British Banquet to the American Oarsmen—From Ainper In Liverpool Liverpool to Putney Amid a Genial Demonstration. TELEGRAM TO Tie WEW YORK HERALD. —Tonpon, April 26, 1872 The Atalanta Boat Club crew were entertal™ + esterday by the “me ate at the London Rowing Club, who “ups Pipe ies < ee esis to the care ane 4.” “if corted their gues an" the whole party started for Putney. between Liverpool and p, and, by salutes and? evidence of their", a 3 ‘gathered at the stations ‘they as the train passed, aber al display of bunting, gave desire to wecord the strangers & Large crowds of persor waria welcome | THE ANGLO -AMERICAN BOAT RACE. ‘The Atala’ ava Crew and the Four of the London Rowing Club—Achicvements of the © atter Crew—The Boat Clubs of the T pames. ' from the London Telegraph, April 15.) Ont Ac veth-of June next the Thames, from Put- bey ¢o Mortlake, will again bo the scene of an in- termational rowing match between representative Crews of England and the United States of America, In February-lust a challenge was received by the London Row ing Club from the Atalanta Rowing Club in New Yor?; to row a four-oared race on the metro- poatitan rive x, Americans —who may not unreasonably be presumed to have wt shed to retrieve the defeat of Harvard by Oxford—v yas readily taken up by the chief Thames club, and abitity, Accor? ing to latest advices the American four left New on Saturday, coun (ry about twelve days lator, ‘The cartel thus thrown down by the the result is that the race will, in all prob- take place on the date already stated, York in the City of Brooklyn steamer and may be expected in this Communica- tou’ ; have been opened with Mr. Marshall, of the Fox ore and Hounds Hotel, Putney, where the Oxford Ww put up during their training, and it seems not W probable that the American gentlemen may accept that “location” during their stay at head- quarters. The four members of the Atalanta who have been selected to do battle for America, in this instance, are Edward Smith (bow) ; No. 2, Theodore Van Raden; No. 3, James O'Neill, and Russell Withers (stroke). They will bring with them as extra men Messrs. L. Waterbury, A. Handy, and H. B. Leroy. The London four will, in all probability, consist of F. S, Guiston, Ryan, Stout and Long, with Routh and Smith to fail back upon. Stout will pall Btroke; Gulston, at No. 2, will steer the boat by an apparatus of his own invention, which seems to possess the merit of greater simplicity than the American appliances or of Taylors’ English patent. Both boats will be rowed without coxswains, Little is as yet known tn this country of the mer- Its of the Atalanta crew, but certain it is that oflate ears Our cousins across the Water have been turn- i their attention seriously to the cultivation and penprovemient of rowing as an athletic exercise, hg ago some of the older practitioners, whose james were famous on the rivers of England, set- tled in the United States, and of course took over with them their native predilection for the English style of rowing. More recently, international Matches between Englishmen and Americans have still further epyead the desire in America to prac- tice and excel in boat racing. Among themselves— that is at American regattas—the Atalanta four aro pre-eminent, and have latterly carried off pretty nearly all they have competed for. The ‘loca- tion” of their club is on the Hudson River, at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken, N. J., where they have a course of three miles. Frequent}, the races are rowed over six miles, the boats having to turn buoy and return over the same course. The Atalanta clnb was organized in May, 1848, and now umbers ninety-five members—a very small muster, will be seen, in comparison with the strength of the ‘hames clubs. Mr. Ranson Parker js president and r. Russell Withers captain, The London Rowin; Club, which has now something like four hundre and twenty members, has been in existence since 1856, and is jay regarded as the leading metro- m organization. Mr. James Layton, now 74 ears of age, a noted oarsiman in his time, fills the Office of president; Mr. F. 8. Gulston, the captain, is not merely a first class rower, but is, in fact, as a eaptain should be, an excellent representative of the strength and spirit of the club. An erroneous gotion seems to have obtained in New York that the London consists, to a considerable extent, of past university oarsmen. The fact is, that all but @ small tiinority are men ‘of — business, eolicitors, doctors, professional men, or men en- ed in the City, who are glad to take advantag of the facilities of the London for an oceasional pull ‘on the river, Mr. Guiston is a Cambridge man, and there are other university men fn the club, but gone, we believe, who ever pulled in the Oxford ‘and Gambridge match. A notion—eqnally as far re- moved from fact as the American idea—seems to prevail nearer home to the effect that the university crews are the best that appear on the Thames, Performances show that the London Club takes a