Die Parijer Weltausftellung von 1855 fand mitten imter den Kampfer des Krim- trieges ftatt. Ueber der Londoner Ausftellung lagerte bereits eine fehr fiihlbar gewordene SdHrwiile und die Spannung in der deutidjer Frage, und vollends die Parifer Ausftellung von 1867 war faum etwas mehr als ein eben fo biafjer wie greller Friedensfonnen- ftcaht swijdjen drohenden SriegSiwolfen, Bon einer foldjen Situation ift diesmal Rede. A despatch from Vienna to the Daily News says the Emperor of Austria gave a grand banquet last night at the Palace. Among the guests were all the native and foreign Princes now in Vienna, and Hon, John Jay, the United States Minister. The newly-appointed American Commissioners are actively working to get the department of the Exposition assigned to the United States in com- plete order at an early day. Kach of these correspondents telegraph their accounts to the HERALD, and this morning that paper appears with their reports to full, Auerbach’s and Mithibach’s being in German, fae HERALD has displayed more than ordinary sagacity in this undertaking, and the faithful and excellent manner in which its arrange- ments have been carried out, as well as the’ re- markable promptness exhibited in giving its news to the public, will stand as one of the greatest achievements in journalism. Whatever else par- ties may say of the HeRaxp, it cannot be denied that it has proven itself the greatest newspaper of the age. Average tem| last year.. Average tem THE CHICKASAW RACES. Closing Day of the Chickasaw Jockey Club Races—Six Events and Good Rac- ing—Captain Hutchinson, Joe Johnson and Port Leonard the Winners. MEMPHIS, May 3, 1873. The Chickasaw Jackey Club races closed to-day with fine weather, a good track and large attend- ance, The first race wasa hurdle handicap, one mile and a half, over six hurdles, for a purse of $350, of which $50 was given to the second horse. Three horses started. The race was won by Cap- tain Hutchinson; Jeggler second and Solon Shingle third. Time 3:01. Hutchinson was the favorite against the fleld and won by a length with ease. The second race was the Chickasaw Stake, for three-year-olds ; a subscription of $50, p. p., with $400 added; seventy subscribers, Four horses started. ‘The race was won by Joe Johnson, beating Jack Frost, Frank Bonnabel and Durboyne, in the order named, Time, 3:46. This was the most exciting race of the week. Jack Frost was the favor- ite in the pools, and before the start money was laid in large amounts upon him at two to ome against the fleld. The colts got a good start, Frank Bonnabel in the lead and Joe Johnson bringing up in the rear for three- quarters of a mile, wnen Frost moved to the front, closely followed by the other three, all passing the stand in a bunch, Frost slightly in the lead, John- son fourth. In going up the backstretch Johnson made a play for the front and each horse in succession, and at pole challenged —_ Frost. From that point they ran locked to the four mile dis- tance, where Johnson forged ahead, and drawing eee away passed the stand first by a length, oth Johnson and Frost under whip and spur; Bonnabei third and Durbeyne beaten off.. THE VERMONT CENTRAL. Evidence Taken Before the Legislative Committee in the Alleged “C. M.” Op- erations—Governor Smith Exonerated.j St. ALBANS, Vt., May 3, 1873, The committee appointed by the Legislature on the charges of peculation, fraud and improper in- fluences to procure legislation for the Vermont Central Railread have been in session during the week. They have made a thorough and searching investigation of all the books ef the company con- taining the accounts of the trustees. They have been assisted by the trustees, who have preduced with the greatest willingness every paper, voucher, ledger, journal and account called for, and have also had the assistance of Mr. Williams, formerly the assistant treasurer, and of @ squad of clerks. The investigation extended over all the years of Governor Smith’s connection with the trust. Every item was explained; the balances were found to be sometimes in favor and sometimes against the trustees. There was found to be no discrepancy whatever between the vouchers and the accounts; everything Is clear and regular and there is not one particle of evidence of peculation or fraud. The chief clerk of the shop testified that all material taken by Governor Smith or W. C. Smith was reguiarly charged. The master of trans- tation testified that all freight sent or received yy them Was charged at full rates. It was shown from the books that the drafts charged to the ac- count of the Northern Pacific Railroad had been accounted for in a regular manner tn Governor Smith’s account with the Trust. WHAT MAY BE MADE OF ERIE, He anys that the Eric Railway can be made the most important of all the existing lines of internal communication in America, $35,000,000 mv SEMI-ANNUAL DIVIDENDS. He further says that it can earn $40,000,000 annually, of which $35,000,000 will be net. These net earnings shall be henceforth divided into semi-annual dividends. EFFECT ON THE BRITISH SPECULATORS. The letter already increases the great confi- dence felt in the present administration. THE OCEAN CABLES. —_—_—+___.- Preparations for Laying and Repairing Lines of Ocean Wires, ——_+__— Two New Atlantic Cables To Be Put Down and Four To Be in Working Order by September 1. TELEGRAM TO THE NEW YORK HERALD. “Lonpox, May 3, 1873. The steamer Hibernian leaves on Monday, the Sth inst., to repair the French cable. The Great Eastern and Edinburgh leave the latter part of this month to lay the cable from Valentia to Heart's Content. The Great Bastern will then return to repair the broken Anglo- American cable, and the Edinburgh will proceed to lay two new cables between Placentia, Newfound- land, and Sydney, Cape Breton. It is expected that four cables will be working across the Atlantic and five across the Gulf of St, Lawrence before the 1st of September.
