“NEW YORK HERALD,’ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1872—TRIPLE SHEET. AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY, ‘The annual meetingof the New York Branch of ‘Whe American Colonization Society was held yester- gay afternoon in the society's offices, in the Bible House. The report of the Board of Managers was read by ev. George W. Sampson, D. D., and in substance is As follows:—After referring to some diminution in Abe collections in aid of the society during the past Year, which the writer attributes to “the occupa- ‘tion of the public mind with the Presidential clec- Aion," it continues as follows:— By the present arrangement for sending eml- ‘ants new colonists are occasionally brought to iew York, They are visited by reporters of jour- gals which control public opinion Srrgnghnes the entire country, and new impressions of the yore character of the people sent out to Liberia and their high aspirations in their mission to the land of their ancestors are begining to prevail. This was especially illustrated in the ard of the 150 emigrants trom Georgia sent out ut a few weeks since, when the comfortable ar- fangements for the emigrants and the hberal provision tor them by the Liberian government aud the Colonization Society, were commended in @ spirit of candor and even of eulogy. The recent Xplorations in Central Africa prom as they have the English government to initiative efforts for the suppression of the slave trade, have erongnt into favorable contrast the ameliorating ind persuasive influence of colonization in Africa by Christian natives. English capitalists, quicker 0 appreciate this power and prone than Ameri- ‘can philanthro} ps 8, are availing themselves of it Dy loaning the Liberian Republic funds for the con- Atruction of interior roads. The death of Professor 8, F. B. Morse, Presi- ‘Gent of the socicty, was alluded to in eulogistic rms, The following is the substance of the financial Weport as read:—The collections made in this State in behali of African colonization are made ahrough the agency of the travelling secretary of the American Colonization Society, who labors ore or less in other States. The entire amount ‘of his collections this year, including a portion of a Dequest, is about $18,000, ‘The election of officers was next taken up, and Rev. Benjamin J. Haight, D. D., newly elected Bishop of Massachusetts, was chosem President in he place of Professor S. F. B. Morse, deceased ; lon. Thomas W, Olcott, of Albany, Vice President, ‘vice Hon, Erastus Corning, deceased; Rev. Henry ic. Potter, D. D., was chosen chairman of the Exe- ‘cutive Committee. The following were appointed ‘delegates to Washington to the annual meeting of Aue parent society, to be held the third Tuesday in January vy. Samuel D. Alexander, D. D.; Rev. William F, Morgan, D. D.; Almon Merwin, §, M. uckingham, Theodore L. Mason, M.D. The meet- g then adjourned, STREET CLEANING, The Superintendent of the Street Cleaning Bureau reported yesterday to the Commissioners ‘pf Police that the amount spent during the past week for cleaning the streets was $11,684 37. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. At half-past eleven o’clock yesterday morning Conrad Schamberger, nineteen years of age, who lived in a shanty in Seventy-third street, near ave - ue A, Sttempted to hang himself ina stable in ne rear of his house, but was prevented from doing ‘0 by the arrival of some friends.
