OBITUARY. Capticin William A. Howard, United Atatce Revenue Marine. The above named oicer died at the Vilage or Greenport, L. L, on the 18th inst., after enduriny a severe illuess of a few months’ duration, Ht was captain in the United States Revenue Marine, and heid the commission of colonel of the Thirteenth regiment of New York artillery, United States Volunteers, during the war, Captain, Howard was a distinguished oiicer, a man who spent a very active Iife. Before entering Use navy he distin- guished himself ax a lad by leading au expedition to cut out and rescue an Amertcan vessel from the British authorities, The vessel was seized by the Eugush for intvmging the Fishery laws, At the age of seventeen he entered the United Staves Navy. In 1828 he resigned Nis commission in the navy to re- ceive a appointed to the command at the age of twenty-one. Ifis services were successful in saving and assisting vessels In distress on the coast of New England, in appreciation of which the merchants of Boston pre- sented jum with a valuable service of silver. 1848 the German Confederacy app he there constructed @ navy yard and dock, and remained in charge until the breaking up of the feet. At the commencement of the late American war Captain Howard raised a regiment of marine artillery, which was attached to the Barnside expedition. He asked for two weeks, which request was refused.
