The wheat trade has been restricted to@light movement on both domestic and foreign account. Cotton, pursuing the reaction consequent on the recent failures, was on the downward turn, but has been steadier and rather firmer since the Publication of private accounts from the cotton re- gions giving less flattering promises of an extended crop. Moreover, the deciine in gold has entered as an important element in regulating prices, and dealers nave been so unsettled in their views by these several circumstances that they have nelther bought nor sold with any confidence or freedom. THE WEEK IN WALL STREET. ‘The Wall street markets have shown light returns 1m the way ef actual business, and little nas been done by others than the professional speculators ‘Who live from day to day by quick operations for small profits. The outside interest in stocks con- tioues to hold aloof in consequetice of the peraist- ‘ent stringency in the money market—a condition ‘Usually so antagonistic to speculation for @ rise ‘which has been wholly disregarded by the profes- sional class whose ampition for higher prices has ‘been gratified mm an exceedingly agrecable way. “The stock market started off mervously after tho Previous weex’s bank failures, like @ sbip rudely handled by a rough gale, bat. soon succeeded tn re- gaining the smooth water of a rising current, The timid, who had .peen apprehensive of fartaer stress of weather, provided themseives with LIFE PRESERVERS Im the shape.of ‘pute’? from, Mr, Daniel Drew, who statement compares with its predecessor as fol. Nas indulged what might be called ® mania for the sale ot these contracta ever since the Chicago fire, and-who with them has done more than any other single influence to occasion the steady rise in prices of the past two months. He is sald to be responsible for the delivery io him im this way of nearly twenty-five milion dollars of Rock Island, Northwest, Ohio and various other stocks, while the numerous “put” sellers of the street, including Mr. Drew, are responsible for @ total of hardly less than fifty million dollars of the leading active speculative railway and miscellaneous shares. Fortifiea with these contracts operations on the “bull” side during the week have been quite confl- dent, the final.quotatious Saturday evening snow- ing a smart advance in pretty nearly everything, and especially in the stocks underlaid with MR. DREW'S “PUTS.” Indeed, for most of the list tne prices reached towards the close of business. on the sidewalk, where a large group remaued till @ late nour, de- spite the home attractions of Christmas Eve, were the highest since the Chicago panic. SOUTHERN SECURITIES, The Southern state vonds were excited, lower end weak, owing to the fact that the Legislature of Virginia has enacted measures for stopping the re- fanding of the debt and tne payment of the January interest, although such action may yet be defeated ‘by the Governor's voto, anticipation of i eiat caused a rally of nt in’ the on i to's4. THB COURSE OF THB GOLD MARKET. ‘The extreme fluctuations datty tm the price of gold during the week ware as follows.— THE BANK STATRMENT. The Weekly statement of the associated banks is one of (ue most important, nos sensational, emite fed from the Clearing House in 8 good while, To udderstand It the fact snould be borne fn mind thas since the failure of the Union square and’ Kighth National Banks, which were not members of ttie Clearing House, but cleared through their friends in the association, the justice of confining the state- ment to members of the Clearing House only has been urged with such force that the suggestion has been adopted, and five uptown banks are omitted in. this week's statement. The banks thus excluded report the following averages last week:— Loans. + $4,533,700 pees 45,100 egal “ Deposit Chroutation. The statement to-day varies, theretore, by the ex. ‘raotion of the above figures from the varions items, but the changes im addition are quite marked and large. In loans the total contraction is nearly twelve million dollars, while the toss in deposits is over eighteen millions. Aithough the Sub-Treasury as patd out several millions on account of the re- deemed '62's, there is a loss of nearly three millions in specie, accounted for, probably, by the payment of subscriptions to the new five per cents, delayed to this time by the Syndicate, who appear to nave been allowod their own pleasure in everything per- taining to the negotiation of the new five per cent loan, Outaide of the loss in greenbacks by the ex- clusion of the uptown banks there is a decrease in this 1tem of nearly three miilions, indicating a heavy flow of currency to the interior. Despite their im- mense efforts in the way of contraction the banks are not as strong as they were last week, the surplus reserve being now down to seven millions, The lows:— December 16. December 28, $288,179,700 $271,383, 000. 25,751,000 22,764,700 29,083,800 28,574,600 217,891,300 199,346,700 44,632,400 4,217,800 The changes being as follo' Decrease in loans $11,796,700 2,086,300 xe 5utveo0 3,314,600 An analysis of the above shows that the banks now hold in surplus reserve the sum of $7,001,925— @ decrease for the week of $1,550, 200. LIVINGSTONE. Mr. John Kirk, Acting Political Agent and Ser Majesty's Consul at Zanzibar, has forwarded. we following items of intelligence to the Secretary te Government, dated ZANZIBAR, Sept, 22, 187t. Tam Proaebted to Mr. Webb, the American Consul bere, for some details related im those letters, which will no doubt be pub- lished in full elsewhere. « Briefly, the position is tnis:—The Arab colony es the imterior, whose centre is Unyanyembe, haa for some time been led by a ct of avaricious, unprinct- plea men, whose acts of extortion, both om natives and the poorer Arabs, have ior some time back beer complained of to Syed Burgash, wo 1s Ampolaaets interfere at such @ distance go long as shings well for the Arabs. A chief, Whose village wi jay’s journey distant on the mata road to Ujijf and Soar fell under the displeasure of the Unyan- yembe settlers, and nis place was attacked in due course by & force of about 1,600 muskets. Seemg that he could not hold the stockaded village ne re- tired with his foHowers and formed au ambush the return of the attacking party woen laden ivory and other booty. The result. was disastrous to the Arabs, and a great many were kliled, inctuding ten or twenty of the leader’s men of (amily here, The Arab retreat soon became # root, And much property was jost. Fortunately Mr. ‘Who Was Weak and ill from fear, managed to return to Unyanyembe, but he was abandoned by the Arab3, who © conduct he speaks of as cowardly 1m the extreme. Such is the constant state of things in Central Africa, The road to Ujiji will now be shut for» me, and when we may again hear of Dr. Living- stone is most uncertain.
