THE BOOK TABLE. —_—_——— It is quite possible not to find ina long list of Rew books a single volume which attracts atten- tion because of its literary perit, Mostly, even the tutes repel. For instance, who would care to read “The Hem Jock Swamp” till after somebody else had waded through it and found it good? The book is by Elsie Leigh Whittlesey ana the publisners are Claxton, Remsen & Haffelfinger, It is such & book write. are a foarte to be attracted by “Parting- onian Patchwork,” though they found “Shillaber” ‘en the title page in the biggest ef capital letters? Lee & Shepard are the publishers. The collection 4s dull and the work below mediocrity. Nor is “Bits of Talk,” though pretty enough as a title, likely to bring readers simply fer the flavor of the bits. True, it has become the fashion te praise everything H. H. writes, but these “Bits of Talk,” of which Roberts Brothers are the publishers, are exceedingly commenplace in spite of a favor which is their own and which is sometimes de- Jicious, “Rouge et Noir’ (Claxton, Remsen & HamMe- GQnger) is a title that is repulsive, even with M. Edmond About’s name on the title page, It was hardiy werth while to translate and publish it. Sometimes what would be a stupid title fora novel is an excellent one for a book which is partly ‘am essay and partly a philosophical treatise, An example of this is the work of the Rev. Fred- erick Arnold, “Turning Points in Lile,’’ published by Harper and Brothers. The book is written in a clear and manly style and is rich in suggestivengss and illustration. Abook of singular and unsuspected interest for American readers is the “Life of Demetrius Augus- tine Gallitzin, by Sarah M,. Brownson, and published by Pastel & Co., of Barclay street. The princes of the Gallitzin family have frequently turned to other pursuits than these which usually occupy the time ofthe great. It is not leng since Prince George Gallitzin, recently deceased, visited this country as a strolling musician. Three quarters of a century before Prince Demetrius Augustine Gaillitzin, who had become a Catholic priest, settled on the highest point in the Alleghany Mountains, where he founded the village of Loretto. For nearly fifty years Prince Gallitzim labored and taught among the mountains of Maryland, Vir- ginia and Pennsylvania. No more remarkable region can be found anywhere in the country. Toa great extent the people are descended either from German Protestants or Scotch and Irish Presbyte- rians, When Gallitzin went among them the first generation had not disappeared, ana their bigotry and prejudice were inflexible. Catholics were not only persecuted for their religion, but a wall ot Secial ostracism was built around them, and to be Catholic was to be “low” in Protestant eyes. According to Miss Brownson, “In Pennsylvania, especially in the neighborhood of Chambersburg, the greatest Sgnorance prevailed, accompanied, as usual, by Prejudice, bigotry and persecution,’ and at that Place at one time Mr. Brosins, a priest, was com- pelled to take refuge in the house of Mr. Michael * Stillinger trom a party of pursuing bigots, in order to save his life, Chambersburg is te-day more re- T™arkable than any other tewn in the country for « the social ostracism of Catholics. Miss Brownson’s Ddook is a valuable contribution te history as well as an excellent memorial of the life of a good man. It is seldom, however, that a book of this kind surprises us by its exceptional excellence. Generally works of great value are announced ‘and talked about months before they appear. Asarule we have read the new books of well- known writers in the magazines before they appear 4n book form. Harper's Magazine at this time contains three serials—“Old Kensington,” by Miss Thackeray; “A Bimpleton,” by Charles Reade, and “The New Mag- @alen,”’ by Wilkie Collins, Their Weekly has in course of publication “Strangers and Pilgrims,” by Miss Braddon, has just begun Lord Lytton’s last novel, “The Parisians,” and printed during the year a number of works which afterward came to asin book form. Lippincott’s Magazine for April has the first instalment of @ new novel called “gerrytoun,” by