FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. A Llvely Sensation in the Stock Market. ‘REMARKABLE RISE IN PACIFIC MAIL. Am Advance to 96 and a Re- lapse to 91. ‘The “Bull” Combination “Twist” Thelr <Bear” Opponent. WALL STREET, Fripay, Oct. 18—6 P, M. THR DRY GOODS IMPORTS, The total imports of foreign dry goods at this port for the week ending October 17, 1872, were $1,780,610. The amount marketed was $1,883,583, * MONEY BASY. i ‘The continued large dealings in the stock mar- ket Oaused an active inquiry for money early in che day, and the first transactions were at6a7per cent, But the supply was more than enough to go around at these rates, and, in the competition to secure employment for balances, money loaned at a8 low as8 per cent before the close of banking hours. . Prime paper was quoted 9 @ 12 percent dis- count. FOREIGN EXCHANGE ‘was weak and lower for actual business, which in sterling was confined to sixty-day bills, owing to ‘thé disproportionate price of sight drafts, The leading drawers kept their desk rates at the last ‘etated quotations, but primo sixty-aay sterling sold ‘gt 108% and'was even heavy at that rate. Prime sight sterling bills were accessible at 1104 a %. The London market was again lower for consols, but Steady for five-twenties and higher for ten-fortics and Eries, GOLD LOWER—113¢ A 11254. ‘The gold market was weak, in sympathy with the easier tone of the foreign exchanges, and also in onsequence of rumors that the Treasury would begin next Monday to prepay, without rebate, the November coin interest on the public debt. Theso ‘matters seemed to have influence with the clique Operators, who were selling as freely as possible, ‘without precipitating too sudden a decline. The course of the market is shown in the following ‘able 11256 ga Tay In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 3 per cent for carrying to 164 for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as {ol- ows:— cleared 36,242,000 ia er af (eee cy balanc a 998,782 * The Sub-Treasury paid out $220,000 on account of interest end $24,000 in redemption of called bonds. : SOUTHERN SECURITIES STRONG. A SUDDEN EXCITEMENT IN STOCKS. ‘Tho stock market was active and strong during | } fally nine-tenths of the day, but weak, excited and lower during the ast half hour of business, the change coming over it like a Summer ciond, occa- sioning @ sensation which would be only mildiy Gesoribed 238 special wonder. Up to. the second poerd a steady and gradual rise was going on all NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1872—TRIPLE SHERT. be tenth mn tennant everybody to the stock tape to watok the battoon ascent of Pacific Mail, which, after a dreary fluctua- tion between 85% and 61, suddenly started forward at a rapid galt, clearing 90 in @ few minutes, springing next to 92 and thence bounding by jumps | ofa quarter or a half per cent at a time te'06, This was ita climax for the day, a reaction carrying it back to 91 amid great excitement. The whole thing seemed to happen in 4 moment and be over ina twinkling. Itwas near the time of adjournment. ‘The governors couldn't be got together to prolong the session, and the excited mass of brokers were thrust out upon the street in the very midst of thetr RXOPTEMENT AND CONFUSION, the falling torrents of rain preventing any side- walk discussion of the causes of the semi-panic that had so suddenly seized the entire list, and just at. the moment Pacific Mail was turning the corner of 90, As the latter moved up the othersix per cent to 96 the general market ratticd down in & very lively manner, prices going off one to two per cent in almost as few minutes, In explanation of the Startling developments of this brief but eventful mauvais quart a@heure it was said that some large BANKING HOUBE HAD FAILED, but no one ventured to mention names. The post- tive absence of anything like adefinite statement of the parties rumored to be in trouble aroused a general suspicton that the raid had beén “a scoop."” It is true that three different houses, two doing business on Broadway and one on Broad street, were variously suggested as being each the one alleged to have suspended, but nothing im their ap- pearance up to the close of business indicated such amisfortune. Short as was the time allowed for a canvass of THR SITUATION, several different theories were conjured up to ac- count for THR MYSTERY, which everybody carried home to ponder over all night. On one side it was said that the foreign bankers had refused to renew their loans of bills of exchange to the Vanderbilt clique; but this ex- planation possesses little merit in view of the de- Cline in exchange to-day, even if the loans of this kind are of important extent, most of them having been paid off within the past month when ex- change was low, while the others were renewed or are capable of renewal. A calmer opinion was that the holders of stocks had become appre- hensive that the SHARP RISB IN PAOLFIO MAIL would lead to trouble and demoralieation, as did the Rock Island rise eighteen months ago, anda wonderful unanimity of feeling on this point led to heavy sales and a “break” in prices within so brief a@pertod, When the light of to-morrow shall clear up the matter it will be found, doubtless, that this last 1s nearest the true reason of the day’s sensa- tion. As to Pacific Mall, it is pretty evident that the efforts to reconcile and bring together the two leading but recently dissenting members of the most famous clique in Wall street bad been unayail- ing, and that THR QUARREL had been only intensified by tne obstinate refusal of cach to change his position as regards the mar- ket. With this new disagreement the war broke out afresh, and the rise in Pacific Mall is only an exponent of the activity of the struggle, The “pulls” under Stockwell & Gould forced tho Oight- ing, and compelled the latter's quondam partner and friend to cover his ‘shoits” or take the chances of a “corner”? that might put its price to 125 within the next twenty-four hours, to his trre- trievable ruin, Foreseeing the course of the gen- eral market, he had largely “hedged,’’ by purchases outside of Pacific Mail, and hence in closing his contracts in Pacific Mail he was a heavy seller of other lines Of stocks, and doubtiess of a good deal of gold, i HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. The following is a synopsis of the report of the Statistician of tho Department of Agriculture upon the condition of the cotton crop in October :— The cotton prospeot has undergone no serious changes since the September report. The weather has been generally favorable for picking. No vio- lent storms are reported and drought has not pre- vailed, the rainfall in nearly all the cotton States not exceeding two inches in September, Florida alone reporting fully four thohen and Tennessee three. o devastations of the caterpillar have ex- tended further North, even into North Oarolina, and have involved the top crop partially and in many cases wholly, The influence of drought in ‘the later Summer ‘months has been cumulative in its eifects, and exhausted vitality is more pkpavent than in September; yet there are districts which report exemption from this remature decay and eee enhanced results. e effect of fertilizers In advancing the crops in the Atlantic States and the combined effec! worms and drought in shortening the season of growth will greatly hasten the close of picking. In some places the crop ts already gathered, and in many others the flelds will be cleared early in November. The general average of condition 1s reduced from 91 in the first week of September to i tu October. In October of last year the average was 76, which was a material reduction trom phat of the revious month. It will be seeu that the condition is still placed higher than ‘in last year’s report for October, while the area, according to our June re- turns, wasthirteen percent greater.
