PINANGLAL, AND COMMERCIAL, [3°22 but generally neglected, leaving off as follows:— | Tennesse, @X coupon, 124 a 73; CONTINUED SUMMER DULNESS. Works Quiet, with Erie Higher---Governments . Firm=Southern Securities Neglected and = __Saliey Mortgages oe FORTIGN EXCHANGE “OHMDD| Gold 114 1-8 a 114 38, with a Quiet Market. OUR IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. Suggestive Figures for Thought- { ful Men. WHY GOLD GOES UP. MISCELLANEOUS FACTS. WAL. Srreer, Monpay, July 22—6 P, ORDER REIGNS IN WARSAW. The street was remarkably quict to-day. The gummer Qulness appears to intensify by time, and while the mercury ascends the speculative fever bates. Thus the stay-at-homes, whether they acquire that title by cholce or necessity, are per- force placed in A PROPHYLACTIC CONDITION, @s faras speculati n ts concerned. It ts safe to say that all the markets are steady, there ts 80 Uttle doing. There was a slight movement in Erie, which may be put down as only a reflection of the effort on the other side to make a market. Erie, occupies an exceptional position anyhow on the strect, and cannot be accepted as a criterion of value for any other stock. It is virtually THE “KBNO” OF THE STOCK EXCHANGE is} attracting more popular excitement, enthusiasm, ‘ feeling, instinct, sentiment, or wlatever it might be called which illustrates preference, than aay other stock on the list. There are people who will speculate in Erie who would not deal in any other stock; just as there are individuals who are willing enongh to take a chance in a keno game, while they would be horrified at the mention of faro. *" “Gigid BRITER TO HAVE LOVED AND LO8t,”? says the poet, “than never to have loved at all; and there are plenty of men on the Stock Ex- change who appear to endorse that sentiment. Hence certain firmness in the stock market, the result of the most extravagant affection for stock speculation. Pacific Malland Erie were the only features, the former advancing to 7834 and tho lat- ter to 533, which figure they maintained at the close. We have suggested the occasion of the Erie advance; the advance in Pacific Mail is probably the result of the announcement of a third steamer, The following were the HIGHEST AND LOWEST prices of stocks during the day:— pone! og Cen. & Hudson consolidated. o! Lowest, 46 38 ¢., G. and 1. C. 35% Hannibal and 39 11844 7534 Ts Gold was dull throughout the day at the above figures, with the principal dealings at 1144. The prices of gold to-day were :— The operations of the Gold Exctange Bank to-day were as follows:— Gold balances... Currency balances 1,273,836 Gross clearances, 22)127,000 The Assistant Treasurer paid out to-day $230,000 ‘on account of interest and $55,000 in redemption of 5-20 bonds, The loaning rates were from flat to 3 per cent sor carrying. THE STRADINESS OF GOLD and its firmaess at the same time are easily ac- counted for. Our bonded warchouses are bursting with goods waiting thé 1st of August to be taken out under the ten per cent tariff reduction. The tigures for July are not yet ready, but from those of June we find the following exhibit:— Foreign Imports at New Fork for tho month of Tune, 812. aces auth « $1,108,040 Ent. for consumption... Do. tor warchousin Free y Specican Total entered at port... Witadrawn from ware: house... +» $24,415,004 Bi, 598 417 8,956,527 8,711,297 f 7,084,971 Tt will be seen that the stock in bond increased over ten millions in June, making more than forty-two miliiona increase since the beginning of the year. The total imports at New York since January 1 are $232,780,680. The total for the cor- responding six months of last year was $201,834,024, then by far the largest figures for the first six months ever written in the history of the trade. ‘The last six months now exceed that return by up- wards of thirty millions. This large increase has mostly goue into bond, where it is waiting the period of the reduced tarif, and accounts for the dullness and steady condition of the gold market during the past few weoks. The importers are waiting for the jst of the month to tak ‘advantage of the ten per cent abatement, wile holders of gold, in anticipation of a sudden demand a few weeks ence, are indisposed to sell, Hence ame firm conditiof of the guid market now. All day yesterday the people of Long Island City discussed the shooting of Join Farmer by police- man Heaney. Contradictory statements have been made in connection with the matter. Farmer, in his ante-mortem statement, says:—I was going up the Ravenswood road when I met Heaney; 1 asked him to come and have a drink; he said he wasn't drinking anything now; [ told him to go to hell; Heaney tried to arrest me and I ran eway; Meaney had iil-feelings against me; he fired four shots at me; the last shot I felt; I foll from*logs of blood; I was taken to Asio- ria ina wagon; I was afterwards taken home ina carriage; Heaney shot me in the back; Ihad no il-feeling against Heaney, nor he against me; was @ little drunk. x Was Compl opposite Solomon B. Noble's. NS PERN oF ot Dr. Denler was ‘omployed by engine company No. 5 to attend Farmer, He says the ball entered the body one inch below the shoulder blade, passing directly through the left lung and imbedding itself in the muscles Of the chest. The Doctor would not probe the wound, believing that such a courso would kill him, while he can live with the ball in the museles of the chest. Farmer's residence has been besieged by visitors, Every calier wants to send 1 now «octor. A gen- tleman for whom Farmer worked sent a doct from Greenpoint, who probed the wound ¢ found the ball six inches from the suri of the back. On Sunday night a pa of partially intoxtea’ men were refused ad tance and they bre open the door, Yesterda: Dr. Denler sid that he would surely die if not al- lowed to remain quiet, and a policeman was atthe door to prevent any one from enterinu. eleven o'clock on Sunday hight a party of Ww sembled for the purpose of rescnin ea the station house and lynching hin: but th rittes had secret Information of thely plans and pre- pared themselves for the emergency, When the nen saw themselves ontnumbered thoy dispersed. Puplic opinion censures Heaney, It is believed to have been an outburst of private mailce, originat- ing from a quit*rel between Heaney's brother and the wounded man, Two gentlemen who witnessed the affair state that Farmer in Solomon BL, Noble's yard and the officer outstde, He checked Heaney‘s shooting and then called Farmer back. When ‘he came near enough Heaney grabbed at hig) head) and Farmer dodged hin Heaney said, “If you run Til — shoot,’ anil as he grabbed again Farmer ran away and Heaney fired, Farmer continued to run until he reached & cornfield, where he fell trom exhaustion, A minute later Heduey came, and Farmer sald, “Have merey on me, I'm shot.’ He was placed in an old jolting Wagon and driven to the station house, Father a ne Crimmins yesterday afternoon administered the | last rites ‘of the Catholic Church to Farmer, Heaney is locked up in the station house, THE SHOOTING OF JAMES SMITH.
