10 a EW Pa Saas mn Fair Daughters meaainia ae Israel in the Field of Charity, Grand Opening of the Baraar Last Night Splendid Display—Valuable Prises—A Gal. axy of Beauty—Inangural Adderes vy Governor Hoffman. ‘More briltiant, more beautiful than any etmiler exnibition that has this year preceded it, the Bevrew Charity Fair in aid of Mount Sinai Hospital ‘and Hebrew Orphan Asylum was formally opened Jast night, undereircomstanees that augur well for ts Saal substantial success. The Armory of the Twenty-secdnd regiment waa the @ene of the great gpectacic, than which @ more gladdening, brignt, animated or cheerful one it would be dificult to tmagine. In petnt of ‘variety, decorations, costly and useful prizes or general attractiveness, the display was truly suyerb, and elicited net only the eulogies but the sterling appreciation of the thou- sands of happy-looking visitors who thronged the building. Wealth, beauty and fashion were there, ‘The prettiest toflets and the prettiest faces, with the prettiest smiles, were to be seen in ali directions, ‘whether under the “BEAUTIFUL FLORAL TEMPLE, which they adorned like 80 many rosebuds, at the Uttle post-office, at Rebecoa’s Well, or at the sixty tables which were laden with rich and handsome gifts, and for which passers by were engaginiv so- ficited to take a chance, The appearance of the room on entering 1s almost bewilaering not jess by its gorgeousness than by the wonderful panorama which is presented. The floral temple, whieh 1s most artistically construcied with vines, 1s attended by as many as thirty-six young ladies, who did a flourishing business Jast nigotin the bouquet Une. Rebecca’s Well deserves honorable mention, and mhny a delicate little tumbler of lemonade from the fountain cooled and refreshed thousands of Shirsty and ADMIRING PROMENADERS. ‘Then there was the Orphan's Well, and the ducklest Uttle lady eight years old personated the old woman who lived in @ shoe, surrounded by an innumerable collection of dolls and other articles, She heid quite @ successful levee among the youthful portion of the assemblage. An attractive feature was the lottery, in which a thousand dollar bond 1s the principal prize, But it would be useless to attempt to aescribe ae ENDLESS VARIGTY of valuable gifts which everywhere meet the eye. Pianos, jewelry, palntings, and, in fact, everything thac conld adorn the mansion of the wealthy, inter- est the bibliomania, Charm the artist, enchant the musician, delight the dear babies and make mankind happy, can be seen at the Hebrew Charity Far, for which a great financial triumph way safely be predicted. There is a littic temple at the head of the room to which many flocked Jast eventing In the intertor is a very fine sketch by Franz Breitkopf, representing the reception of the tablet containing THE LRN COMMANDMENTS by Moses on Mount Sinat, with Aaron at the foot showing it t the people, who exclaim, “As God commandeth so shall we do.” On one side is picture of the Mount Sinai Hospital, and on tl Other a representation of- the Orphaus’ Home. Two books are Open and the names Of tie Subserivers are on rpetuated. Itimay be here mentioned that he fair has been aplendidly organized aud the labor of charity has been aijotied in such & mauner that the work will proceed harmoniousiy. ‘Ihere are twepty-one committees, their chairmen being the following named gentlemen:—Deco rations, Emanuel 8B. It should not be forgotten that the art gallery contains some magnifl- ye paintings, loaned for the occasion, aud at- yacted quite & coucourse.of visitors. Shortly after sight o'clock iast evening the sight resented from the Laiconies was something to be mempered. The way and brijliant throng momentarily increased and gradu- ally filled the bmidmg to _ overflowing, nd the pleasurable excitement _ineldent thereto, the dipnsands of glittering prizes crowding the tables, the hum of buyers and sellers, the pleas- ant and wondering feeling depicted on every face and the music sweiling forth 1n cae utful strains, sontributed to render the inaugural ight of the fair quite memorable tn ie way. Anniversary Dinner of the St. Andrew’s Society. ‘The Toasts, Speeches, Dishes, Repartess and all the Fun of the Occasion. ‘The “canny Scots” of the St, Andrew's Society, of New York, worthiy celebrated last evening, by a dinner at Delmonico’s, the anniversary of their patron gaint, The usual business meeting was held im the afternoon, and most of the old officers of the society were re-elected for the coming year. In the evening the guests gradually assembled, and at geven o'clock, headed by Piper Clellend, who was attired in Highlapd costume, the company marched into the banqueting hall. Grace was said by Chap- lain Meleed, and for a couple of hours the assem- bled Caledonians abandoned themselves to the indulgence of that social merriment which Burns has so felicitously lauded. The dinner was one of Velmonico’s noblest efforts, Its grand feature was the timely appearance of the national “haggis.” Preceded by the piper, who loudly sounded forth we musical strains of the bagpipe, a dozen waiters, each carrying in nis arma A SMOKING PLATTER of Scotia's et delicacy, solemnly paraded be- tween the tables, ‘The gi under the influence of the occasion, slowly lapsed from the sober decorum which so pre- eminently distinguishes the children of the thistle into the harmless hcense of social merriment, and uobent their minds to the graceful courte- sies of the festive board. At last, with the appearance of dessert, the Chairman rose and proposed the first regular toast, “THE DAY, AN’ A’ WHA HONOR If.’ In his introductory remarks he alluded to the charitable eperations of the society, and suggested a large increase of its life members, At present tne yesied funds of the institution amountea to only tweniy-six thousand dollars, which he thought ought to be largely increased, The toast was drank with impressive enthusiasm, and was followed by a seng from Mr. Leggat. ‘The second toast, “THE LAND WE LBPT BEHIND US,” ‘was DeXt proposed. Mr. IRVING, in reply, said he was very much de- lighted at the warmth that had been displayed at the mention cf dear old Scotland by the President. There were some teasts and some sentiments that needed no comment or illustrations, Like house- hold words no sooner had they reached the ear than they touched the beart. Such was this toast of the Lana o’ Cakes, long resident in a distant—he would rot say foreign land— he still felt the same old attachment to dear old Caledonia, though perhaps not s0 strongly as the old days of mus ear.y youth He rejoiced as much as any pe = was ye omins Ln: im- riance and honor of the oltish people hat a eountry en ik ore’ salen weil be proud. The Chairman tren proposed the next wast, “THE LAND WE LIVE IN,” which, he said, had always afforded an hospitable home toScotchmen. It was received with tumultuous applause, which was wated by the band sud- dently striking up, by a strange effort, ‘God Save the Queen.” Mr, Lombard, as soon as rebellious musicians were patepond, sang the “Star Spangied Banner,” most of the guestsjoining earnestly in the cnorus, Mr. Jobnston, the ex-president of the society, then responded to tne toast. He said it was hardly necessary to say more than that for more than a century the Land of Cakes had been followed by the toast of the ‘Land of Buckwheat Cakes.” They all ved here, making money or los- ing it, in quiet and peace. He had been struck by the universal feeling aneng young Scotchmen to come out here, make money and gohome. They made agg married a Yankee girl, generally—ne meant no disparagement to Scotch nh lasses, but the Yankee 8 were on the ground—and did not go home.
