> FINANGIAL AND COMMERCIAL. WALL StRerr, SUNDAY, April 80, 1871, THE TRADE OF THE CITY uring the past week was active in nearly all de- partments outside of dry goods, in which latter there was the diminution of transactions usual at Bais season, THE WEEK IN WALL STREET. In financial circles, and particularly on the Stock (Exchange, the week has been signalized by the > largest business done for any corresponding period ince the spring of 1869. The course of the railways nd miscellaneous shares was, however, ex- tremely erratic, with frequent wide fluctuations and excited dealings, t seems that some of the cliques, Particularly those in the Northwest shares, became disorganized throuzh alleged internal treachery, nd a heavy decline in prices followed from tne Casting of their stock upon the market. The other cliques had been manipulating the market to get stock out of the hands of weak holders and to enlarge the short interest, and had rendered it quite sensitive to the movement first mentioned. ‘The latter dually sought to remedy the ill effects produced upon public sentiment by this demo- ralization, and prices were several times ral- Med, the market eventually closing very dull, If the ‘bull’ cliques, to use the expression of the street, Dave “lost their market” they have themselves to blame. But consideng the growing ease of the money market and the good margin of time yet left wherein to revive the “bullish” sentiment of the street it is not unilkely that they will succeed in re- storing buoyancy, and start the market on a further upward movement, The clements of a speculative rise are even more abundant than in 1869, in which year figures were attained which are ten to twenty- dive per cent higher than the best made in the pre- sent season. ‘The decline in stocks was not, at least, the result of any apprehension as to money which, even in the aldst of the crisis, was barely worth seven per cent and commanded tnat rate only for a few hours, At ‘the close the supply of funds seeking employment ‘was unusually large, and the figures on Saturday de- conde to four per cent as the rate on governments ‘and five as the rate on the usual stock collaterals, Prime commercial paper was in rather better re- ques. Foreign exchange was firmer on the demand for remittance against the large imports of the spring ‘months, and the leading drawers advanced their ask- Ang rates to 1103¢ for sixty day and 109% for sight sterling bills. Gold, which had been heavy in the face of a @peculative movement originating with a large number of operators, gradually advanced on the heavy exports of specie for the week, which were over $3,000,000, and in doing 80 was assisted by purchases on the part of some of'the stock houses Operating for a decline in the railways, ‘the ex- treme fluctuation under these influences was, how- ever, confined to the comparatively narrow margin of three-quarters per cent. The extreme fluctua- tions dally in the price of gold during the week ‘were as follows:— Hiugnest, —_— Lowest. 110% 10s 1 110% + 110% 11035 lig 105 prvery 110% 11g ut The strength of the gold market and the buoyancy of five-twenties in Europe rendered the government list firmer and led to an ad- ‘vance in prices. The easy condition of the money market also aided in establishing firmnesa, Tne highest prices were maintained to the close of street ‘Dusiness Saturvay, when quotations left off as fol- lows:—United States currency sixes, 115% @ 115%; Go. s1xe8, 1851, registered, 11634 2 11744; do. do, cou- pon, 1173 a 117%; do. five-twenues, registered, May and November, 11754 & 110%; do. do., 1862, Coupon, do., 143g a 114%; do. do., 1864, do. do., 1143¢ & 1144; do. do., 1865, do. do., M434 9-114%4; do. do., registered, January and July, 113 a 113%; do. do., 1865, coupon, do, 113 a 1. do. do,, 1867, do. do, 115%; do. do., 1868. do. do, 113 a 1134y; do, ten-forties, registered, 108% a 109; do. do., coupon, 109 3g a 169%. THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of ihe associated banks was more favorable than anticipated, and gave rise to some suspicions that the larger operators at the Stock Exchange had used their influence to render the exhibit as flattering as possibic. Most of its good features are, however, accounted forin great part by the legitimate movement of currency in this direction, and it is not at all diMcult to explain an increase of over a million and a balf doilars of specie, considering that, while the Treasury disbursed two millions ‘oy direct sale, 1t pald out about five millions m the way of May interest on the public debt. Itis true ‘that the gold sold by the government did not count » for its whole amount, comiug so late in the week, but the statement reflects in some degree the four mil- luons sold at the corresponding time of the previous week. Hence, waile the export of specie and the payments for customs have ocen heavy, they were not up to the disbursements of gold. The legal tenders having increased about $3,900,000, the total legal reserve is augmented by about $5,500,000, but the deposits having aiso increased about $5,000,000, the real gain in reserve and to be added to the surplus above the legal requirement is just $4,340,326. The total sur- plus now amounts to about $12,600,000, The state- ment contrasts with its predecessor as follows:— 60,426, 201 The following shows the changes In detail :— Increase in loans..... $2,336,742 Increase in specie. 1,636,311 Decrease in circulation. see 26,475 Increase in deposits. « 5,168,420 in legal tenders...... + 8,889,503 RAILWAY MATTERS, ‘The united railroads of New Jersey are about to pass under the control of the Pennsylvania Ratiroad Company, the committees appointed by the directors of the Pennsylvania company and the New Jersey companics having, itis understood, fuliy agreed to ‘he terms, after long pending negotiations. The ‘united cow panies comprise the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Company, the Camden and Am- boy Railroad Company, the Philadelphia and Tren- 4on Railroad Company, and the Delaware and Rari- (an Canal Company. By the terms of the lease the Pennsylvania company agrees to take the property and franchtses of the united companies, to assume all their obligations and to pay dividencts of ten per cent per annum upon their capital stock. These terms Will snortly be submitted to the stockholders ofthe New Jersey companies for approval. ithe Mnes leased w the umted companies, extending over nearly every county in tne southern part of the State, will also be under the control of the Pennsyl- vania company.
