FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Sudden Relaxation in the Money Market. —_—+———— The Rate on Call Declines from 1-16 a, Day to 5 Per Cent Per Annum. THE LEGAL TENDER RESERVE Backing and Filling of the Treasury Department. soli The Street Puzzled to Compre- hend Treasury Policy. GOLD HEAVY AND LOWER. A Drooping ‘Speculation at the Stock Ex- change and a Decline in Prices, with a Reaction at the Close. Lake Shore Exceptionally Strong in View of a Contest at the Annual Election. eg Se Decline in Government Bonds—The Railroad Bonds Active and Firm—The Bank ef England Rate Unaltered. WALL STREET, } Tnurspay, March 13—6 P. M. a "Change to-day cotton was only in moderate Wequest, and lower for both spot and future. ¥Vieur, wheat and corn were dull, but not materi- ly changed in price. THE GOVERNMENT GOLD SALE. There were nineteen bids for the government eld, at prices ranging from 114.51 to 115.07, the amount called for being $2,945,000, The sale, which ‘Was confined to the advertised $1,500,000, was made at 114.92 to 115,07, THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London quotations show a bigher and firmer market for consols this evening, as if prices had been strengthened by the reported retusal of the Queen to accept the resignatien of Premier Giad- stone; but some of the improvement is doubtless @ue to easier money in London, although there is a decrease of £257,000 an the weekiy bullion ac- count of THE BANK OF ENGLAND. The latter fact is doubtiess the explanation why the minimum of the rate of discount at the Bank ef England remains unaltered at 33. per cent. United States bonds were better in feeling, and in Pome cases in prices to the extent of 3, per cent, Erie shares were unsettled and strong, and after an advance to 53 closed at 62%. The new French Joan Was quoted steady at 644 per cent premium, ‘but French rentes in Paris were lower at 56.50, MONEY EASIER, ‘The money market opened active, if not strin- went, and a good deal of business on call loans was d@one early in the day at as high as 1-16 per cent, equivalent to pretty nearly 23 per cent per annum. This was the extreme, however, on the side of high rates, for the market, alter a speedy relaxa- tion to the familiar 1-32, and an intermediate recur- ence to 1-16, weakened unti) loans were made at as low as 5 per cent ip pienty Of time for bank ac- eounts, the rate CLOSING AT 6 PER CENT at 3o'clock. Commercial paper was neglected, but qeoted a 9 a 12 per cent discount for prime names. Foreign exchange was lower to the extent of 4 per cent for sight sterling, the prime rate for which was reduced to 108%, the sixty-day rate re- ‘maining 108, The market was dull, with the actual business, Buch as there was, at a concession of 4 a Je Upon the & king rates. The contraction of the margin between sight and sixty-day bills to \ per cent is an approach to an adjustment of the real difference between them, which, with the Bank of England rate 335 per cent, ought not to be over 5 7 brasil GOLD LOWER—1154{ A 114%, The gold market was heavy and the average quotation was lower, a few sales being made at a @eciine to 114%, but the last price was 115, which eontinued to be bid. The weaker temper of the market is referrible to the reduction in the rates for sight exchange and also to the large exports of domestic merchandise. The course of the mar- ket, which seemed wholly unaffected by the Wash- ington telegrams about the increase in the legal tender currency, was as follows :— «11555 2 P.M... ns . 118% 3P.M. nb . 5 P.M rad sees Hes “ 0 P. The Tennessces were strong and advanced to s4, which was bid at the close for more. The Missouria old Off 10 93%, but rallied toa. The new South Carolinas were offered at 19% in the forenoon, but ‘were heid higher at the last call. The old bonds were offered at 40. New North Carolinas sold at 37%. Another important transaction yesterday was made at private sale by John McClave of a plot 100 feet square, located on the north Side of Sixty- second street, 100 leet west of Central Parc (kignth) ‘avenue, for $70,000, all cash, ‘This on 48 considered very low, and was accepted on account of temporary pecuniary eR erasument or the owner, ‘The saine lots were sold in 1871 for $60,000, and the four adjoining, fronting 100 feet on Sixty-second street and 100 feet on the avenue, were sold October 4, 1871, for $130,000.
