FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. A Further Rise in Pacific Mail Shares. Sales at 100 1-4, and 100 Bid to the Close of Business. ‘MYSTIFICATION OF THE STREET. Rumored Alliance of the Smith Party with the “Bulls.” THE REST OF THE LIST LOWER. Money More Active, Closing at 6 Per Cent. AM EXCELLENT BANK STATEMENT. The London Money Market Ac- tive and Consols Down. Reported Transfer of One Hundred Million * Franes from the Bank of France to the Bank of England. RAPID FLUCTUATIONS IN GOLD. fncrease of Our Exports and Decrease of Our Imports. WALL STREET, } SATURDAY, Oct. 19—6 P. M. On 'Ohange to-day cotton was in good demand and about steady for ‘spot,’ but easier for “future,” Flour and wheat were steady under a fair demand, and corn closed a shade easier. THE IMPORTS OF THE WEEK. The total imports of foreign goods at this port during the past week were $5,301,197, made up of $1,730,610 of dry goods and $3,570,587 of gen- eral merchandise, THE EXPORTS for the same period were $6,114,056, against $5,831,476 for the corresponding weck in 1871. The total exports since January 1 have been $183, 702,167, against $190,088,115 last year. THE COTTON MOVEMENT. The receipts of cotton at ail ports for the past ‘week were 98,291 bales, against 87,268 bales the pre- viops week. The total receipts since September 1, 1872, are 416,360 bales, against 268,847 bales for the corresponding period of the previous year, show- Ing an increase in the present crop of 147,486 bales. The exports from all the ports for the week were 47,571 bales, against 33,892 balcs last year. The total exports for the expired portion of the cotton year Bre 139,026 bales, against 114,075 bales last year. The Btock at all the ports is 228,885 bales, against 184,487 bales for the same date in 1871. THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of the associated banks is highly favorable, thanks to the government dis- bursements of money, which, from the system of averages, did not make their full appearance in last week’s statement, but are seen in the one pub- Ushed this afternoon. The increase in specie is smaller than anticipated, but the gain in green- backs is not far from seven millions, The deposits have increased over eleven millions. The banks, despite their large gain in resources, show only two and a quarter millions of an increase in loans, But any EXPANSION IN LOANS at this season of the year is something out of the usual course of the banking movement and reflects the strong position in which the banks now stand. The statement compares with its predecessor of last week as follows — Oct. 12, 12,207,800 2, 625, 500 27,787,900 27,708,300 189,709,300 201,031,300 45,759,400 52,586,400 —The changes being as follows :— AN ANALYSIS of the above figures shows that the banks have in- creased their liabilities $11,290,500 against the re- ceipt of $7,234,700 of what counts as legal reserve, Their gain in net reserve is therefore $4,412,075, which, added to the excess of last week, leaves them with the (for this time of year) remark- able surplus of $8,027,475. MONEY MORE ACTIVE. There was a large inquiry for money, which was not unpatural, in view of the sudden enhancement ofthe market quotation of Pacific Mall(which prop- erty is now rated 20 per cent higher than it was a few days since), and the terms for money on call advanced from 4 to 7per cent. The market re- lapsed to 6 per cent, and closed early and quiet. Prime paper was quoted 912 per cent discount. Foreign exchange was dull and nominally un- changed. THE LONDON MARKET ‘Was excited, if we may judge by the quotations for consols, which suddenly dropped another % per cent on a rumor that there would be an extra Meeting of the Bank of England on Monday to put up the discount rate. American securities were steady. The street rate for money was reported to be 6a6% percent. Late inthe afternoon it was Yeported that the Bank of France had deposited 100,000,000 francs in the Bank of England, which means probably that the French government has decided not to call for that amount of the London subscriptions to the French loan. THE CITY BANK STOCKS. STOCKS FEVERISH AND LOWER. Outside of Pacific Mail the stock market was feverish and unsettled, with an eventual decline in prices, As for Pacific Mail, it was and isa greater puzzle than ever. The price opened at 95, dropped to 93%, and then advanced to 100%, closing at 1003. The Smith party are believed to have covered all their ‘short’? contracts, and to be either out of the market or in alliance with the Stockwell-Hatch-Gould combination. The brokers of the latter party stood in the Board this after- noon and bid par for any part of THE CAPITAL STOCK of the company. Itis thought the “bulls? have arranged to take advantage of the law permitting areduction of the Capital stock and will makea market in this way for their enormous holdings if they cannot succeed in entrapping a short interest and making a “corner,” which latter schemeseems just now a very remote contingency, as the ‘“‘beara’’ are few and far between. The general market opened strong on account of a general scare of the “shorts,’? who feared the fate of the Smith party, and in the early scramble for stocks prices ad- vanced quite sharply. But the later apprehension of AN EVENTFUL BREAK @nd disastrous fall in Pacific Mail demoralized the market and not only kept out fresh buyers but in- duced timid parties to sell out. The rise in Pacific Mail brought about the settlement of a curious contract to-day. A few montns since a broker bought for the consideration of one per