Thoso on shore wero almost par- nlyzod, and incapablo of exertion for soveral minutes, Gradually they rocovered their pres- once of mind, and ran down to the water's edgor and resoued all thoy could. Tho 200 men, womon, ond children who wore on the bridgo foll sbout twenty feot, and many were buried, and . nover ross to the eur- foco alive, The bottom is compoged of rook, agd honce manyaro supposed to haye beon killod by coming in contact with its snrface. Those in tho water woro unable to assist ono snother. Thoy groanod-éud called for help, but foar had such control of the majority that thoy made no offort to got sshore. The current swopt many away, and many persons, could be soen floating down the stream. Beveral men thought only of thoir own safety, and ewam to tho bauk. Boats wore prooured and the rescuo of those who wero alive was commenced, Ovor a hundred were pulled out, some by tho hair and others by tho limbs, and were landed as soon ns possible, Most of tho women fainted, but their frionds nessted in thoir resuecitation. Many were insonsiblo whon taken ashore, having swallowed much wator. Theso were brought to by various processes, and noarly all wererosusci- tated. A fow, howover, conld not be rovived. ‘When %o moroe persons wero observed struggling in the water, therecovery of tho drowned was commonced. Body after body was taken out, many being cut andbruised by the timbers and iron‘work of tho bridge. Thoy were Inid on tho bank, hore and thero half a dozen, and o few foet distant & dozon more. Friends and rola- tives of the missing gathorod aroundthe corpsos, and, aa ono aftor snother was idontified, thero waa wooping and groaulng. THE GENE ON THE SHORE is indescribable. Methors pressed their dead babes to their breasts; husbands wero slmost bo- side thomselvos at the loss of thoir wives; lovors were wild, ono or the othor in many instances baving found a watery grave. Up to 6 o'clock FOBTY-ONE DODIES had been recovered. It is belloved that fittoen or twenty more porsons were carried away by tho ourrent, aa fully the largor numbor are miss- ing. THE NEWS OF THE CATASTROPHE epread through the town with rapidity, snd noarly every citizen hastoned to the river bank to rendor all tho assistance in thoir power, At dark the bodies were removed to the Baptist church and privato houses. Those of persons 'who lived in Dixon wero talen to tho houses of their relatives. Many of the drowned lived in nelghboring towns, and their bodies will romain horo until to-morrow morning. & The telegraph office was-full of [people all tho aftornoon, who Were sonding dispatches to frionds and relatives containing intolligonco of the disaster, and informing them that ‘‘ mothor is dead,” “father is hurt,” or ¢ sistor is drowned.” The nows will mako sad manya ‘boart in this part of tho Stato, INCIDENTS. 1 would be impossiblo, in tho excitement and confision of the bour, to make propor mention of all tie intorosting incldents and miraculous esoapon whioh followed the frightful disastor.
