THE COTTON MOVEMENT. ‘The total receipts of cotton for the week were 265,717 bales, against 152,321 bales last week, making @total since September 1, 1870, of 1,872,657 bales, against 1,110,950 bales during the same time last Year—an Increase of 261,607 bales, Tho exports from ali the ports for tac week were 117,598 bales, fgainst 60,737 bales last year, The total exports wince September 2 are 755,168 bales, against 655,846 Dales last year, THE BANK STATEMENT. Contrary to general expectation the bank state- ment proved very favorable, the net or surplus re~ serve having been augmented over @ million dollars by the banking movement of the week, ‘The loss of legal tenders attributed to the withdrawal of money for speculative purposes has been more than over- come by a gain in specie. ‘The statement contrasts With its predecessor a aay Sat Dec. In the forenoon some borrowers of second class standing paid one-elghih per cent for the use of money on call, with pledge of inferior collaterals, The brokers asa general thing paid 1-16 to 1-32in addition to the legal rate of interest in transactions early in the Gay. Before three o’ciock there was a sudden relaxation to seven per cent currency, and loans were made late iu the day as low as 4.0.6 per cent, Commercial paper is hardly quotable as yet, the reliefin money having arrived too late co revive dealings. Foreign exchange was dull on the basis of 10934 for prime bankers’ sixty-day sterling, and 110 for eight, These rates were the outside quotations, GOLD DULL—110}4 4 110%. ‘The gold market was neglected for the more ex- citing scenes of the Stock Exchange and was dull at the quotation 11034 a 110%.
