HEAVY FAILURE IN COLUMBUS, IND, {From th® Indianapolis Journal, Sept. 1.) We learned last evening, both from correspond- ents and personal Interviews with gentlemen {rom Columbus, that great exciement exists in that tegion over the failure of the brim of McLwen & Sons, who have been heretofore iooked upon as the wealthiest men in Haitholomew county, In addi. uon to their regular banking house they carried on a heavy juinber, turning and grain business, and so firm a hold had they upou the confidence of the people that an unusvally heave line of deposits were constantly received at the bank. For some time past mt has been noticed, however, that the banking house had almost to- tally ceased discounting the best paper, and ww ‘has since transpired that te money de- posited was used in outside speculations. As Uhese turned out unfortunately a disastrous failure, which carries with it ruin into many housenolds, was (le inevitable retult, We appead the following letter from our regular correspondent at Columbus, Ing it With the statement that we are informed he is in noerror with regard to the assets of eider Mckwen and the losses of the officials meutioned:— “Messrs. McEwen & Sons, bankers of Columbus, suspended paymeat on the 30th August. Their abtities are not Known, but are generally supposed to be very heavy, some estimates being as Nigh a8 $000,00). THE AURRICANE IN THE WEST INDIES 8t. Thomas Supposed To Be the Centre—Fearfw) Loss of Life and Property—Damage to Shipping. Taomas, Augnst 22, 1871. On Sunaay, the 21st, at about seven P. M,, it be- gan to blow from the north, and continued quite a gale till one A. M. of the 22d. There was then a lull, and Monday morning came calm and pleasant, At about ten A. M. it commenced to blow again, but steadily, and little fear was shown. The barometer had only fallen about three lines; the wind coutinu- ing, however, stores were closed and houses barred up. Upto one o'clock the wind was steadily blow- ing ‘rom north-northeast and the barometer still up. At that hour the glass commenced to drop and the gale broke in all its fury, ‘Tiles, shingles and zine Were scattered to the winds and floods of water poured into the houses, About two o'clock the wind shifted to the northwest, and again due west, the mercury still falling. At four P, M. the wind had got around to east-southeast, and still blew with unabated tury. Ata quarter to five P. M. the wind suddenly ceased, and for three-quarters of an hour there wa3a perfectiull, ‘To an observer then the destruction was tearful, In the eastern pare of the town all the small houses were fat; the French lodge, a large frame butiding, was razed to the ground, The barometer at this point was at 28 degrees 4 lines steady. At half-past five P. M. the mercury commenced to rise gradually but steadily, but the gale broke upon us froin the south with re- doubled fury. It seemed as though, exasperated that its prey was about to escape, it was deter- mined to do its worst in che short time left, The barometer continued to rise steadily until about seven P, M., when it reached 29 degrees 4 lines, aad there stopped. We could then feel that the force or the wind Was gone, though it continued to blow steadily and heavily half the night ‘Ths morning the destruction 18 fearful. The gale seems to have vented its fury upon the eastern part of the town, and the remainder ts comparatively ood. Many lives in the town have been lost by the ‘ailing houses, it 18 impossible at this hour (nine A. M., 22d) to state the number ot lives lost. In the harbor there was lite loss, there being but littie shipping, The Duke of Wellington arrived yes- terday morning in distress, having lost both anchors and gone ashore inside the harbor. It is supposed she will go to pieces, as she was leaking ten inches per hour on her arrival. ‘The crew abandoned her and got safely ashore on Water island, a sual island contiguous to St, Thomas. The Halifax steamer Delia escaped ali safe; she had steam up and two anchors down, ‘The American steamer Pioriaa cut away her masts and rode ivout. ‘The French steam- ers Ville de St. Nazaire and Souora are both aground, but 118 thought can be easily got om Tue royak mail steamers, two of which, the Mersey and ‘Tyne, were here, gotup fteam and came salely through. ‘rhe Danish schooner Grassnere, which was about going on the railway to copper, las been injurea in the top works, but &@ Week’ or two's work will set her ali right, It is not thougnt here that the force of the wind was sO great as in the hurricane of 1887, but its longer duration was the cause of so much destrac- aon. We have just sent some $3,600 to the sufferers by the fire in Guadeloupe, and now need all our re- sources. To show the force of the wind I would mention one instance. A plece of iron weighing some three hundred pounds was lifted over a large wail aad placed tna yard some distance off. At the hour of wriung a steady wind ts blowing the south, but no danger is anticipated, » S—The Ville de St. Nazatre, it 18 said, 18 nob aground, The Duke of Wellington 18 reported sunk. A telegram from St. Kitts yesterday morning stated:—Having bad weather, these communicauons slLopped, for what reason we do not know, This fr ; Morning Nhe Wires are all down, and we have no telegrapluc cominunicalion any where. The Lntest Details. Sr. Tnomas, August 23, 1871. I wrote yesterday of the hurricane, and the Hall- fax steamer not leaving tilt this morning gives me @ chance of adding a few lines, The bark Duke of Wellington has sunk in abont forty feet of water, near tne Eastern Polnt—ali hands: saved, The French steamer Caraveile arrived