On his blanket was the figured writing of the Dakota nation, Which informed him that he was a great rave and had taken the scalps of many white men. He despised the motley and ever changing mass on Broadway, he was thinking of the long grass, the trail, the fight and pursuit: he was look- ing into the gasping face ond closing eyes of his Victim; he saw the blood oozing stowly out of the « @rrow wound which he had inflicted, and his knees Were pressed with terrible foree on the chest of his mortal enemy. Pat about eleven o'clock eighteen of the twenty- ¢ Indians were told that they had an invitation go and visit Stewart's dry goods place on roadway, end in a moment there was great uss and trouble among the squaws. It is a strange thing that the Sioux chiefa and braves who have come here to insist that they shall have Sunday schools cstablished forthwith, ao parade Broadway in their war paint if they. were going on the war path to : Siaugnter their foes. Those estimable and good- matured peopie who devote all tieir time to mis- gionary work, are not aware, perhaps, thatthe Sioux, who were present last night at a church «p- _ town, "had put on the war paint and were ready for Dattle and spoil if weapons had becn furnished em. Scemes, Incidents and Time of Arrival at Greenport. On Boarp Yacrt Mystr } Greenport, L, 1., August 7, iste. Tuesday night was passed very quietly, the fleet riding at anchor of the Pequot House, New Lon- don. The schooner yacht Resolute, Mr. A. 8. Hatch, arrived about six P.M., and joined the ficet, dropping her anchor astern of the schooner Foam. After dinner had been duly discussed a number of the guests took to the boats and visited the shore. A passing visit was paid to the Pequot House, but things looked so dull and inhospitable in that neighborhood that the majority of the aquatic visi- tors started their sheets and ran down before the wind to take a look at the village. When darkness set in the ficet at anchor with their lights up made rather an attractive picture, and soon the flashing of some fireworks from some one aboard the yachts lit up the scene and cnticed some of the hotel residents to the water’s edge to enjoy the spectacle. The hotel appears to be tolerably full, but one misses many familiar faces from the piazza, who, report says, have fled to Newport ang other abodes by the sca in search of more comfortable quarters, During the evening Commodore Peet sent round * TE ORDER FOR TO-DAY? wy, Start for Greenport at seven A. M. Shortly after daybreak there was a stir on board the yachts, and about half-past six A. M. the greater part of the fleet had their after canvas set, await- ing the starting signal, The first gun was fired from the flagship Nimbus at 7:25., and five min- utes later a second report gave the expected order, when anchors were weighed and jibs run up with- out delay. There was a light topsail breeze from the southwest, and the tide was about the first quarter of the flood. The yachts nearly all started on the starboard tack, hending up towards Fisher’s Island. The Peerless was, as usual, one of the quickest off, but the Tidal Wave was lying off the lighthouse waiting for her, and when she came up started her sheets and ran down under her lee, after which she hauled on the wind and headed up towards Fisher's Island. The Mystic came next, followed by the Triton, which tried to weather her, but falling ran by to leeward and fol- lowed after the Peerless and Tidal Wave. The Qui Vive, Orion, Daphne, Nimbus, Annie M., Alert, Sea Witch and Foam stood to the westward on the port tack, ; THE RESOLUTE WAS ANCHORED WELL UP the harbor, and consequently got rather a poor start, but when ske got going she kept on the port ‘tack after the Mystic. About 8:10 the Peerless, Tidal Wave and Triton tacked and stood to the westward, while the Mystic, Undine and Resolute continued on the starboard tack, The Tidal Wave appeared to be doing very well, and was heading up to windward of the Peerless and Triton. At 8:30 the Mystic went in stays and stood to the westward, heading up for Plum Island. The wind ‘was nearly southerly with a shade ofeasting. The Resolute stood in close up to. Fisher’s Island and tacked to the westward about nine, heading well up for Big Gull Island. The Tidal Wave went on the starboard tack a few minutes before hoading to the eastward. THE PEERLESS AND TRITON Were onthe port tack, heading to the westward and tothe southward of Gull Island; the Daphne, Alert and Undine were about half a mile to lee- ward of the Triton, and the Mystic was coming up in the wake of the latter, about half a mile astern. The Resolute was away off to the east- ward, heading up for Gull Island, and the Sea Witch was about a mile to leeward ‘of the Mystic. The Orion was off to the westward, head- ing up for Plum Gut, and the Foam was about two Lee off her lee quarter, The Qui Vive tacked atten A. M., and stood on the starboard quarter after the Tidal’ Wave. ‘The latter vessel when on the port tack was afraid of drifting down on the Silas Rock, and had to veer ship m order to avoid such a calamity. This manwuvre delayed her some minutes, THE NIMBUS SOON FOLLOWED the same tactics and went on the starboard tack in order to get sufticient ofing to weather Big Gull Island. About eleven A, M, the Orion got into Plum Gut, followed by the Triton, Undine, Peerless, Daphne, Mystic, Alert and Nellie G. The tide was about the last of the food and running like a mill race, signe yachts all they could do to stem its current. leasant working breeze from the southeast éante shortly afterwards and lent them a helping hand.
