Firm atthe Threshéld of Death, His Last Speech Denouneing His Judges and Accusers. TOWSENTOWN, Baltimore Oounty, Md., Sept. 29, 1871, Towsentown is the county seat of Baltimore ‘Tounty, and is an antquated-looking village of about Diteen hundred invabitauts. It 18 one of tne oldest, towns in the State of Maryland, and is surrounded by an agricuitural region noted for tts wealth ana fertility, It has to-day been the scene of much busy bustle and excitement. The town has been fail of people of all ages, sexes and conditions ever since eariy morning, gathered to witness the execution of William Henry Pritchard, a colored man, who ‘Was bung here to-day for the heinous crime of out- raging a young German girl named Mary Sendel. THE CRIME. The facts in relation to the commission of the crime and the circumstances surrounding it, as de- veloped by the evidence given upon the trial, shows that one night about the middle of August, 1870, Pritchard asa a companion named Palmer, much older than himself, had escorted two girls of their wn color from a social gathering at the house of a colored man named Dickson, Uving in Baltimore county, abont ix mules from Baltimore city, to their homes, on what is Known as the Trappe road. After leaving the girls the boys for some reason did not go home, but loitered along the road, and two o'clock A, M. found them walking along the highway in the direction of Baltimore city. On the outskirts of the city toward which these boys were approaching sive Many poor people, who, in thé berrying season, Walk ont the oid Trappe road to gather berries, and on the morning aliuded to Mary Sendel; accompanied by her aged grandfather, left her home about one o'clock forthe purpose of gathering blackberries, ‘They left at this early hour that they might fll ther baskets and retarn home in time to escape the ex- cessive heat of midday. The girl and her aged companion had got about five mules from the city when they met Pritchard and his companion. ‘The boys spoke to thei friendly, giving the usual sab od morning,” and then suddenly and without @ moment's warning attacked the old mau abd Knocked him down. When he could regain himself he started in the direction of Balti. More, running as for nis life. ‘The rest of the story 1s soon told, THE YOUNG AND INNOCENT GIRL, who had vainly tried to escape while the attack Was being made upon the old gentleman, was over- taken and made the victim of the brutal lusts of both Pritchard and ms companion, Palmer. When'they bad gratified their brutal passions they leit the poor girl by the roadside and ran away, She, as best she could, made her way to a farm house near by, half dead with fright and the injnries she had received, waked the mmates up, aad to the house wile i RELATED THE FEARFUL STORY of wrongs done her virtue that will fill her whole life with unutterable sorrow and woe. The noble Woman into whose cars she poured the story of the dreadful crime listened with womanly afection to her simple recitation and at once took such stepS a8 were necessary to relieve her bodily sufferings, while her husband 4munediately started in pursuit of the youthful villains, and the next day they were arrested, taken to Towsentown and lodged in jail. They were both ammediately indicted for the hemous offence, bat for some reasom the cases were postponed over two terms of court, and Palmer broke jail and escaped. Pritchard’s counsel moved his case to Baltimore city, where it came up for trial at the March term, 1871, of we Criminal Court, and resulted in his being CONVICTED AND SENTENCED TO DEATH. After eS had been sentenced he was re- moved to the jail at Towsentown, where he has tince remained. For some time past there have been great efforts made by a large number of influential people to have Privchard’s sentence commuted to imprisonment for Mfe. Jt was thought by a great nuiuber that he was controlled entirely by Palmer, who was much older, and fuliy shown to have been the principal actor, the first to make the proposition and the first to comuut the outrage. Pritchard's youth was also strongiy urged as a reason why he Should not ve hanged, ‘The pressure upon Goveruor bowie on behall of Pritchard was very great in- deed, and @lmost continuous since his DEATH WARRANT WAS ISSUED, but the Governor Partog f refused to interfere, and On the 26th inst sent the following letter in reply to the last appeal in his denaif, giving bis reasons for Dot interfering with the sentence of the Court:— CoLLInaton Post Orriog, Sept. 26, BS Biey dri : 2 sch paperipen EAR SIR—Your appeal in behalf of Pritchard was received by last mail Iregret that I cannot feel justified in Feaponding favorably. One evening when engaged in his usual fray with the “spirits” a circumstance occurred that put an end to his attempts at spiritual mant- festations. He was as usual es with the bench, one evening about nine o'clock, when. A TERRIFIC SCREAM WAS HEARD Inthe cell occupied by the colored prisoner, Warden, supposing that some were trying to escape, seized his revolver and ran down stairs. It must have been to hima errible day; he could disiinctiy bear the workmen engaged in. ‘erecting the scaffold upon which le was to end this life in a few short hours. His spiritual adviser was with him most of the day, coat and directing his thoughts to- ward preparation for THE CERTAIN DOOM that awaited him. Towara evening, when Rey. Mr. Hoi left him, his father catied ana took his last farewell, The scene that ensued during this inter- view between parent and child is described by the guard as “a most efeciing scene.’ THe ate littic eupper last night, and seemed restless and nervous after his father bad gone. He ofien calied the guard and desired w converse Wilh him, and seemed vo DREAD TO BE ALON. As the shades of night began to thicken this fecling seemed to manifest ttseif more and more, until ine ‘uards were obligea to refuse to converse with him ‘or fear of distracting lis mind from preparation for lis awlot doom, As the night alvanced the scene inside this wretched boy's cell is described as ex- ceedingiy touching. He would cry and pray and beg to be forgiven his sins, aud would jump from oue side of his ceil to the other, evidently NEARLY GRAZED BY THE THOUGHTS that crowded themselves upon his brain with fearful rapidity. At last wearied nature sought repose, and sleep, that balm that soothes the achin; brain and wipes out for a time the knowledge ol Wuat awaits us, came t his eyes, and about twelve o'clock he sank upon his ride couch and slept his last sieep before that one long continuous sleep tiat knows no waking. About five o'clock tus morming he awoke an? immediately resumed HUS PREPARATION FOR DEATH.