higher degree; and it is more th doubtful whether, if an Oxford or Cambridge eight camo against As many first class trained watermen, the entiemen would be able to hold theirown, The Eonaon has just now the best amateur eight and the best four in the country. They hold the Stew- erds’ Cop from Henley, and also the metro- politen fours. Of the doings of the crew whose Games figure against the Atalanta, the carrying o1f of the Steward’s Cup at Henley from old Btoniana, comprisin house, rank as one of their best exploits, they beat four University men—namely, Tinié, Kowman and Hall, “They have won prize all the principal regattas in the kingdom, 1 King’s Lynn, Walton, Barnes, Mortlake, ¥ and Whitechurch. Stout and Long won t Henley in 1869, Long and Gulaton carrie] olf prize last year. Stout ha pion scatter, and same year. Long was champion twi the tiird time. Ryan has also ship. The London four vel crew, ranging in weight from 10st. 10lbs. to Frat. lbs.” Although the London stands at the bevad of the Thames Clubs, and has recently built for itself a commodious clubhouse, which, without BQn,v pretence to finery, is in Its Way an ornament to the banks of the river in that quarter of Putney, the: ‘e are several other clubs of note in the metro- \ an river that can send out formidable boa Ene 1 eee though not #0 large as the Londo In_ 1863 Wood, at ap th ac lubof high note, The Ino stands next. The ham es Club won the Wy/fold fours. Then there are th ¢ Leander, the West London and the North Londo, 2 Rowing Clubs, and at present tn dally trainin, g are four eights from a Printers’ Clab, the respect, ‘ve boats being manned by compositors from the oMi 2e8 of four of the metropolitan daily news- papers. There is, in fact, a succession of boating corteric¢! from Wandsworth all the way ue to Kingston, and there are few prettier sights in aquatics than when on @ Saturday afternoon the broad sur face of the river is studded with the boats of all the rowing clubs, It is true that to the prac- tised eye t here is often considerable want of form among the juniors, which is rendered all the more conspicuou $ by the appearance of the crews in flan- neis{nstea¢ | of mufti; but this is not for lack of better examples, ¢nd may be expected to improve with time and as, the juniors grow older. In selecting the present four Mr, Guiston will be entitidd to {the confidence of all who take an in- terest dn the, race, It may be that, before or after the evant, people will say that a change might have been made with ‘advantage; but this would be said in any case, and may be esti- mated cveordingly. The London has many advan- tages in having \a large number of qualified oarsmen to select from, in the training under the eyes of ex- riencec! coaches, and in comp ats of tie day; \and it will be strange ind if the smaile t clubs ol Greater Britain can send over a crew that shall plck the lau away from the chief Tham. *8 men o\ their native river.” Still, it is an clement in the Qase that in the international centests whi ch have tyaken place in the past between Englishmen a La Amer\'cans the former have not al- ways had ital! their Own way. ‘The first match of the kind was t) \at between Marry Kelley and Maraill, of Pennsylvani.\, Which, took be on the Tyne, at Newcastle, i.1 July, i800, Here Kelley, looking the picture of'a complete wsculler, rowed right away from Hamill, who Was shqrtin stroke, deticient tn reach and inadequately trained. in 1867 the Cana- dian crew, at the Paris Rega tla, won the fours both for inrigged and outtigged boats, but, Inasiauch as they carried no coxsyvain, they were virtually re- colving eight stone from the other boats engaged, On the 27th of August, 1869, the\ Oxford and Ha natch took place on the Thames, before the biggest crowd ever known at a boat race, and wos won by Oxford, In September, 1870, Renforth went from Newcastle across the Atl@utic, aud beat the Paris four on the Kennebecassis River, New Brunswick, Whe following year, while pwling .'n Canada, Ren- forth Was scized with mortal {Uness iin the boat and the Tyne crew was defeated, A match was at one time arranged between Joseph Sadie, Of Surbiton, and Walter Brown, a crack Ainertean souiler, but at the last Brown backed out of it and the race did not come oi, Later Brown rowed Sawe't’s younger brother Willlam and beat him, At #e Interna- tional Regatta at Halifax, Nova Scotia, in is7l, Taylor's Newcastle erew carricl of @ prize, culls, beating Kelley’ aud Brown. av, al the Saratoga Spri.ige Regatta, turned on the Pnglishm.%, the cele Ward brothers, Americans, beat Percy’s jagnall’s crews from Newcastle o Ver a four Sadier won the # In the same y the tables wer brate course. ‘The boat the Wards rowed Jn was ed the Dunston, the s no which Revsorth’s W had won the year preceding, aud which was bought by them for £70, Prom these returns 1% jill be secon that the knglish boats have never Len Yeaten by the Americans on English rivera, awl that 1) ricans have still a considerable #CORe of vietorivs to wipe off, .
