DANGER TO AMERICAN CITIZENS — PROMPT ACTION BY OUR GOVERNMENT. Late advices received by the government from Cuba indicate that serious difficulties are liable to occur at any moment, and thaf the lives and property of Americans on that island are not sate. The Spanish officials have shown an in- difference in protecting Americans residing there, in consequence of tehich our citizens have been maltreated by the Cuban volunteers, and the —— are that attempts will be made e volunteers to drive them from the islan:. ‘The condition of affairs has been made known to the Spanish anthoritice a at Madrid by our gov- ernment, but nothii —_ d fair promises have been made by nish vernment. A dispatch from our ( =e General at Hay: yesters stated that immediate tection wa needed for American citizens. The matter was therefore before the Cabinet yesterday, and an order was given that all the vessels of the North Atlantic fleet should rendezvous immediately at Havana, to be ready for any emergency. A tel- egram was sent to Key West for the double- turreted monitor Terror, at that place, to proceed at once to Havana, and it is thought she arrived there to-day. Rear Admiral Lee, in command of the North Atlantic fleet, had a lengthy consultation with Secretary Robeson yesterday, and this morning he le*t here for Boston, where he will join the Worcester, and proceed at once to Havana. The Worcester will be used as his flag-ship tempo- rarily during the repairs to the Severn. It is stated that Admiral Lee has instructions to bring the guns of his fleet to bear upon the city of Ha- vana in case any injury is done by the inhabitants of the Island to American citizens residi le The vessels of the North Atiantic fleet ser- vice are the Terror, Kansas and Nipsic. The Severn and Swatara are undergoii irs, but the Shawmut, recently fitted out lor’ e South Atlantic fleet, has been ordered to temporary duty with the hey Atlantic fleet. Other ves- sels which ean be gotten ready for sea without delay will be fitted out to reinforce the fleet. It is believed that Minister Sickles was ordered home for a conference with the President and Secretary of State in regard to the troubles, and that his visit to this country is not one of pleas ure, but in pursuance of orders. The di is regarded as a serious one, and the govern- ment is fully warranted in taking these steps for the protection of our citizens. 202 Too MANY Inons IN THE Frre.—The Peace Society of Pennsylvania held its sessions in Philadelphia last week, and their patch-work platform is a curiosity in its way. Resolutions were adopted denouncing wars, fighting, armies and navies, and favoring the policy of non- resistance to every oppression. They further propose to bring about the millennium by re- pealing the “ war eclanses” of the Constitution and restricting the sale of deadly weapons, This is all silly enough, because utterly impracticable; but the convention traveled out of its way to tackle other social problems, and announced itself as opposed to capital punishment for the commission of erime; in favor of universal suffrage for men and women; opposed to the use and sale cf intoxicating liquors, and in favor of a prohibiiory law. These pace men make the same m‘stake as most “reformers,” who think that !aws can be framed to effect all sorts of social and political changes. Their concep- tion of government, if carried out, would be the what they shall eat, drink, and wear, and even what they shall feel and think. Every year. through the efforts of demagogues, laws are Placed upon the statute books had a party, and the party wanted oysters, and TELEGRAMS T TO ) THE ‘STAR, This Afternoon’s Dispatches, ASSOCIATED PR.
