WALL STREET, } Fripay, Jan, 10—6 P. M. On Change to-day cotten was quiet and steady for spot, but rather firmer for future. Flour re- mained quiet, but steady, while wheat and corn wore dull and somewhat easier. THE DRY GOODS IMPORTS. Tho total imports of foreign dry goods at the port of New York for the week ending January 9, 1873, were $1,569,765, The amount marketed during the same period was $1,562,478, THE FORRIGN MARKET, The London quotations were a fraction lower, say % for United States securities and 1-16 fer con- sols at the beginning of business, but recovered and closed strong at the advance of Thursday. Erie shares were weak and underwent a further decline of one per cent. In Paris rates advanced ‘to 53.95, but receded to last night's quotation, viz, :—63.82, The Bank of France shows a decrease or the week of 1,333,000 francs. MONEY EASIER. The money market opened active, with the bulk .of business in call loans at 1-82—a few transactions occurring at as high as 1-16 in addition to7 per cent. in the afternoon, however, there was a sudden relax- ation to 6 a 7 per cent by the time for the closing of the banks. Some loans were reported to have been made at 5percent. The rejaxation was all the more surprising as the Treasury received over a miluon of currency in payment for the gold sold yesterday, while a million of gold certificates went (nto the Treasury for EXOHANGE INTO COIN preliminary to a specie shipment of that amount to-morrow. The market for mercantile paper con- tinues to show an easier tendency, and transac- tions were reported at about 10 per cent for prime names, but quotations are still wide—viz., 8 a 12 per cent discount for first class paper. Foreign exchange was firm and steady, with actual busi- ness on the basis of 109}; for prime bankers’ sixty day sterling and 110% for sight bills. The borrowed aterling reported as sold yesterday amounted to ‘only £100,000, for which the seller got a trifle over | 109%. GOLD PEVERISH—112% A 112} a 1124. The gold market was feverish ana alternately weak and strong, closing firm. The early heavi- ness of our bonds in London started a rise to 11234, following whick there was a relapse to 11234 on the recovery of the foreign market, which was reported buoyant again with the strect rate for money in London down to 24 percent. But the subsequent large engagements of specie for export to-merrow, coupled with the steadiness of foreign exchange, sccasioned a second reaction to 112%, at which price the market eventually closed. The extent of the engagements for to-morrow is not less than a million gold coin, but THE SPECIE SHIPMENTS may include @ quarter to half a million more, unless the whole prospect should be disarrangea ‘by lower rates for sterling. The course of the market is shown in the table :— 112% 112% M24 a 11235 In the gold loan market the rates ranged frem 5 per cent, currency, to 7 per cent, gold, for carry- ing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows:— Gold cleared. ‘Gold balances... Currency balances. 1,931, The Sub-Treasury paid out $417,000 on account of interest and $7,000 on account of redeemed five- twenties. THE RAILROAD BONDS. The railroad bonds were in the main steady, with more active business. The Boston, Hartford and Fries declined to 44 for the plain description, and advanced to 61 for the guarantecd. The Union Pa- cifics were demoralized by sales credited to appre- hension of the Crédit Mobilier investigation by Congress, the firsts failing to 85, the land grants to 77 and the incomes to 76, Central Pacifics were firm at 993g. The government list was heavy under a freer supply of bonds, and prices declined, the chief weakness being im the 67's, which fell off 3; per cent to 114%. The lower range of quotations to- day 1s attributed in the first place to @ quite Datural reaction from the recent activity and buoyancy which characterized thia department of Wall street business, and, in the second, to a pres- sure of sales on uptown and out-of-town orders following the report of the stringency in the Moncey market on Thursday, a cause that will doubtless cease with this evening's account of the money market. STOCKS DULL AND IRREGULAR. The stock market was dull and irregular, taking it in its general aspect, but was quite active as to a few of the leading favorites, while its irregularity embraced a greater proportion of weakness than of strength. The whole forenoon seemed, indeed, given over to the unrestrained operations of the “bears,” who hammered the market with flattering success, the weakest feature being Erie, which, under the reputed manipulation of Jay Gould, de- clined to 603/, in which it was still below the Lon- don quetation, as it has been daily for the whole week, the English market seeming, by some strange interchange of ascendancy to, be controlled by the New York price, instead of controlling it, as it has usually heretofore. Quite A POINT WAS MADE by the “bears”? in depressing Lake Shore to 915;, ex dividend, against the current sentiment of the street, that, with the dividend off the price would be so low as to tempt active buying of such a stock. A farther decline in Ohios attesied a further diver- sion of interest to New York Central, while a break oi 2 per cent in Union Pacifics to 353g was ascribed to the Congressional resolution for a wholesale in- vestigation and overhauling ofthe affairs of the company. Wabash declined te 72%, but recovered ‘¢ percent. Western Union and Rock Island were less active, bit firmer, and closed strong. Pacific Mail, after an early display of gymnastics on the inclined plane, took the flying trapeze to 72 on the announcement from Washington that the Com- mittee on Appropriations had GONE THROUGH THE FORMALITY of including the extra subsidy.of $500,000 granted by Congress last year in the appropriations for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1873. Meantime New York Central had been quiet at 10134 a 102, With the relaxation in money the bullish element rallied around this stock and by a brilliant movement car- ried it up to 104, the sudden rise giving new vitality to the rumors of an extra dividend, some of the more excited “believers in Central’ predicting that the veteran Commodore would spring the dividend over night. The evidence of a forth- coming scrip dividend en New York Central lies very curiously in a remarkable concidence, which has confirmed the faith of the street in its intended declaration, Whenever there has been a SENSATION IN CENTRAL its development has been preceded by the appear- ance in Wail street of the muscular Christian and ex Congressman John Morrissey. Now the genial John has veen a haditué of the street for the past week or ten days, and “thie boys’ look upon him as the swallow that predicts the Summer in Cen- tral. He made a fortune out of the “big rise” in Central in 1868, “so said.” The next time he ap- peared it was to go “short” of everything just be- fore the Black Friday panic, And now he turns up again when the air is full of another sensation in Central. The directors of the illinois Central Rail- road announce a semi-annual dividend of 5 per cent cash, payable February 1, the transfers closing January 16, HIGHEST AND LOWEST, ‘The following table shows the highest and lowest prices of the principal stocks during the day :— Highest, Lowest, New York Central 101g Erie....... 60% 964 ex-div. 1% + 13% 725 + BL 80% Nerthwestern’ preferred. 8715 8735 Rock Island 1097; 109% St. Paul... + 58 M4 St. Paul preferred (No transactions.) Bey gee enipay, Jan. 106 P. M. The merchandise markets remained without noteworthy change, and certainly there was no change for the better, as there was mani- fest on every hand an _ indisposition to operate. There was almost mo demand for very many commodities; but there was no disposition to press goods on the market—holdcrs generally manifesting undiminished confidence in the future, Cotton remained quiet, and business in spot cotton was light. At the Produce Ex- change there was but little change in the markets— the most noteworthy of which was the depression in breadstufs.