yes- terday evening from St. Johns, Porto Rico, with news that Porto Rico had the gale, but not so vio- lently. The telegraph wires all round the isiand are down, Fajardo, in the east of the isiand, it 13 sup- posed has suffered most, it being nearer the sup-~ posed centre, The packet arsived this morning from St. Croix. No hurricane there, only strong, | wind. No communication with St. Kitts. Tortata | a8 thought to be destroyed, a8 no boats have come down. The town being a Collection of small wooden houses, if the hurricane passed over it the whole niust have been swept away. The number of deaths here is between twenty and thirty. The number of wounded is notknown. The Colonial Council held a session yesterday, and ap- pointed a committee of renef, authorizing them to use [rom the public chest ap to $4,500, LAUNCH OF A UNITED STATES STEAMER AT BUFFALO. Something New in Her Propelling Power, {From the Buffaio Courter, Sept. 1.) Alarge number assembled at Mr. David Bell's shipyard yesterday morning to witness the launch of the iron revenue steamer Gallatin, and their pa- tien ce was rewarded with the sight of a saccessfu, launch. Although the time appointed was nine o'clock it Was not till eleven that the last block was knocked away, and the Gallatin gracefully and gently, but rapidly, slipped into the water. The christening was cone in the usual manner, Miss Mary Bell breaking a bottle of champagne over the vessel’s bow. One Incident occurred which caused a great deal of amusement the moment after the boat reached the .water, As she rolled over on her port beam she threw a large wave upon the wharf on the opposite sice of the creek, drenching some ferty men and boys thoroughly, and, although an amusing scene to tose on the near side, the bath was anything but agreeable to the unwary recipients. A moment later the Gallatin was on her keel, and the water again sull, This is the last of the six tron steamers | built at tats port the present year, all of whici have been a credit to the builders and enhanced Buttato’s reputation lor boat-biuiding, Among the speccutors. were Captain J. W. White, U. 8. N., Saperintenuent of Construction, and Lieutenant John Braun, U, 5. | N., Assistant Superintendent of Construction. The former gentieman has had his residence in Bumalo nea all the time Since the laying of the Kee! of the Gallatin. The Gallatin will have machinery simular to what 1s described velo’ ‘The-stern of the boat to which the machinery is now applied is cut away under- neath avout as much as lor the ord‘nary screw. The latter has @ screw nearly horizontal, the shaft of the Fowler wheel ts Lay heel in the stern, and the wheel works on & horizontal plane. This one bas three arms, each with tts adjustable blade, ixpert- ments were made with 19ur and two, but three were found to be Most economical. The wheel 13 44 feet in diameter. The extremity of each arm is inserted by a movable joint in the centre of @ thin, strong steel biade, standing perpendicular, The’ blades are 23 inches in dept, 12 inches at tae top and 10 at the bottom, and slightly rounded at the counters, ‘The blades stand with their sides towards the cen- tre soait. Above the arms there is an eccentric on the shaft, which 1s held fast as the wheel re- volves, Froin the ring or strap around the eccentric strong rods extend to the outer edges of the blades. Now, as the shaft revolves, the blades, as they pass around the circle, change their set, 80 to speak—that 4s, the eage of a blade to which the eccentric rod 1s attached moves from and toward the sham. Asa biade moves forward it acts upon the Water much as @ man’s hand does when he ls swimming. It may be said to hook or hol upon the water and pull the boat forward, As tue blade goes to the rear its angie upon the arm or radius t3 changed, and in passing around the rear of the shaft the blade drives the water to the rear, pushing tne boat forward. In the revolution there a WoO points at which the blade 1s paralicl with the kee! and exerts no power. We have deserived the boat as moving stralght- Ths eccentric is on deck, just like the if it be desired to REVENUE governed by a wheel ordinary steering-wheel. change the course of the vessel the ec- centric 18 shifted. ‘This shifts the set of the biades, and the line of force exerted is put at any desired angle with the keel. In an in- stanti, With a whirl of the wheel, the power is ex- ered at right angles with the keel, and the boat whirls round, Or, without @ word or signal to the engineer, this power is completely reversed, and the wheel ip ing straighc astern. In a few seconds the boat fs going astern. There 1s No reversing gear on the engine. ‘ihe power can be exerted in any direcuon—that is, at any angle With the Keel, with an easy turn of the wheel, which two flugers can govern. There is no rudder on tue boat. The steer- ing is done by shifuing the «irection of the power, ‘Tne Ericsson screw Works 1D @ plane vertical toand at right angles with the keel. The Fowier wheel works in a horizontal plane, ‘The latter can adjust the breadth apd depth of its blades, $0 as to exert the same power with half the draft. It can place tue blades below the ice, and, ime same time, Jarther from the bottom than the screw works. THE KNIFE AGAIN, At Yorkville Police Court, yesterday, before Jus- tice Couiter, James Conrad and his two sons, James and George, were charged with committing a felont- ous assault on James Sayers, It appeared in the evidence that on Saturday evening the prosecutor made some insulting propositions to a female rela- lve Of the prisoners, which so tocensed tie latter that they determined on revenge.
