CoyxGRessiexaL Work.—Althongh the last session of Congress was a short one, there was an immense amount of work done. In the Senate there were 291 written repor from committees on various bills, making a total ot 623 during the Congress; a larger wim- ber than in any session for many years before. Some of these reports—those of the investigat- ing committees especially—were very long. MMITTEE REPORT ADVERSELY TOA SEN- ATORIAL INVESTIGATION. The committee on privileges and elections, to whom was referred the memorial of thirty- seven members of the Missouri legislature in regard to the elestion of Louis V. Begy to the Senate of the United States from that state, have had the same under consideration. The memorial sets forth that the recent examina- tion by a eommittee appointed by th representatives of the legislature of Missouri touching the corrupt use of money in the elec- tion of Ar. Bogy was imperfect; that it was not fall and fair, and that, in the by torres of the memorialists, if the investigation had been conducted with more vigor, and with a purpose of revealing the real facts of the ease, other a more important evidence would have been p duced showing that there was corruption in Mr. Bogy’s election. The memorial, however. does not state that additional facts ean be proved, nor indicate with any certainty the character of the new evidence that may produced. The committce understand that the only duty which they have upon this referen. is to report to the Senate whether the 1 - rial presents such facts as would justify the Senate in instituting an examination in regard to the election of Mr. Bogy, and are of the opinion that it does not. Snch a proceeding is of a grave character, and should not be set on foot without such a statement of the evidence that could probably as would appear to make it the duty of the Senate to proceed to an in- vestigation. The evidence taken by the committee of the legislature of Missouri also accompanies the memorial, and has been examined by the com- mittee. It is not the province of the committee upon this reference to inquire whether judg: ment pronounced by the House of Representa- tives of the Missouri Legislatare upon this evi- dence was correct; but express the opinion that the evidence is not of a character to re- quire of the Senate an investigation. Thecom- mittee therefore ask to be discharged from the further consideration of the memorial and the evidence touching the election of Louis Y. Bogy to the Senate of the United States.
