FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ADVANCE IN GOLD TO 11/4. The “Bulls” Cireulate a Rumor of the Rejee- tion in London of the Amended Supplemental Treaty. A SEE-SAW IN THE STOCK MARKET. Pacifie Mail Advances to 76 and Erie Falls to 64. The Subsidy Bill Signed by’ the President. Tho Decline in Erie Ascribed toa Mercenary Offer of the London Protectionists, Stocks Lower All Around, with a Rally at the Close. Governments Firm—South Carolinas Down—Foreign Exchange Up. WALL STRRET, TUESDAY, May 28—6 P. M. On 'Change to-day flour was weak and heavy. The wheat market was also depressed in face of a fairly active demand for export. Cotton was ‘Moderately steady, but exhibited considerable re- action from its recent strength. THE EXPORTS OF THE WEEK. The aggregate exports of domestic merchandise from the port of New York to foreign ports for the week ending May 28, 1872, were $3,702,647. MONEY EASIER, ' The little spasm of activity noticed in money on Monday was not repeated to-day, and the market | reverted to its previous easy condition—that is, the stock ‘™okers were accommodated readily at 6 per cent, anit got a good deal of their money late in the day at as low as6 per cent, the latter rate being the general thing on government collaterals. After accounts had been pretty well made up some lenders appeared to empioy balances, but were un- able to gct better than 4 per. cent from the govern- ment dealers, who took the chance of relending the money more advantageously. Paper was as before quoted, Prime bankers’ acceptances could be done perhaps at 6 per cent. ADVANOR IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE. Tho raising of rates for sterling by one house Jate ‘Monday afternoon was copied by all the leading and so-called “prime” firms to-day, and quotations now stand on the basis of 109% for sixty-day and 110% for sight bills. These are the desk rates, and &re not a large fraction in advance of real business, which, so far as to-day was concerned, continued light. The forejgn bankers are considerably exer- | oised as to the future of the market, and are quite cautious about drawing until the upshot of the Supplemental Treaty negotiations is more dis- cernible. With the undoubted active necessity for SOMETHING TO SHIP to the other side, anew derangement of these ne- gotiations would utterly check the manufacture of exchange from remittances of bonds and securities and throw the importers upon the mercy and re- sources of the foreign bankers. Just at this mo- mont London is steadily selling Erie to New York, 80 that we are poorer off in exchange to the ex- tent of this reimportation of stock. Some one shrewdly said, when the speculators of the United States were selling Eric short at 40 250, that Lon- don would sell us back the stock at 70a 80. Con- Sidering the career of Erie the past few weeks the remark now sounds like proplecy. It is hardly necessary to say that avery happy evangellst is to be found in the vicinity of Broadway and Seven. teenth street. GOLD 113% A 114. The advance in sterling buoyed gold at the high- water mark of Monday, and imparted strength enough to the market to render it readily suacepti- ble ofa further advance of a quarter per cent as soon as a little reaction in our securities in London gave rise to a vague rumor that the Supplemental Treaty, as amended by the United States Senate, had been rejected by the British Cabinet. Indeed, the market was for a spell” decidedly firm at 114, andas much as three millions was taken, buyer three days, by parties supposed to be connectea with the pool and desirous of deferring the trouble of taking care of so much of an addition to the pool supply. With the evening cable telegrams from London came better assurances as to the feli- citous reception of the amended article, which gold reflected In a reaction to 113%, the final sales occurring at 113 15-16. The course of the market is shown in the table:— In the gold loan market the rates ranged from Sper cent for carrying to flat for borrowlng. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as fol- lows:— Gold cleared. Gold balances... Currency balances. The little reaction at the close may also be traced to the lighter slipment on Wednesday, which, a3 estimated late this afternoon, will not exceed $300,000—a sum of about $500,000 being kept over for tho Hamburg steamer of Thursday. A pursu- ance of this consideration leads to the opinion that the week’s shipment will therefore show a marked diminution as compared with last week's, The Sub-Treasury disbursed $443,000 for interest and in redemption of called bonds, GOVERNMENTS STRONG. The government list was strong and to a trifling extent higher, the best selling prices of Monday veing to-day's bid prices, The reaction abroad had no ill effect, for the reason that gold had advanced and because at