ADVANCE IN FOREIGN EXCHANGER. The entire disappearance of all effort to render ash gold artificially scarce has turned the attention of the importers to tne foreign exchanges once more, and the demand for bills has led to a further advance In rates. varvicularly as the supply on com- mercial account is just now quite limited, The up- _ ward turn in rates was ulso founde! upon an an- | Ucipated demand for vills to remit against European coupons now expected by every steamer, and was aiso helped by the recurring scarcity of the larger denominations of gold cotn, as high as 5-32 premium being asked for double eagles over mixed and ordinary small coin, such a8 would be paid out by the Sub-Treasury on presentation of cer- tuflcates. The range of present quotations is shown in the following:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 109% @ 1104; good to prime bankers’, 1104 a 11035; short sight, 110% a 11v%; Antwerp, 5.2234 a 5.164; Switzerland, 5.20 a 5.15; Hamburg, 35% a 36 1-16; Amsterdain, 405; a 41; Frankfort, 40% a 41; Bremen, 8% @ 7934; Prussian thacers, 71 @ 71%. | MONEY TWO TO FOUR PER CENT, There was no essential chauge in the rates for money, but a slight Nuctuation was again percepti- ble between early and late cngagements. At the usual hour loans on stocks were made quite freely at three and occasionally at four per cent, with two to three per cent as the rates on government collat- erals, But toward three o’clock there was more disposition to pay four per cent, which is explained, perhaps, by the enormous dealings of the past few days in some of the clique specialues, which have compelied the operators in thexe stucks to enlarge their temporary requirements in the way of money in order to see their speculation to a con- clusion, The abundance of money in the city just now is amply suiicient, however, to meet every exigency so long as the coniidence of lenders re- mains unimpaired, It 1s only when distrust begins to be entertained as 10 the safety of lending money on stock collaterals that any contraction in accom modation may be looked for, Certainly, with a few such “breaks’’ as occurred to-day in the case of Consolidation Coal, which ratt.ed down ten per cent almost iu as many minutes, this confidence might Not easily continue. but fortunately Consolidation Coal is a rarity in collaterals, although just as dan+ gerous stuff may be unwiitingly accepted by lenders eve day. Prime mercantile paper is in good request, out scarce. Makers leave it with the brokers for dis- count al 43, a 544 per cent, and buyers readily offer to take it at 5 a 6 per cent, the result being an occa- sional transaction at the intervening rates, GOLD DULL—112% A 11234. ‘The gold market was dull and devoid of new fea- ture, exccpt, perhaps, in the better inquiry for cash gold, whicn hardened rates in the loan market, but otherwise produced no effect. There were but two fluctuations in the price of gold all day, and the changes upon these are shown in the table:— 10 A. M.. 112% 2 P.M 1125, 3P M, 1123 4 P.M. 112g 6:30 P.M... In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 3 Fer cent for carrying to 1-64 for borrowing. STOCKS DULL, HEAVY AND LOWER, With two exceptions—to which special reference ‘will be made presently—the stock market was dull and lower, with @ heavy tone, offering, in this respect, a striking contrast to the brilliant move- ment in Kock Island, one of the excepttons alluded to, The business of the day, such as it was, was diversified by two exciting incidents—a sudden fall of ten per cent im Consolidation Coal and an advance of five per cent in Rock Island. The coal stocks have for some months past been unusually prominent on the Stock Ex- change in cousequence of the manipulations of a clique organized to unite the iaterests of several rival Maryland companies and market the consoli- dated siock at high fgures—the long strike in the Feunsylvania regions affording a suMctent pretext for the alleged enhanced value thereof. “Con- solidation coal’? is already a consoildation of a number of small companies, but the process of absorption was to have been ex- tended. The pool having been organized tne price of consolidation was advanced to 64% as against 20 4 25 last January, but for a few weeks “sume- thing” has been going wrong. As usual in such cases some of the pool sold out upon the others, and the discovery of this treachery produced a “break” to-day from 51 to 40:4. Maryland Coal, which had been carried up to 41 dropped to 83, and tne only quotation for American Coal was 64 bid and 63 asked, This decline paralyzed the rest of the mar- ket and occasioned a volt even in Kock Island, which, siarling out at 126 fell off to 125%, the effect being operative on the general list and rendering it dull and heavy, even when, later in the day, Rock Island was skyrocketed up to 13044. This latter shurp rise is the direct result of a@ clique operation, and perhaps can be carried indefinitely higher, as the clique are said to control or have tied up all the stock requisite to secure them against any outside influence, At one time it was reported that the leader of the Erie party, who was reputed “short” of 10,000 shares, had settled at 130, Hereupon the price fell back to 128, but was again advanced to 180, and kept 80 for the remander of the day, that price being bid for the stock deliveranle in the usual way, while large amounts were being offered at seller, sixty, and at 126 seller, thirty days, The whole movement in this stock has been very finely managed, although doubts are freely ex- Pressed as te ita final success, for the reason that the outsiae public are not buying it, and the clique, in sqeezing the ‘‘shores,”’ are compelled to buy enormous quantities of “long” stock from the outsiders, who are quietly taking their profits rather than risk the chance of an eventful flasco on the part of the clique. In this way they are being gradually saddled with ail the stock in the market. For every hundred shares of short stock which they force the covering of they are compeliea to buy a thousand shares of long stock at what are evidently very high rates. As the public are not buying stocks just Dow, and as the clique have frightened the “bears” into doing nothing, the future of this ‘speculation iu Rock Island presents a curious prob- Jem as to what they will do with their joad, In Consolidation Coal when the public stopped buying the clique had to deal with @ach other. It wili be remembered that care nas ‘Deen taken in this column to omit all reference to the numerons rumors of a scrip dividend on Rock Island, which were so freely circulated for effect upon the market. Refusal has been given to the ‘publication of these reports for the reason that they are disproved by the tact that the constitution of Illinois, as ratified by the people last summer, for- | Round hoop Onto, shippiog brands, 8 bids the declaration of any further railway stock or | }owad hoop Obio, trade brands... 5° gerip dividends, and therefore limits the possibie bo a scrip dividend on Rock Isiand to so much as will we Increase its present to its authorized capital stock— ae Wwhich would be about 5% per cent. q oe HIGHEST AND LOWRST PRICES.
