Senator Murphy concurred with Judge Grover fully, and had determined to exclude all these ex- traneous matters, Mr, Beach followed at some length, calling atten- tion to the fact that much evidence bad been intro- duced showing the effect of the orders upon the finances of the road, and he then asked whether the other side should not show that all this effect was produced by the fact becoming known that the man- agement was corrupt and wrongful. He proposed to show that there were other influences at work— not secret, not (end agli had produced this ed that he had a right to do this; he denied the opinions of these witnesses. Mr. Beach—Have you any knowledge of any facts occurring at the time of these orders which showed that they affected the stock and securities ? Witness made several efforts to answer this ques- tion, but, putting in explanations, Mr. Beach would not accept the answer. Witness finally said he knew of nen calling in loans on hypothecated secu- rities; he did not know as he knew of calling in any loans on those securities. KIDNAPPING A YOUNG EMIGRANT GIRL, To Tue EDITOR OF THE HERALD:— Sin—A week ago it was proposed to give you the particulars of the kidnapping from Castle Garden of a young emigrant girl, but it was withheld at the instance of persons interested in the case, who be- Meved that its publication would interfere with the action of the police, who had the matter in hand. Now, however, that an imperfect explanation of the cireumstances has been given to one of the evening papers, the necessity of silence is re- moved. The facts.are as follows:— On the 15th of May alady named Ahearn, who then resided at the eorner of Eleventh avenue and Forty-ninth street, and has since removed to the corner of Twenty-fifth street and Third avenue, hired a girl named Catherine McGuirk, thirteen years of age—tall fer her years, intelligent and in- teresting—to mind young children. The girl had recently arrived with her father and mother and six other children, all of whom were then at Castle Garden, without means, Mrs. Ahearn, whose hus- band is in the Fire Department, kept the girl for two days, and, .as she _ states, fert her in the Garden--in other words, tthe the building at the Castle Garden—and notified Mrs. Moody, the Matron, that she returned her. Mrs. Moody acmits the statement so far, but says she did not gee the girl, and being engaged with some four or five other persons at the tizne took no notice of the matter. ere is the entire diMcuity. The woman Ahearn did not produce the girl to Mrs. Moody, but says that when she went into the de- partment the young girl ran towards the place | Where she had parted from her father and family, who, in the meantime, oink to thelr poverty, ha been transferred to Ward's Island, and since then she has not been seen or heard of. The mother has come several times to this city from Woodbridge, N. J., where her husband is em- ployed, and nas travelled the streets like a maniac, seeking for her child, but without avail. There has been negligence somewhere in this business, and I give you the particulars in the hope that some clew to the whereabouts of this inno- cent child may be obtained, or at least that steps be taken to investigate the’ facts. ‘This 1s only one ofmany cases that occur by which numbers of inno- cent be ak girls are destroyed and the founda- tion laid of those crimes which are so common among us. There is scarcely any evil of which we complain that requires reformation more than this, as on the virtue of our females depends the welfare of the entire community. It is admitted that emigration is hecessary and a principal means to the populating of the country. We cannot have a virtnous people unless we have chaste and well-conducted mothers. How can we have them or a well roguiated people unless the virtue of female emigranis is protected and the most stringent measures for their preser- vation are opened? Time will not permit me to suggest a remedy in this hurried communication. Iwill only express my regret that Irisiunen in | general, and Irish Catholics i particular, are so in- different to the well-be their own kith and kin aso have overlooked t is ‘question and failed to apply a Ber: Jae | om sir, your obedient servant, JA) O'SULLIVA |, 51 Oak street, city.
