8 THE NEW NORSE KING. Wwe sca Captains and the Seerctary of the Scandinavian Consulate Swearing Allegiance to Oscar the Second—The Swedish and Norwegian Oaths and the Ceremony of Subscribing Them, ‘The Consulate OMce of Sweden and Norway was visited yesterday by ‘Wo sea captains desiring to swear the oath of allegiance to Osear the Second, ‘Me handsome and courtly Secretary, Mr, Alexan- der Solberg, was also sworn by his prineipal, the ©onsut, by way of breaking the weariness and mo- motovy of waiting for other applicants. ‘The cere- mony is quite an interesting one, although it is very simple. The Secretary of the Consulate stands at the right of the Consul and reads the oath, while the citizen of Scandinavia raises his left haud, with the thumb and two fingers erected, while the rest are doubled to the paim. he sig- nificance of these three digits, in accordance with the forms of the Lutheran Church, is “the Father, and the Holy Spirit.” The obligation taken the Swedes is more lengtiry and expletive than that of the Norwegians, It is as follows :— THE SWEDISH OATH. efore God and on Wifast and true ing. the Grand Duke aud Master Oscar iI, rway, Goths and Wendes in the sa to King of Swede time, keeping fidelity aid faith towards the whole Roy Bousehold, J shail also with my whole life-blood the royal Hower, together with the liberties and p {Vin conformity with the con- which Tsfail in manners 1 promise, on my honor and cou- So help me God, with ny ite and soul, THE NORWEGIAN OATH ‘obey and TuiMh, nelence, to keeps pene thas:— ¢ and swear to show obedience and milonity to te constiti sty King Oscar BI, x0 help me God and His Holy Word Consul Bors, in conversation with the Scandina- Vian Minister at Washington, who is now in this vity, Was discussing the subject of allegiance to the new King, and remarked that few of the per- | sons who came here irom Norway or Sweden had any intention of returning to their fatherland, Phe Minister said that he had not yet administered ‘ke Oath toany one in Washington, as the capital was now almost deserted, Both of the diplomatic omicials agreed 1) ng a very great de- not anticipat Mana for the test of allegiance, and attach little tmportan to what is really executed for the convenience prin farers and traveliers, In tile time of the war the | protection of the Scandinavian flags was much | sought by the emigrants from thai country in order to escape the conscription, and probably if | dere was how any prosp of international rouble it would be again eagerly seized upon, This sarcastic view of the case by the Secretary, | ‘Mr. Solberg, explains the cause of the tardiness of | the majority of the Swedes and Norwegians in this | country to become naturalized, while in all other respects they exemplarily perform the duties of eitizens and are proverbially industrious and pros- perous. The Consulate Office continues open for the ad- | Winistration of the oath, rr | MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. Married. | Gwpings—THomrsoy by Rev, Father Preston, G. H. of 20 JULIA M.
