FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Relaxation .in Money Making Progress. The Rate on Call Ranges from 18 Down to6 Per Cent. CONTENUED BUOYANCY IN STOCKS. Pacifle, Mail Rises to, 61 and Western Union Turns the Corner of 87. -MONEY:-IN LONDON 2: PER CENT. A Farther Advance in Foreign Exchange and Government Bonds Rampant, A Gain of a Million Reserve in the Bank Statement. WALD STREET, ‘w} Sarorpay, April 19-6 P.M. @n 'Ohange to-day cotton was quiet, with prices Fallng steady. Receipts at the porte, 4,975 bales. Flour continued dull gud heavy. Wheat was quiet and not essentially changed in price, while corn was in better demand and drmer. : THB IMPORTS OF THE WEEE. ‘The total imports of foreign merchandise at the port of New York trom foreign perts during the past week were $12,346,614, made up of $3,300,000 of ary goods and $9,045,615 of general merchandise. TUB COTTON MOVEMENT. ‘The tote) receipts of cotton at all the ports for the past week were 65,830 bales, against. 48,945 bales the previous week, Making the total receipts since September, 1, 1872, 3,163,688 bales,’ agammst 2,638,175 bales last year—an increase in the present crop of 626,463 bales. The exports from: all the ports during the week were 89,409 bales, against 62,854 bales for the same period last year. The total exports for the expired portion of the cotton year are 2,044,793 bales, against 1,720,737 bales last year. ‘The atock at all the ports is 457,407 bales, against 306,002 bales in 1872. THE FOREIGN MARKET. Cable despatches announce that the steamer Scotia has sailed from Liverpool with the half mil- Nien, of sovereigns which was packed at the Bank ef England yesterday, as reported by our London eerrespondent. ‘To-day’s advices from the London Market do not justify the apprehensions that this shipment would lead to a higher bank rate, for money is quoted as lending at 2 per cent upon con- sos, London quotations have been generally steady except for the new fives, which declined X, but became active and recovered %. The new French loan has advanced toa premium of 63¢ per cent, and Eries have risen to 51% a 62. MONEY Easy. ‘The money market was easy—at least as con- trasted with itself in the eventful past few weeks— and loans op call were made at 1-16 and interest dewn to 6 per cent, the last rate prevailing at 98. early as @ quarter before three o'clock. The Digheat rate of the day in the way of turning stocks wae 3s per cent, or rather that was the difference eerly in the forenoon between cash and regular prices. Ag the bonus of 1-16, the highest rate in actual loans, was for the two days to Monday, it (was really equivalent to only 1-32aday. In other werds. THE HIGHEST RATE for money was equivalent to about 18 per cent perannum. Foreign exchange was strong, with @B unusually active demand for Saturday, and the Fates for prime sterling advanced to 107% @ 108 fer eixty day and 108% a 108% jor sight bills. These Ggures will doubtiess help to reassure the London moncy market. From Washington we learn that the outstanding extra greenbacks this evening are $2,117,000—a decrease since yesterday of $75,000, The Treasury balances are $35,000,000 currency amd $72,200,000 coin, the latter being represented to the extent of $22,500,000 by outstanding certificates, The relaxation in money started the note brokers looking into their pigeon-holes, and, if continued @ext week, we shall probably see a revival of activity in discounts. THE BANK STATEMENT, ‘The weekly statement of the associated banks ts favorable and shows that the deficiency in re- serve has been so much further reduced that the banks are now below the linei only about a million @ollars, But the return is still mysterious in its failure a second time to reflect the undoubted Reavy receipts of currency irom the interior, the increase in deposits being only nominal. Hqwever, there is a conspicuous gain in legaltenders, The loans show & considerable liquidation of credits, doubtiess as a result of the fall in prices during the week at the Stock Exchange and the consequent setraction ef advances upon stock collaterals. Should the Treasury decide to prepay the May in- terest without rebate on Monday morning the REINFORCEMENT OF RESERVE Gext week would bring the banks clear above theline of required legal reserve. Indeed, as the Statement is quite probably made on rapidly rising Averages they may be already in possession ef the fall twenty-five per cent. The statement cem- pares with its predecessor of last week aa fol- tows :— April 19. $270,190, Decrease in Rataen in in deporite.. 268,100 orease in legal tenders.. 1,126,000 AD analysis of these figures shows that the banks Bow hold only $983,350—iess than the reserve re- quired by law—a gain for the week of $1,041,350. In fact, the national banks really hold a surplus of pbeus $40,000, the deficiency being confined to the Btate banks in the Clearing House Association. FURTHER ADVANCE IN STOCKS. The stock market was strong despite the con- Jectures of a probable reaetion after the sharp re- covery of the day previous, and prices, after a little hesitation at the opening, advanced steadily ‘until the, second call, when a disposition to realize caused a reaction and aloss of a portion of the day’s improvement. But the satisfactory in- terpretation of the bank statement and the further relaxation in money eccasioned a iresh rise in the closing hour of business, when the highest prices of the day were reached, Western Union, which sold at 775¢ on Thureday, touching 87%.
