es THE METHODIST MINISTERS, aml Condition of the Churches—Old- fashioned Revivals and Modern Ones Contrasted. ‘This clerical body met yesterday in greater nume bers than usual, alter the exciting debates of the two previous weeks on annihilation. The subject under consideration yesterday was the religious ondition of the churches, 1t was treated of in a e@onversational way. The several speakers gave brief but interesting sketches of the revival infu- ence which prevails at present in their respective Charges, enlivening the same with an occasional incident of remarkable conversion or comments On the kind of preaching that is heard in the pulpits Of this day as contrasted with the past. + Rev. Mr. Gorham, of Newark, regretted that re- Vivals are conducted now “in the highest style of the art,” and not on old-fashiened principles, as in the days of Wesley and Fletcher and Asbury and the Fathers. Conviction for sin is not as decp and pungent now as then, because, he feared, thore is not enough of the doctrine of eternal Punishments and rewards in their sermons, Re ‘was amazed to hear what he had heard in the meoting two wecks ago, and it was an evidence to his mind that there ts a strong and inoreaeins doubt in the minds of the preachers of the presen’ @ay in regard to the duration of future punish- ments. Penitents are sung into the kingdom of God upon sheet music, and the time-honored songs of the Fathers are ignored for those™giory halle- dujah” songs of to-day. Hence it was harder to get the masses to move toward God now than formerly, Mr, Dickinson and Mr, Hollis did not sympathize with these sentiments at all. They thought that ‘the people being much more intelligent to-day than they were filty or seventy-five years ago, they act more from principle now than they did then, and there is consequently less need for the deep con- viotion o! which Mr, Gorham had spoken, ‘The ministry, they thought, are none the less faithful and eilicient now than they were oi old, and the domestic and social and commercial lives of the communities in which they (the speakers) live are None the less pure and holy than were those of the Gaya of the Fathers. PEDESTRIANISM, {From Bell's Life, Dec. 28.] On Monday last a sprint race, which has excited More interest than any sporting event in the neigh- orhood for many years past, was decided in the presence of about one thousand: spevtators, at Haglar lane, Gosport.
