It 1s thought by some of the officials here, who are @ a postiion to form an intelligent opinion upon the subject, that Major Hodge, to meke such reparation ashe now can to those who are placed in an uude- werved situation of embarrassment and ceusure Snrough their unwavering confidence in his integ- wily, will enter the piea of gullty upon his arraign- ment before the court martial, and thus forestalling the nevessity of the introduction of any evidence in behalf of the government, suppress the possible @isclosures of the extent of the confidence ‘and friendship enjoyed by himself, to the disregard ef law, regulations, cvstom and the ordinary safe- guards of financial trusts and transactions, In this eonnection the following extract from the digest o1 the opinions of tne Judge Advocate General, the guthoritative manual of military Courts, will be svad with interest:— It ts 8 general role of law that where the accused —< Guilty no testimony upon the merits 18 to be troduced, but it 18 believed to be esseutial to a Proper administration of justice in the majority of eases tried by military courts that the prosecution should offer evidence of the circumstances of the effence, notwithstanding the plea of guilty has been. Grand Attendance of Spectetors—The “Argo- nautas” the Winners—Bergen Point Joy- ful Over the Maiden Victory of Their Pet Oaremen. For ten days or longer Bergen Point has been con- siderably excited over tne anucipated six-oarea gig Tace between their pet oarsmen of the Argonauta Rowing Association aiid the crew of the Oneida Cluo, of Jersey City. The residents and sojourners of this lovely retreat on the Kill Von Kull even forgot in their musings over this meeting of the great aquatic victory of the gallant Ward Brothers on Saratoga Lake, and did litue cise in their leisure moments but talk oar, the Argonauta’s and Oneida's cars, and wondered if the lads of Jersey City could possibly pull a better oar than their favorites, Many men, women and children indulged in these specu- lations, and as early as Monday might the young girls of the village and of the La Tourette House went t@ bed with red ribbon in their hair for curl paper to testify tncir love and admira- tion Jor the working members of the “‘Argeys.’? It is presumed the Oneldas had equaily the same sym- pathy extended to them on the part of the fair ladies of Jersey City; but as it was not noticed to be so demonstrative itis fair to assume the Argonautas were the more favored in tins respect. ‘These amateurs of Bergen Point have been rowing on the sheet of water at their teot since June last, and, of anambitious turmef mind, pnt themselves under the care and discipline of the clear-neaded Ellis Ward, and, with attention to his teachings, to day are fair oarsmen for gentlemen who naturally cannot devote but litte time to the amusement. ‘They nave pleasant quarters, and all else that an association of its character can desire, With ali this they have been uplucky, and, if common report 18 irue; lost every race they have pulied. Yesterday, however, there was & change, and, quite easily, they Scored @ deserving victory over their bright-eyed opponents. ‘Whe race was made in response to the Onelda’s challenge, and, as usual with amateurs, was for a set of colors, The eourse selected was from a stuke- boat of the lighthouse at the entrance to Newark Bay, thence to the end of the New Brighton dock, straight away, @ distance of three miles. Tne time named was four o'clock; but uaforvunately, like many other contests of its character, it was two hours later before they were sent away, and the finish was made with the moon and stars snining boldly above the heads of contestants and specta- tors. Young in years are all the members of the two crews, the oldest vemg tn the Argonautas, and Ne but twenty-tnree years of age. In the matter of prepa- ration the Oncidas evidently had the worst of it, as (heir condition was interior to their more lusiv op- ponents. <A glance at the appended tables will give an excellent idea of the respective crews:— THE ARGONAUTAS, Weight Yesterdays 146 Weight Juie le 150 a0 Nameand Position. .
