BOARD OF HEALTH, Cutting Down Expenses—Arrival of Smallpex Cases per Europenn Steamships—Stringent Measures Kecomm At the regalar weekly meeting of the Board of Health of the Health Départment yesterday all the members were present, with the exception of Mayor Halland Mr. ff, Smith, The minutes of the last previous meeting having been read and some other routine business transacted, Mr. Manierre moved that in view of the fact that the Board of Ap- portionment have allowed but $31,500 for the year's expenses, the Finance Committee be instructed to examine and report as to what and how much ex- pense can -be reduced, In explanation he sald it was utterly impossible for the Board to go on as at present with the small sum allowed thom. The motion was carried. Mr. Manierre further moved that the committee also report as to whether or not the Board can dispense with tho steamer now in thelr employ. Considerable discussion was pro: voked by this resolution. Mr. Mullaly thought the Board should not be too pxecipitate in tne matter. He suggested that a committce should be sent to THE BOARD OF APPORTIONMENT and represent to them the condition in which the Board was placed, The other Commissioners did not agree with Mr, Mullaly, however. Mr. Manlerre next moved, after consultation with the City Sani- tary Inspec'or, that on and after this date foi 18) the use of the steamer be discontinued, and all tha hands now employed on her be discharged, This was unanimously carried, ~ A petition of cittzens living in the vicinity of East F. rty-#ixtn and Forty-seventh streets was received, praying that the Board take immediate action to compel Messrs, King and Ryan to deaist from dumping manure at the east foot of these streets, Referred to Sanitary Committers, The following reports of the Register of Records and the City Sanitary taapector naving been suo- mitted, the Board adjourned to meet again on Friday alternoon:— ‘tf to inform the Board t! “i during the past week, being an exc eek preceding. Stnallpox occasioned 25 deaths, an fncreass of 11. Of this uamber {9 occurred at the Smallpox Hospital. The increase is probably due in some measure to the recent influx into that hospital of cases from Quarantlae, ‘The mortality from measles diminished from 1010 Eigh- teen deaibs were ascribed to acariatina, the same number as in the previous wees. Four deaths were referred to typhus 2 to typhoid fever. Plthisis pulmonalts caused #6 deaths, an iacresse of 15, and local respiratory affections 75, an in crease of 3. Bright's disease was unusually tatal, having de- stroyed 90 ftvea, In the week ending Aprii 23 the deaths from smallpox in London rose to the highest weekly number recorded Within thirty-one years. A veciine took place in the ensuing week, during which 265 deaths wero registered, In each of the weeks mentioned there were 74 fatal cases in Liverpool, against 68 in the week ending April 15. Advices from Southampton up to May 1 inform us that bone mel 45 became epidemic in that olty during the four weeks prior to that date, $/ deaths having occurred in the week end- ing Aprii2.
