Bonded Warehouse Buainessclne Removal from Jersey City nod Foboken=A Monster Petition of Now York Importers to Have It Retaraea. The petition below ts signed by the members of one hundred importing houses of the city of New York. Mr. A. I. Stewart and others whose names do not appear upon the paper are deeply interested inthe change askeu for. Mr. Stewart’s views on the subject are in writing before the Trea- sury Department. Besides, he saw President Grant when the latter was last in this city and- urged upon him the necessity of using his influence to prevent rings, either in ‘New York or Washington, from interfering with the great commercia! interests of this city. It is estl mated that with Mr, Stewart, who, ag stated, 1s ac- tively with the petitioners, the paper below repre- sents eighty per cent of tue importing interests of this city. Tt 1g boldly asserted that the general order and bonded warehouse business was removed from Jer- sey City and Hoboken a8 & job for carting contract ors and bonded warehouse political paupers and robbers... The ides was conceived by the “Customs Carting Bureau” ring, which Secretary Boutwell on the 25th ef May last ordered abolisned, but which order has not been fully executed to this day. The same carling contractors are doing the business, at $50,000 a year more than others offered to dogit for. The chief, Carting Burean operators were quietly changed from that establishment to be keep- ers of a bonded warehouse. One of thése men, by the name of Stocking, was “general agent” of the bureau. Another is Colonel George K. Leet, trans- torred from the staff of General Grant, where he wad adjutant, to the War Office, This is the recurd of the Army Register. These two men are said to have several private parincrs, some of whom hold high po- sitions in Washington. When the general order busl- ness was first taken away from New Jersey a new bonded warehouse was created on this side for a nephew of the ihen Collector. That nephew sold ont his interest to one Mason. Within a few weeks Mhaon has defanited largely, some'say to the extent of $200,000, and has escaped. The warehousing business of New Jersey has since been giyen to Stocking & Leet, who are understood to be still cop- nected with the coutraciors of the ship and public store carting. My. Boutwell has tor a ong while heen jn favor of restoring the warehouse business to the New Jersey side; but Mr. Grinnell deciined'to com- ply wita Mr. Eoutwell’s sugrestiony Ths was one of the causes of Mr. Grinneli’s removal. Mar, Col- lector Murphy has also been urged to carry Out Seg. leware nee, At first he was inclined bus. mut late he has iarmated that the Sec- Gevamnae sous tararoant the ware ot gi and r with recent requests of the Secretary to return the business to New sersey. It 13 understood that the Collector is controlled at Washington. To the end that an issue may be made on the subject ihe im- porters of this city have taken the action here re- corded, The petition was presenied to Collector Marphy on herrea He was requested to give an early be ty He said he would do s0, in writing, soon.