quotations there were orders enough in the market to hold it against decline. Indeed, the government list seems to be carefully controlled by the gold pool, as @ remote accessory to their more imme- diate plans. Tho following were the closing quotations:—United States currency sixes, 11714 & 117%; do. do., 1891, registered, 117% a 117%; do. do., coupon, 11944 © 119%; do, five-twenties, registered, May and November, 113% a 114; do, do., 1862, coupon, do., 113% a114; do. do., 1864, do. do. 118% a 114; do. do., 1865, do. do., 115 a 1154; do. do,, 1867, registered, January and July, 11634 a 46% ; do, do,, 1865, coupon, do., 11634 a 116%; do. do., 1867, do. do., 117% a 11744; do. do., 1868, do, do., 1174 @ 117%; do. fives, of 1881, funded, registered, 112% @ 113; do, do., coupon, 112% a 113; do. ten- forties, registered, 11134 a 111%; do. do., coupon, 112 8 112%. SOUTHERN SECURITIES DULL. The Southern State bonds were less active, with some specialties heavy, The Tennessees fell off a trifle at the boards, but closed strong, The South Carolinas were weak and declined one per cent on advices from Columbia asserting that the Legisla- ture, despite the earnest agitation of the financial question, had neglected to make provision for pay- ing the interest on the bonded debt. STOOKS LESS ACTIVE AND LOWER. A duller feeling pervaded the stock market, and the business of the day was chiefly concerned with Pacific Mail and Erie. The wrangle in Pacific Mail occasions 80 many and so wide fluctuations that the professional class of speculators are quite en- chanted with the numerous opportunities offered for rapid and profitable terms afforded by it if only rightly “struck.” To-day the “bulls” had the best of the contest—thanks to their early intelligence from Washington that the President had signed the Postal Appropriation bill—thereby making full law and putting beyond peradventnre the increased subsidy for the Pacific Ocean mail service, Per contra, and as if to console tho “beara” in Pacific, a strange and active weakness took possession of Erie and lowered It from 68 to 63%. The London market was credited with be- ginning the “break,” but the lowest point reached at the close on the other side was hardly below the equivalent of 66, so that the further deeline here was an extra performance on the part of the American actors of tho Erie drama. It was, doubtless, a concentrated ope- ration to achieve the general purposes of the formidable “bear” combination now working against the market, although one rumor had it that the decline was to be attributed to a reported singular offer from the controlling parties in Eng- land to sell the election for a million and a half of dollars to any party here wishing the administra- tion of the road. What with the rise in Pacific and the fall in Erie the rest of the market was unsettled and divided in its sympathetic tendenctes, now falling the one and anon the other, the general result being, however, rather against the ‘bulis,” particularly near the close, when Northwest declined to 73, Central to 97, Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central to 3876 and Union Pacific to 39, The injunctions against Pacific Mail occasioned little discussion, and were disregarded so far as they influenced speculation in the stock. An upward turn to 85 in Quicksilver and a temporary drop to 7 for Boston, Hartford and Erie were incidents inan otherwise tame move- ment. The sudden death of Mr. Dimock, President | of the Atlantic Mail Steamship Company, involved no evil consequences to the stock, which was only | quoted once during the day, viz., at 31. A. V. DIMOCK. An active Wall street spirit has disappeared in the death of Mr. A.V. Dimock, President of the Atlantic Mail Steamship’ Company, and chief mem- ber of the stock brokerage firm of Dimock, Myers & Co. Mr. Dimock left New York at the usual hour after business on Monday and died suddenly, nay, instantly, as the train was journeying with him to his home at Elizabeth. His comrages in the car were for a time under the belief that his sudden inanition was simply a fainting ft and applied the usual restoratives for such a contin- gency, but were inexpressibly shocked soon after to discover that death was real and not counterfeited. The deceased, though a young man, only thirty-seven years—his death, by a singular coincidence, occurring on his birthday, had been concerned toa gigantic extent in real estate and stock investments, and was the leading capitalist in building the city of Elizabeth, his speculation in the lands to which that city has of late years expanded returning him enormous pro- fits. His dealings in the stock of Atlantic Mail were less fortuitous, but his steady income from his real estate at Elizabeth kept hima rich man throughont and provides handsomely for his wife and family now that he has gone.
