THE EXPORTS OF THE WEEK. ‘The total exports of domestic merchandise from the port of New York for the week ending January 21, 1873, were to the currency value of $4,580,333, THE FOREIGN MARKET. _ oa The London quotations have been higher and firm throughout the day, with a recovery in consols Ol all that was lost yeaterday, a fact confirmatory of cable despatches that the relations of England and Russia are entirely harmonious ag to the Khivan question instead of be unfriendly. There was a further advance in the United States five per cents, steadiness in the 67's and & recovery in the 65's. Erie shares were active and rose to 50, equivalent to 62% in our currency. CONGRESS AND THE SYNDICATES. Washington advices state that the Ways and Means Committee announced to the Secretary of the ‘Lreasury that they had no suggestions to make as to the negotiation of the new loan, wherefore the inference was taken that they had no objection to his proceeding with the refunding of the debt through the agency already employed. It was sub- sequently reported that Mr. Boutwell had accepted the offer of the Jay Cooke Syndicate, ana still later that he had decided to divide the $300,000,000 of five per cents evenly between the Jay Cooke and the Mortdn-Bliss Syndicates. MONEY UNSETTLED, The money market was moderately active during the greater part ofthe day, and gradually hardened until, in the vicinity of half-past two o'clock, bor- Towers on stock collaterals paid 7 per cent gold and occasionally 1-64 in addition to 7 per cent cur- rency. Before the close of dealings on the side- walk the rate fell off again to 6a7 per cent, and some nominal transactions were reported at 5a3 percent. Among the government dealers the rate Was steady at6a7per cent throughout the day. Mercantile paper was easier and quoted 7a 10 per cent discount for prime names. Foreign exchange was firm and quotations unaitered: GOLD STRONG—113% A 113%. + The gold market opened weak upon the denial of the reports of @ misunderstanding between the governments of Great Britain and Russia, and the price fell off to 11344. Here the market took a fresh start, under what appeared very much like clique manipulation, and advanced to 113%, but under- went a relapse to 113), as soon as the news was received that Mr. Boutwell had been given carte dlancne to go ahead with the further negotiation of the new loan through the agency of the Syndicate. Toward the close the market reacted to 113% and wound up strong on the announcement that the steamer of to-morrow would take a SPECIE SHIPMENT of $150,000 gold. A portion of the afternoon was occupied by a special session of the Board, at which the Executive Committee thereof resigned in a body. It seems that since the retirement of Mr. Hoyt, the Vice President, a number of the members have inaugurated a movement to succeed him with @ non-salaried oMicer, and intended placing Mr. W. B. Bend in nomination for the position on this plat- form. This action was regard as intringing upon the dignity of the Executive Committee, who intended nominating Mr. T. F. B. Parker, of their own num- ber, for the vacant Vice Presidency, and hence the unanimous tender of their resignations, which were accepted, This matter has added fresh fuel to the already excited agitation in the Board over the question of rescinding the privileges of powers ofattorney. The course of the market is shown in the table :— GOLD FLUCTUATIONS, &C. teeeeee age 10 A, M. In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 2 to 5 percent for carrying. Thus a fairly animated busi- ness was done in Erie, Lake Shore, New York Cen- tral and Rock Island at frm prices, Erie undergoing arise to 63% in sympathy, firs, with the tenor of the London quotations and in consequence, later, of surmises that the special committee to whom had been referred the question of the dividend on the preferred stock had agreed to declare one, and of reports that the agents of the company in Lon- don had succeeded in satisfactorily negotiating the 4 {| recently authorized LOAN OF TEN MILLIONS. Should this last mentioned matter prove true, the success of the negotiation speaks volumes for the estimation in which the present Erie managers are held in England. An advance in Lake Shore to 9334 testified a recurring faith in the ability of the company to keep up the payment of dividends, and a rise in Rock Island to 112 is a remarkable sequence to the recent creation of six millions of new capital. New York Central was steady at pretty nearly the highest of its lately achieved im- provement, and St, Paul in better demiand at a rally to 533g. On the other hand there was a fresh pressure to sell Western Union on the UNEQUIVOCAL DENIAL by Commodore Vanderbilt of his alleged com- plicity inthe “bull? movement therein, while a lower range of quotations for Pacific Mail and Wabash attested the existence of a bearish senti- ment, the latter stock experiencing a natural re- action under the wider Knowledge and less fa- vorable interpretation of the action of the com- pany in issuing the new mortgage loan of five mil- ons, The coal railways were lower under the op- position threatened by the Coal trade to the com- binations nearer the mines. Otherwise the char- acteristics of the market are summed up briefly in the designatiuns—steadiness and dulness, the re- ported success of the new Syndicate movement producing much less enthusiasm than might have been anticipated. However, tis last influence is one which may develop into one of exceeding importance beiore “the Spring rise’ has buried the débris of “the January thaw.” HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. M. There was a still freer movement in trade circles to-day,superinduced in part by the material advance in the gold premium within the day or two past, and the merchandise markets were characterized by increased firmness in nearly every department. There have been more speculative ventures within the past few days than for a long time previously, though the sales are mainly to meet legitimate re- quirements. There was a free export movement, and much more active inquiry for vessels for charter asa direct and natural consequence of it; but the movement was restricted by the scarcity of vessels and the high rates demanded for them. Still busi- ness for shipment is satisfactory and increasing in volume from day to day. Cotton remained compar- atively quiet at unchanged figures, At the Produce Exchange there was more tone to the markets gen- erally, the greater buoyancy in breadstu/ls being still the chief feature, Flour was active and in some cases higher. Wheat was wanted at the full prices of yesterday, while buyers in- sisted upon and in some cases received an advance, the market closing strong under a mode- rate export demand. Corn was fairly active and rather firmer. Oats were in good request, and considerable sales were effected at fail prices. The movement in provisions was sluggish except in lard, which sold freely at yesterday's prices, reight room by vessels on the berth was sought after to only a moderate extent, and rates remained without essential change, ‘The chartering business was brisk at full rates. Petro- Jeum remained dull, but a little firmer feeling was mani- fested. Naval stores were about steady under a better demand. East India goods were quiet. Metals were quiet, but firm, Wool, although quiet, exhibited consd- erable firmness. Asuns.—Recelpts for the past three days, 57 packages.