Mrs. Rebecca Harding Davis. Dr. J. G. Holland’s new story, “Arthur Bonni- castle,” has reached its ninth chapter in Scribner's Monthly. <Appleton’s Journal, the Adantic and other periodicals all have their serials. The consequence of this is that when they come to the editor's table for review they are stale crusts cemented into a whole loaf, And the books whieh reach us unheralded are either new editions of old works or books which bught never to.have been printed at all. We find a number of new editiens of books pre- viously printed among the publications of the ‘week. 3 O'Shea sends us another volume of his edition of Cardinal Wiseman's works, this one containing two dramas—‘“The Hidden Gem” and “The Witcn ! Rosenburg.” They are only valuable because they are Wiseman’s. J.B. Lippincott & Co. have republished in one volume Miss “Wide, Wide World’ Warner’s story entitled “Daisy.” From T. B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelphia, we have a very leng list:—‘‘Mysteries of the Back- woods,” by T. B. Thorpe; “Warwick Woodlands,"’ by Frank Forester; “Frank Forester’s Shooting Box,” “Western Scenes, or Life on the Prairie; “Quarter Race in Kentucky and other Sketches; “Big Bear of Arkansas and other Sketches;” “Lou- isiana Swamp Doctor,” by Madison Tensas, M. D.; “New Orleans Sketch Book,” “Quomdon Hounds: , Sketches of English ¥ox Hunting,” by Frank For, ester; “Captain Simon Snuggs,"’ “Stray Subjects," “Charcoal Sketches: Life Scenes in a Metropolis,” by Joseph C. Neal; Frank Forester’s “Deer Staik- ers,’ “Major Jones’ Chronicles of Pineville ;" “Major Jones’ Sketches of Travel,” “Pickings from the Portiolio of the Reporter of the New Orleans Pica yune.” We begin to suspect that “new editions” fre- quently mean dull sales instead ef a great demand. And sometimes books come to hand so long after ‘@xclr publication that.we can. only look upon them ae 17; Need of a little generous or ungenerous criti- cism, One of these is “Pay Day at Babel,” by Robert R, Rodney, United States Navy, publishd by D. Van Nostrand & Co. St is avery tittle book. It is in ,@ramatic form, ands most wretched example of Mterary imbecility. Then eome the customary announcements. We like to put them iv their usual form sometimes to show how much they look like advertisements, as, Jor example :— J. B. Lippincott & Co, annouace for speedy pub- lication a new novel by John Esten Cook, entitled “Her Majesty the Queen.” The sabject and title of Mark Twain's promised Bew book are said to be “John Bull.”” A new poem may shortly ve expected from Mr. Browning. Mr. Tennyson is at work upop another poem. ‘The title.of Bayard Taylor's new poem, which has @iready appeared in England, is “Lars.” Some wicked wretci has suggested that Bayard Taylor shoukl kave called this poem “Larsus,” Which, We suppose, 18 @ vulgarism for molasses, Occasionally, bowever, these “announcements” fre both valuable and interesting. Here is one :— Caleb Cushing has nearly ready ap important Monograph on resent phases of international law to be called “The Lreaty of Washingten; Its Nego- Uation, Execution and the Discussion Relating Thereto.” Harper & Brothers will publish the book. It is @ matter of very little general interest who are to publish it, but it is an importany piece of news that we are to have all the knowledge of the man who knows most abeut it on the nrest im- portant piece of diplomacy of modern times. We are giad Mr. Cashing hus found time to write the history and sum up the results of a negotiation in which he was the master spirit. Here also is AM ADNOUNCeMent Which will have Anterest for all persons who regard with curiosity the results of women’s work in fells which before Were generally regarded a8 the allotted sphere of men. Among the literary novelties of the coming Sum- mer or Autumn is a yolume which wjll record the exveriegces of Mjss Marwaretha Weouner, 8 young ‘NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1873—QUADRUPLE SHEET. ane (2: tach omen sats, ete, book mentioned iar and witc, in the Seventh, avenue and Fourteenth street to the southeast | side 4 Thisty-foarth, street, between First. avenue and SALE. .
