WALL STREET, } TUESDAY, 46 P.M, ‘On ’Change to-day cotton was quiet and easier, “both for “spot” and “future.” Flour was in de- mand and firm. Wheat was quiet, but also firm, -while corn was dull and somewhat weak, THE EXPORTS OF THE WEEK. The total exports of domestic merchandise from the port of New York for the week ending February -4, 1873, were of the currency value of $5,611,700, THE SYNDICATE NEGOTIATIONS. The Syndicate opened the books this morning for the reception of subscriptions to the new five per «cent Joan of the United States, and received a vast mumber from out of town banks and bankers. The ‘books were also OPENED IN EUKOPE, ‘but the progress of the negotiation there has not “been reported beyond in a general way, to the -edfect that it encourages a belief in its complete success. A rumor prevailed on Wall street late this afternoon that to-day’s subscriptions amounted «to $170,000,000, but it could not be traced to reliable authority. THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London quotations came about steady for eponsola and strong and higher for the '67’s and ‘mew fives. The former advanced % and the latter 3% per cent. On the other hand, the ten-forties re- ceded %. Erie shares opened at a jump to 54%, but gradually declined to 533;. The new French loan “was quoted at a premium of 6}4 per cent. MONEY ACTIVE. ‘The money market was more active, with an ad- «wance in the rate on call to the exceptional ex- treme of 1-16 per cent. The early business of the «day was at 7 per cent, coin, with a moderate amount of transactions at plain 7 per cent on stocks and an occasional transaction at 6 per cent -on government securities. By the time the crowd Thad collected on the sidewalk the rate had ad. -vanced to 7 gold a 1-82. Later on 1-32 and interest ‘was bid, upon which some FRIGHTENED BORROWERS supplied themselves at 1-16. But the quotation «closed eventually at 7 a 7 coin per cent, During *this activity money was offered abundantly at 7 per cent for thirty to sixty days for a bonus of % a 3% . er cent. Prime commercial paper was quoted 8a @ per cent discount. Foreign exchange was steady -@nd dull at the standard of rates last quoted. GOLD STRONG—112% A 11334. ‘The gold market opened weak and fell off to "212%, on the generat belief in the success of the ‘Syndicate in negotiating the new loan. But the absence of definite particulars as to the extent of the day's subscriptions encouraged the gold clique 4n @ fresh turn of the windlass, by which they raised the price to 113%, their confident bearing Antimidating quite a number of the “shorts,”’ who, dn their alarm at what would be the consequences -of a failure of the Syndicate, covered their con- Aracts in hot haste. The “short’’ interest having ‘deen quite large, in anticipation of the success of ‘the negotiation of the new five per cents, the -soepticism of the clique found a bread field on which to saw their ridicule of the Syndieate. The scourse of the market is shown in the table:— 113 12:53 P. M.. « 118% 11315 + 11335 - HB In the gold loan market the rates ranged feeth 6 per cent for carrying to flat for borrowing. GOVERNMENTS STRONG. ‘The government list was less active, dealipgs NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1873—TRIPLE SHEET. being interrupted by the temporary diversion of interest to the progress of the Syndicate negotia- tion of the new loan. The market at the first board was only bteady and intensely dull, but with the advance in gold prices strengthened and improved, the new fives closing at 113% a 114, when gold was quoted 113% a 113%. The swimming career of the stock market was arrested to-day by what were doubtles@ heavy realizations to secure the profits of the considera- ble advance of the past few days, the old rule among stock aperators to “sell on Tuesday” (and bay on Friday) having proved a wise one for those who remembered, believed and acted upon it since last Thursday evening. The great feature again ‘was Western Union, which led off with @ further advance to 91, but at that point turned tail and atter a series of fitful movements in the interval between 893; and 90% declined eventually to 89%, ita conquest by the “bears” causing a feeling of GENERAL DESPONDENCY in the rest of the list, especially as the sceptics of the Gold Room started an uneasy apprehension of a fizzle in the Syndicate negotiation of the new loan. The depression thus occasioned was 1n no way relieved by the greater activity of the money market, which, as, far as could be judged, was wholly free of artificial interference. The next important decline was in Erie, which dropped to 673 in sympathy with the London market, which in turn had fallen, it was rumored, on heavy sales on ordera through the cable for the account of Jay Gould, although parties here were willing to make affidavit that the same personage was a heavy buyer. New York Central, after saies at 1064,—the very HIGHEST IN-ITS HISTORY— fell off to 105: St. Paul, Northwestern and C., 0. and I. C. were comparatively steady and Wabash was firm. Northwestern preferred was weak and nominai and declined to 92. Erie preferred ad- vanced to 82, which was taken to mean that the dividend is assured, some going 80 far as to say it would be announced next Friday. Pacific Mai) was neglected at 733; a 7244. New Jersey Central sold at 106, and Lackawanna was steady at 103, Harlem ‘was unaffected by the announcement of the new consolidated mortgage loan, and was duil at 120 a 1204.
