» AQUATIC. Whe National Amateur Regatta of the Schuylkill Navy—The Course Sclected— The Proposed Prizes and tho Clubs that ‘Will Probably Enter for the Several Races. ‘The National Amateur Regatta, to come off in Yone at Philadelphia, under the management of the Schuylkill Navy, is to be held on the Schuylkill, be- ‘tween the Falls bridge and Columbia bridge, the eourse being from bridge to bridge and return. The spot is within the limits of Fairmount Park, con- venient of access from the city, and the rising ground on either side of this portion of the river farnishes excellent stand points from which the eye may follow the races from start to close. A Place more sulted to the purpose could hardly be Sound, It is expected that each of tne following cds of ‘the Schuylkill Navy will enter for one or more of ‘the several races:—The Undine, University, Quaker Oity, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Malta and Cres- cent. The West Philadelphia Club contemplate en- tering for the six-oared gig race. In regard to prizes the proposition now Is to give |, ghandeome cup of appropriate design as a prize for each crew race, and in addition a commemora- ‘tion medal to prey member of each winning crew. For the double, pair-oar and single shell races there to be indivi val obey ormne well-known er sca) of Yonkers, N. Y., have signified to the Se uylkill Ni ay their intention to enter for the following race: ‘ingle shell, four- oared shell and six-oared gig, and have named the fol- Jewing crews and substitutes :—For the single shell, ‘Thomas Fearon; substitute, J, H. Keeler. For the four-oared shell—Stroke, John’ H. Keeler; Wiiliam MeFarlan, Owen Van Winkle, and T. Fearon, bow; eudstitute, Howard Flagg. For the six-oared outrig: gig the six above nated ; substitutes, Benjamin fiason and Wilbur H. Flagg. This arrangement is, ef course, anbject to modi ication prior to May 16, when the entries are to be closed. Rumors have been received, and it is hoped will soon be authoritatively confirmed, that the Nassau lub, of New York, will enter for several of the races, and that the well-known oaramen, Messra, Losec and Swan, are to contend for the double shell prizes. ‘The regatta is be strictly what its name im- por ‘amateur ;"’ and the better to assure this and prevent the possible cre eping in of pro- fessionals unawares the names of the different crews entered from various quarters are to be si i eae thus giving opportunity to all concerned for the presenting and consideration of ‘ebjections. At a recent meeting of the representatives of the boat clubs of the District of Columbia it was re- solved to have a grand national regatta on the Potomac River in June or July. They propose, by offering handsome and sultablé prizes, to bring’ to- gether the most skilfl and accomplished oarsmen of the country, embracing professional as well as amateur crews, and expect to have present and partich en in the regatta the most celebrated erews from the British Provinces, CITY GOVERNMENT.
