Up to that time, or during the first hour or so of business, the market had been strong, and an improvement of % @ Js per cent took place. But the money quea- tion producing a fresh agitation of the speculative mind prices vecame unsettled tor the rest of the ay and a general decline eusued, in sympathy with @ fall of about two per cent in Pacific Mall, the con- sequence of the announcement that the steamer America, lately empioyed on the China branch of ‘the line, bad been burned to the water's edge in ‘the harbor of Yokohama, By é remarkably logical process “the street” took the semi-ofticial estimate Of the loss to the company of about $400,000 involved fo this disaster, and calculated that upon a capital of $20,000,000 ir amounted to ad Jinpairment of just two per cent. The stock stood 73% vefore the burning of the vessel was reported, It declined to 71% when the news got abroad. In brief, the effect was concisely and calmly figured out, and the price adjusted itself accordingly. There was no ex- eltement—no panic in the shares, Those who dooked for a vevetition of the Henry Chauncey eur , NEW YORK sation were greatly disappointed, and among these { 10 100 ot 19 12 ‘are said to be some of the offictals of the company, | Particularly those who parted with their stock last Spring at 70 a 80, and have been unable to do any better since than buy it back dt about the same | price. There was a smart decline in Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, with sales at as low as 100, which was accounted for by a rumor that the company would “pass” the dividend and that the “consolidation” with the New Jersey Central road was likely to be undone in consequence of inhar- monious interests and oficial jealousy.