cent the privilege of exchanging a thousand shares of St. Paul preferred (then about 78) for a thousand shares of Pacific Mail (then about 68) any time this year. The seller of the contract settled to-day at a loss of $20,000—St. Paul preferred being about 75 and Pacific Mail (at the fime of settlement) 95. In the Southern State bonds Tennessees sold at 75. The general list was steady and firm. HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. For several years it has been a represensible cus- tom of certain business men, mostly shipping mer- chants, to use the centre of the thoroughfare of Old slip as a ground for the storage of goods, and also occasionally for their sale. In June last this viola- tion of the laws of common right was remonstrated against by a large number of merchants command- ing capital and influence, who sent a petition to Commissioner Van Nort’ asking fot the abatement of the nuisance. Mr. Van Nort ordered the guilty parties to discontinue the obstruction of the street, threatening if they did not toprosecute them and to confiscate all goods found in the public way. One or two individuals, whose interests alone this action assailed, declared that they would fight the matter out to the bitter end, and subsequently one of the -new-fledged reform Assistant Aldermen went to the Department of Public Works and said that if they were interfered with he would intro- duce and have passed by the Board to which he belonged ®& new ordinance opening Old slip as a ublic storing place common mart. OHAS, H. SCOTT. New York, Oct. 19, 1872. J. FREDERIC TAMS, a eo BATES OVER THE BORDER. ee aa The American Flag To Be Carried from Scotland to Guildhall, London— Its Progress From Union Square to West Street. It 18 now evident that the entire Bates family was not presented to President Lincoln ty the Attorney General in 1864. One of that band of choice spirits is still “walking,” though, as Shaks- pear (you may say Bacon or Hogg, itis all the same) once said “Time was when the brains were out the man would die.” There is a certain Sergeant Bates who assisted in the settlement of the “late unpleasantness” and came out of the conflict with colossal conceptions of peace and good will towara men. He believed that away down in the depths of the male human heart there was a@ well-spring of affection for the universal brotherhood and love for the universal sisterhood continually a-bubbling, and that all the said human heart needed was “flagging” (like an express train at a way station) to bubbie over. Sergeant Bates has determined to “flag” England, and for that purpose left Union square, nearly an hour bebind time, at five minutes before eleven o’clock yesterday morning. THE ROUTE OF THE PROCESSION was through the central avenue of Union square to Fourteenth street, thence down the east side of Broadway toa point half a dozen yards below Walker street, thence across Broadway to the west side of the street, down to the south side of Dey street, and thence down the sidewalk to and across West street to the Anchor line pier and aboard the Europa, passing over the gangway. THE POLICE ESCORT was furnished by Captain Byrnes, of the Fifteenth ee ane Egon ore Mcer van Ww. ey who guarded the sergeant against the pressure the halt dozen boot itt y wee at his heels, and who also recovered the folds be ot ere flag from the faces of pasvers-by, into which C jacks and newsboys who fol- onstantly flapped by the breeze. The omMcer was very tall and rather looked down upon the sergeant, who was of medium height. But whatever the latter lacked in size was made up by gorgeousness of Caps He was clad in an army uniform of regulati scarlet and acs and decked with navy buttons, and he wore ion cut, gally trimmed with he shako of an artillery oficer. SCENES AND INCIDENTS, The flag continually flapped in the faces, and wiped the eyes, mouths and noses of the passers by as the gallant non-commissioned raised or low- ered it according as there were awnings or no awnings in his path. For several blocks its folds graceiully enveloped the darkly-beautiful features of a lady of African descent, who hailed tt as an impromptu bandanna, and not the reverse, as it will probably be called in England. A great part way away a boot black to the right and a boot black to the left Pea it, their boxes and brushes slung upon trophies, heir arms after the manner of “What's he done?” cries one. “Where's he gone?* “Whav's the matter?” “Ts it a cireus, boss?" These were the endless queries trom the street Arabs, accompanied by curious glances from the | Y grown-up people. Four boys continued with the | procession to the wharf, and stared after the re- | treating form of the sergeant with a blank expres- sion, When they were stopped at the entrance to the covered pier, THE SERGEANT INTERVIEWED. “Twas taiking in thomas J. Warren's store in Saybrook, Il., about the Alabama Claims,” said Se 1 ee Bates, “and I said the: am was no enmity iz the people of England against our country. ren said there was, and so 1 made a bet wil h War him of $100 to $1,000 that I would walk through England from Scotland to Guildhall, in London, car- rying the American flag, without the flag or myself being attacked—‘words not to count.’ Thad $260 when I got to New York, but my pocket was picked last week at the Theatre Comique, and I lost $185, Both from choice and necessity, I will be penniless when Leuter England, and must deverd upon tue, Which can be donbled by. parties hoe El oy reasons given tor selling, Address Noe ‘ea ta tion Graires to Port atc. his busine cordially invited.
