This Afternoon’s Proceedings, Sarurpay, April 27. SENATE.—Mr. Sumner presente? preamble and resolutions adopted at a meeting held in the city of Washington, asking the passage of his bil! to secure equal rights in the comuron schools of Washington and Georgetown. Mr. Sumner then asked to take up his bill, but Mr. Jobnson objected. Mr. Pomeroy cailed up bill to confirm the title of the occupants of the Cherokee strip in Kansas. - Mr Hamilton, of Texas, opposed the bill, and said that it provided for the sale of these lands without consulting the Indians to whom they belonged. ‘The bill was then passed. The untinished business, being the deficiency appropriation bill, then came up. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.—On motion of Mr. Dawes, (Mass.,) it was ordered that on and after Monday the House meet at eleven a. m. until otherwise ordered. Mr. Sargent (Cal.) rose to A PERSONAL EXPLANATION in relation to the Press dispatches trom Califor- nia in relation to the Goat Island bill. He said that these dispatches were wholly unreliable. and that the one from thence in relation to the burning of himself and colleague in effigy was untrue, as shown by an investigation. He read telegrams from parties in his state to show that the dispatches misrepresented the senti- ments of the people, and said that, although a portion of the people of San Francisco opposed it, he felt sure that should the bill become a law a year will show that it was of incalculable ad- vantage to the city of San Francisco. Mr. Niblack, (Ind.) from the Appropriation Committee. reported a bill to authorize the See- retary of the Treasury to pay to the owners of cotton illegaily sold, the proceeds of the same; which red printed and recommitted. Mr. Clagett (Montana) introdaced a pill to authorize the shipment of 500 Spencer carbines and 100,000 rounds of ammunition to the gov- ernor of Montana, to be used for the protection ofthe inhabitants of the Galatin Valley, and asked immediate action.
