NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1872.—TRIPLE sinity! STEAM ON THE CANALS. Arrival of a Bow-Propelicr from Buaf- faio—A Candidate for the Government Premium—The Largest Cargo Carried ‘Through the Canal. ‘The question of the propulsion of canal boats by steam has been one considered for some years past of vital importance in the mercantile community, and the subject was revived with additional vigor during the late epizootic era. Of such moment did the government consider it that some time ago tt Offered a prize of $190,000 to the constructor of a steamboat of large carrying capacity which should Prove to be the best adapted for canal tratic. In order to win this valuable premium a number of Persons entered the lists, and several steamers have been constructed. The last one of these ves- sels ts the Success, which arrived from Buffalo last ‘week, bringing by far the largest cargo ever car- Bled on one trip, it consisting of no less than THIRTEEN THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED BUSHELS of grain, while other boats average only from five to six thousand, The principle Ley which the Success is constructed is novel in the extrems. It conaists of a train of three boats, which join closely ther in sections. The first of these contains the mojre power, and can carry 300 tons; the midship lon, which resembles au oblong box, can carry 280 tons, as can also the rear section, at the stern of which are the rudders and boiler. ‘The wheel of the “Success” consists of a drum filled with cork, which increases the buoyancy of the boat and lifts it over shoals; this drum is in fact A REVOLVING BOW, and paddies or buckets cross its curved surface. They do not go across in a single line, but are broken into two lines, which make an angle like the letter V. These buckets are elght leet in width on either side and twelve inches fae) and they glide into the water like the flange of the screw, drawing the boat instead of propelling it. On either side of the drum is a large cogwhcel which is turned by a smaller cog revolved by the driving rods of a powerful horizontal engine.. The water is driven by the drum wheel under the boat, and therefore is in no way liable to arty the banks the canal. fhe boiler one of ‘forty-horse power and is nenatad the rear of the last boat, steam being communicated to the engine thr ough tubes, ‘The “train” can attain and maintain a speed of three anda half miles per hour and, by an easy contrivance of partially disjointing the sections it can round bends and curves with the greatest ease. Of course, at the locks the sections have to be wholly disconnected and taken through separately, but this delay is more than amply atoned for by the fact that the train can convey a cargo nearly four times as large as the capacity of a singie boat would admit of, and make at icust one mile and a half por hour GREATER SPEED. The Success consumes only two tons of coal per diem, and has been designed and constructed in Butlfalo, by Captain William F. Goodwin, of this city, who intends to apply for the premium offered by the government. entleman has already patented lis invention, and is sanguine of his suc- cess in consequence of the working of it during its passage of four hundred miles under very many disadvantages. It is probable that ere long tow- paths will become deserted, and all traffic upon canal routes will be conducted by steam—then horses wili be privileged to have the hipporninor- rhea as o(ten as they please; we shall not starve for want of grain from the Western States, —+—___ MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. ra Married. — ConNors—HaRsoN.—On Sunday, November 24, at a Vincent Ferrer's Catholic church, by the Rey.
